My favourite story about Margaret Hamilton was actually told by her son in the Shudder doc series, Cursed Movies. He said that after the accident that practically burned her alive, she had to be bandaged from head to toe and was put in bed rest so that she could heal. Her son was still very young when this happened and she didn't want to traumatize him, so she told him that the bandages were a costume for a new film she was doing where she was playing a mummy.
Fun fact: Margaret revised her role as the wicked witch on a lost episode of Sesame Street in the 1970s that became lost media due to it scaring children. It was recently found a year ago.
This year we learned Billie Burke, Glinda, spent her last years with an honest to goodness girlfriend. Romantically. Not a roommate. Romantic. We were able to squash a "they were roommates". Billie Burke would tell Margaret Hamilton to hide in her dressing room and left it unlocked and also told her to help herself to candy. I'm not sure how that ever worked given the paint being toxic, but I remember the detail of that story pretty well. Billie Burke had a dressing room despite her part having so little screen time because she had a long acting career and had a famous husband who had died. Come out, come out, wherever you are is self referential, huh? I find Glinda, WWotW, and Dorothy to be my sort of queer trinity for myself but I know others look to the mannerisms of the Scarecrow, Tinman, and Cowardly Lion for themselves. Either way... I mean the theme is Somewhere Over the Rainbow, it's a pretty gay movie with every flavor of queer. Pick a character. You're good.
My favorite line from Beetlejuice is, "Oh don't mind her. She's still upset because somebody dropped a house on her sister." I say it whenever my sisters are mad.
I absolutely loved her in the Addams family t.v. show. I was 7 and I was stunned and happy she was in a comedy. I was transfixed as a kid. RIP Margaret Hamilton
I saw the episode of Mr Rogers that featured Margaret Hamilton. I was a anxious little kid and seeing her out of makeup helped my fear a lot. She was so kind in that show. It meant a lot
I honestly not surprised at her treatment. If you know one thing about the making of wizard of oz you'd know the production was not just a clown show, but an entire circus.
Here I am sitting here 50 years old crying over Margaret Hamilton and Mister Roger's conversation that did so much for me as a child. Thank you so much for shining a warm light in her!
Hamilton popping up on Rogers and Sesame Street to show kids the difference between reality and fantasy is peak awesome. Truly an amazing woman. As a straight guy who did tech theatre in college during the mid 00's, Wicked is a show whose music I burnt out on fast. (Sorry, musical theatre kids would not stop singing that soundtrack... and Avenue Q). I had zero interest in the film... until Cynthia Erivo was cast as Elphaba. Bad Times at the ElRoyale showed me she had an incredible voice! She slayed, and considering most of the good material is in the latter half I can not wait for Part 2.

Margaret Hamilton playing so many "spinster" roles and then absolutely killing it as the wicked witch, a character that takes that trope to the extreme and makes it terrifying, is so cool. And so much more empowering than some of the modern "hag" movies we have today (not talking about "the substance"; that was excellent). It reminds me of how I felt watching Megan Fox play Jennifer Check. I know that sounds crazy but hear me out. Megan Fox's early roles were all about being the bombshell. And then with Jennifer's Body, she takes that trope and subverts it by making it horrific, as this succubus like character. I loved this video and it was so cool to learn so much about Margaret Hamilton. She truly was an amazing lady.

As someone who regularly paints themself green in drag (it's an alien thing because the Sims 2 permanently broke my brain as a kid, don't ask), it's been really fun to see how everyone is executing their Elphaba looks. Green skin kinda breaks makeup color theory because any of the pinks, yellows, browns or oranges you'd normally use don't work the same, so people have to kinda re-invent their makeup from the ground up (some more successfully than others) to make it look like it's someone with green skin rather than someone with green facepaint. I really like your use of blue because I can't seem to use blue tones without making myself look like a corpse.

11:18 I don't think I've seen anyone else in the role pull off these prosthetics like she does. They complement her naturally aquiline nose so well, and I love looking at her whenever shes on screen. The perfect example of a character that was molded around the actor.

Stunt people don't get nearly as much recognition and praise as they should. They're risking their lives, sometimes doing INSANELY dangerous things, for our entertainment.
as you were describing how the witch loves being evil i was reminded of Agatha all along and how Agatha is evil and really embodies a lot of the same things the wicked witch of the west does, she is camp and unapologetically evil (most of the time) and she was a gay icon when she was in Wandavision and then truly became a gay icon with her own show (she is highly insinuated to be a lesbian but she’s at least bisexual)
She had twelve minutes of screen time in Wizard of Oz. Twelve minutes. It's not only seven minutes that count as heaven! PS: F those trees. I'm glad that I'm not the only one they freaked out.

You are a very good storyteller, make that a world class amazing storyteller. I look forward to your future content. I researched Margaret Hamilton years ago and was in awe at what a kind person she was.
If you folks haven't, I HIGHLY recommend Aljean Harmetz's book on the making of The Wizard of Oz, it's a fascinating read (for example: Terry, the dog actor playing Toto, was one of the highest-paid talents on set!) Margaret Hamilton was a key source of information for this book, as well, you gotta love her.
She looks like she could be David Howard Thornton’s grandma and has the temperament for it. I love her but I needed to know more why I love her, thank you for this babe!
Hi Queen! Thank you for the video and all the details you added to Hamilton's story. You look great as usual. I've been watching your videos for a while, and I'm happy that your channel is becoming more popular, that you have better video and audio equipment and sponsors. The historical research you've been adding has been fascinating, just as the social and political commentary has been fun and relevant (as always). And it's also been great that you've been choosing to talk about lesser known topics/personalities related to popular topics, instead of talking about the popular ones like everybody else does around here. I'm looking forward to your videos next year. Happy Holidays!
Honestly, I'm speaking as someone who loves the 1939 film, but Margaret Hamilton's Wicked Witch walked so other villains could run. The Grand High Witch and Judge Doom immediately come to mind. Especially the latter, both due to taking "I'm Melting" verbatim and due to how many queer folks I've met who just get the campiness of Christopher Lloyd's delivery.
Haha, I was one of those talking trees in a production a few years ago. In the stage show, we not only taunted the Scarecrow but did a three part harmony behind the Tin Man when he did his number. There was a lot of swaying to suggest that we were sexy trees. The funniest part of the whole thing is that I'm 5'3. Not exactly treelike. 😂 But yeah, the topic at hand...Margaret Hamilton rocks. I remember Judy Garland saying something about how kind Margaret Hamilton was to her, and how, for all the less than stellar memories associated with making that film, she really appreciated the people who made her feel welcome and safe, and Maggie was one of the few who did.
I had not known about Margaret Hamilton's devotion to childhood education, so learning that she appeared on both Mr. Roger's Neighborhood AND Sesame Street (saw the other comment about the lost media and hunted it down) on the nascent PBS makes a lot of sense. We need lots more unrepentant queens in public education!
my first lesbian crush was margaret hamilton's wicked witch, so my loathing of wicked has nothing to do w being "straight". anyway, this video makes me so happy considering my adoration for LFB's works & ms. hamilton.
Fantastic video. I don't have anything fun or quippy to say! Just... great job. I've been in a Mister Rodgers rabbit hole lately watching gen Z discover him and cry their little eyes out, so it tickled me that he also made a quick appearance. You did Maggie proud, great video!!
Your makeup, hair, outfit, everything is gorgeeeous! Every time I see a video of yours I wish I had had more time to experiment with makeup in my life. Though it would've taken me a lottt of practice to get to your level! (I simply don't have the health or resources for it at this point in life) But your looks are definitely inspiring.
I was always obsessed with the Wicked Witch of the West. Always. I wanted to be her pretty much my whole life so I relate to John Waters on that. My favorite stories are how she was like the only one nice to Judy Garland and ended up eating a few times in Glinda's dressing room. I also like how she didn't want to scare her son after she got hurt and like I think told him it was for a movie or something. She just seemed genuinely sweet. Also she played Morticia's mother on the original Addams Family tv show in the 60s and was so good.
My great grandma was a 30 ish year old mother of 3 who ran off to Berlin and paris in the 30s and became a flapper. In her words: a gin swilling dance crazed socialite. She said the 30s were awesome despite the depression because I quote "I was rich". She taught me the Charleston and a bunch of ballroom dances and introduced me to the EDM of her day.... also Gin 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I live for this wicked witch look. Do you explain how you do your makeup at all? Cuz 8 Dollar's a month seems like a steal for the content I need to be start being parasocially drag adopted.
I've never watched the original wizard of oz, but I think I absolutely have to now. Didn't know anything about Margaret Hamilton and what an absolute boss bitch she was. What an inspiration. Also your make up is on point as always and personally I think the black hair suits you perfectly well!
Judy Garland at 16 right away got along with Margaret Hamilton ❤Margaret H. was a kindergarten teacher before she became an actor. She must have been so sweet and sensitive toward Judy. 😢ironic isn't it? I couldn't believe it when i first found that. They should make a movie of the making of the movie. Not a documentary, a real movie.
Also I love the anecdote from Angelica Huston regarding working on the Addam's Family movies that Grandmama was perpetually high and that one night she was really tempted to spark up with her after a really rough day on set. Imagine getting high with Morticia?
y'know what weird movie thing gave ME nightmares as a kid? the goddamn Fireys from Labyrinth. i HATED it when they would like take their heads off and the fact that they weren't green screened very well made them look even more freaky. but i stand by that one: they are freaks
i've always been bad with actress/actor's names, so even though the wicked witch has been my icon since childhood, i never knew her actress' name!! funny to think a woman with my deadname plays one of my favourite characters of all time!
No mention of her Sesame Street episode? I feel like that helped with the generational trauma cuz kids seeing old women and think they're actually a Wicked Witch in disguise was very likely caused by that episode. Thought lost for decades because of this, it was recently discovered well-preserved in an online archive. It was just sitting there, til some redditor leaked it.
The story was that Louis B Mayer sent a note to her when she was convalescing at home, demanding that she return to work immediatly because she was holding up the production. She replied with something like, "Miss Hamilton will return to the set as soon as she has sufficiently recovered from the accident to be able to complete her performance.". Pretty shrewd. She stood on the respect that was due her as a Hollywood actress, reminding Mayer that the situation was his fault, not hers, and that if they didn't want to reshoot half the movie, they would just have to wait for her. It worked.
The OZ movie that gave me nightmares was Return to Oz, it had a desert that if you touched it you would turn to sand in a horrifying way and a woman that had a collection of heads that she would change out with her own head. Like a next level wig reveal. Also to age myself I think I saw it on laser disk.
Dorothy gets shock therapy and that is also very upsetting because no one believes her that she went to Oz. They want her to be "normal" again. I'm just saying the movie (and book) are incredibly timely and good to take a look at. Yeah it's Disney but Disney was very faithful to the source material and honestly it's scary. It shows a terrifying side of Oz that makes you remember how much you were afraid of WWotW. The Wheelers got me. I still have nightmares of them. They're not even that scary once you're an adult but as a child, the way they move? Something is really scary about that.
I don't have a lot of memories from when I was 5, but one vivid one is me crying in the bathroom during this movie at my first sleepover because the witch scared me so bad. Ah memories! That was like 1984, probably right before she died (not that I would have known that.)
Frankly Maggie’s kindergarten training probably made her Witch performance better. She knew how to play a bad guy, and scare kids. She emoted big she knew how to do scary voices, it was brilliant. Also I got to say that if Maggie was around in today’s Hollywood she may have been a sex symbol, she reminds me a lot of Anna Kendrick.
Off topic: you could totally do a tifa cosplay sans the black hair. I’m playing rebirth for the first time and younger tifa has almost chestnut brown hair so if you’re not comfortable with the color you have on now, you could do some dark brown or even do a blue undertone black. I think you’d kill it!
it isn't easy being green, but smiffy's FX aqua (applied with one of those sponges that looks like a butt plug), and gaimas fixing powder make it easier ;)
There’s something about the fact that I have crossdressed more times than John Waters that makes me feel weird, like… it doesn’t feel right for me to hold a record over him.
I think the isolation was intentional because those that were running The Wizard of OZ wanted the cast to think she was evil. If you don't get to socialize with the cast, they won't see you as human, as it were. And also the 1930s were just.....a wild time.

What an icon. I'll forever have a lot of respect for her work as an actor.
20:53 Can confirm, your wig and outfit are fabulous ♥️
i've always been bad with actress/actor's names, so even though the wicked witch has been my icon since childhood, i never knew her actress' name!! funny to think a woman with my deadname plays one of my favourite characters of all time!
@ oh god. Forgot about the wheelers. Also now remembering how messed up the shock therapy was. I am going to need to rewatch it.
Just in time for Halloween!
On that note: Happy Winter Solstice QCF, and any and all practicing Wiccans! :)
Merry Yule! And a late Happy Saturnalia! 🪐
My mother made sure I knew how good Margaret was, so I was never afraid of the Wicked Witch of the West 💚
Great video as usual! Would love to hear your take on "Some like it hot" in-depth at some point.
I remember being scared shitless as a child watching this movie. By the Tin Man. Not the witch.
What that says about me I have no clue.
I don't have a lot of memories from when I was 5, but one vivid one is me crying in the bathroom during this movie at my first sleepover because the witch scared me so bad. Ah memories! That was like 1984, probably right before she died (not that I would have known that.)
once again, your nose is everything. love everything going on here.
you defo pulled the look off well, I love the story of Margaret and her take on the wicked witch! the queen of oz, and the queen of good witches!
UGH IM A MARGARET HAMILTON STAN. I printed a pic of her to have as a poster in my room
Also I played the wicked witch of the west and work in a Sunday school so we’re basically the same person.
it isn't easy being green, but smiffy's FX aqua (applied with one of those sponges that looks like a butt plug), and gaimas fixing powder make it easier ;)
You look FANTASTIC! 100/10
Omg. They really didn't care about their actors wellbeing at all in that movie, true villainous behaviour.
There’s something about the fact that I have crossdressed more times than John Waters that makes me feel weird, like… it doesn’t feel right for me to hold a record over him.
It's been a good year for fanfiction
Here's something i didn't know i wanted
I think the isolation was intentional because those that were running The Wizard of OZ wanted the cast to think she was evil. If you don't get to socialize with the cast, they won't see you as human, as it were. And also the 1930s were just.....a wild time.
I am SO stealing the word "gusped".
loving the mint make up
loved the Sharon needles shade.
To paraphrase the legendary Bruce Lee…have the courage to be disliked, or painted green or…scare children.
You can also see her play the character again in the Paul lynd Halloween special
She was the BEST witch! Loved her in Another Language
