  • Welcome. In this video, we tell the story of Ishmael, Abraham's bastard son
To understand Ishmael, we need to go back to his origins, starting with his father, Abraham, a revered figure in various religious traditions. Abraham and his wife, Sarah, eager for a son, waited years until God promised them a numerous offspring. Sarah, however, despairing of the delay, suggested to Abraham that he have a son with her servant, Hagar. Thus Ishmael was born, becoming Abraham's firstborn.

Ishmael was Abraham's firstborn, born of Hagar, his Egyptian Handmaid, according to the biblical narrative. Abraham, now advanced in age and Sarah barren, received from God the promise of a numerous offspring. Following the custom of the time, Sarah offered Hagar to Abraham to beget an heir. Thus, Ishmael came into the world, beginning his story in the Bible. In this video, we will explore who Ishmael was according to Scripture. Ishmael was born when Abraham was 86 years old, and according to the biblical texts, Abraham loved Ishmael deeply, even asking God to consider him as his promised heir. However, at the age of 99, God renewed his promise to Abraham, promising him a son through Sarah. All the men in the house were circumcised as a sign of the divine covenant, including Ishmael at the age of 13, the age at which some Arab tribes traditionally practice circumcision.
However, challenges began when Sarah finally gave birth to the promised son, Isaac, leading to family tensions and conflict between Hagar and Sarah.
A year after Isaac's birth, Sarah felt threatened by the presence of Ishmael and Hagar. In the custom of the time, a fertile maidservant could not challenge the barren wife, and Sarah demanded that Abraham expel them, which was contrary to the customs of the time. Despite Abraham's displeasure, God assured him that he would take care of Ishmael and promised him a great offspring.
Ishmael and Hagar went to live in the desert of Beersheba and later in Paran, where Ishmael became a skilled hunter. He had twelve sons and one daughter, and his descendants were identified in Scripture as Ishmaelites, many of whom became influential tribes in the region.
Although there were initial conflicts between Ishmael and Isaac in childhood, the Bible records no further disagreements after adulthood. Ishmael was later mentioned in the Bible as a significant figure among the Ishmaelites, contributing to the history of God's people.
In conclusion, the story of Ishmael in the Bible highlights his importance as part of Abraham's lineage, even though he was not the son of divine promise. His role and the destiny of his offspring reveal the work of God in the history of redemption, contrasting with the story of Isaac, the son of promise. These accounts not only illustrate God's faithfulness to his promises, but also highlight how different destinies can intertwine in the narrative of salvation.
