  • This video shows the construction of a 21-strand mohair cinch. Tying your own cinch is a good way to make some of your own gear. It's a simple skill that most people can learn, and you don't need a big shop or a lot of tools to do it. In the end, you'll also get a quality cinch that should last for a long time. Have you ever considered using a netting shuttle?

No I haven't, but it's a good idea. Thanks for bringing it up.

Do you think it is possible to use paracord or other synthetic materials?

Hey Jacob, you certainly could do the weaving with paracord. However, I think you would run into comfort problems with the horse. I'm not sure how much paracord would chaff the horse, but I'm guessing it wouldn't be as comfortable as mohair, or even cotton.

What type of mohair thread is that? I think it would be really good to be able to do this.

Regular 8-ply mohair for the body and 2 ply for the interweave. If you learn how to weave them, you can have really good chinches.

How many hours does it take you to make one?

That one took about 6 hours. Of course, that includes time spent messing with the camera and taking care of other little odds and ends throughout the day. Probably 4-5 hours if I sat down and just worked.
