  • We are on the home stretch of first crop silage! Today Owen and Mason both stay ahead of the chopper with the rake. I continue to build the pile as straight as possible. While Dad keeps filling wagons fast with the chopper. Just another great day of farming! Thank you all for watching!

After reading the responses of my question of silo vs. Pile. I understand. The safety and liability of silos. Abs the insurance cost. It makes cents. Sense. Thank you!

Don't forget the taxes on a permanent upright silo! It's considered a building in my county. 🙄

I love it!!! First it was Darby and now It's Ma..... The packing ladies. Everybody gets involved, everybody. That's how it works on the family , FAMILY farm!!

I hope Darby didn't give up because of getting stuck, Grown Men do that!!Owen, when I was a very young kid, my dad and Grandpa farmed together, we had horses and an old cornbinder, the cornbinder kept breaking down, and my Dad talked to Grandpa many times about getting another cornbinder but to no avail, so Grandpa was down unloading the corn, and the cornbinder broke down, so my Dad looks around and no Grandpa, he was on a slight slope, so, Dad unhitches the horses and the cornbinder went down the hill into a big stone pile and crashed and that is where it sat and rotted away, and we had another cornbinder!

That did look like quite a hill to me. Glad that things worked well. I would bet you were all pretty tired that night. Still think your dad is like the energizer bunny and everyone else is always moving too. Good Going. Take Care and May God Bless you all.

I'm just curious what your Dad did before you boys were old enough to help. Did he work with other family members, or was it just him and your Mom ?

The packing crew just keeps a going!!! Might seem like a boring job, but probably one of the most important in the process. You definitely need the front-assist tractors for moving loads safely up the hills. All the hands have kept it all moving.

You labeled this video the 2024 hay season. But I assume that there will be a second and maybe a third cutting of alfalfa yet this summer. Will that be baled into small square bales or will you chop it also?

Using the wagons to help pack the pile is a good idea! The psi is greater on the smaller tires, even with tandems. Most people have to max out the weight on the pushing/ packing tractor to do the same thing.👍

I think they used it to cut the hay, and didn't want the extra tire matting down the swath.

You have to talk your dad in to bags . Lot easier and far better quality feed . Usually someone has a unit you can rent.
Guys are usually good about working together so you can get it when you need it

I sure liked having this first cut series. It's a good reminder that farming/haying doesn't happen in one romantic day. It's always good to see that tarp go on at the end.

Absolutely great pile . You guys are lucky we where in a drought for three years up here in northern Minnesota now it rains almost every day no first crop has been cut yet and any one that tried has gotten wet and rutted up the head lands
