    hi all! I've received a lot of comments informing me that it was, in fact, NOT Marsha P Johnson who threw the first brick at Pride, but Storm Delarverie, a black lesbian. I take full accountability that this was a wrong statement on my part, and I really do thank you all for dutifully correcting me. I still have a lot of queer history left to learn, and I should have been more thorough in my research regarding such an important moment in our history, rather than relying on my own memory (which is riddled with ADHD--not an excuse, obviously). thank you for educating me and I apologize if I spread any misinformation. carry on

    • @marblegray

      This isn't necessarily true- no one knows who threw the first brick. Marsha has claimed and unclaimed it a few times, as have many other folks. Some people say bricks weren't even thrown in the first place. It was a whole section of my queer history class last semester. You didn't do anything wrong!

      (This has been your moment of mid-edgy humor as a misguided form of parasocial simping. I do not in fact think that you are my friend that I can tease. I hope this comes off as the kind of compliment it was meant as. And I hope that eyelash comes off because aaaaaaargh!)

      If I remember right, it was Storm Delarverie who threw the first punch. It’s not 100% clear who threw the first brick. I think it’s good enough to point out some of the most prominent leaders of queer liberation, who were present at Stone Wall and who carried on the fight afterwards.

      I hope you're safe enough that you don't have to change yourself for society's sake. These terrorists have no business winning and making life awful for people. Life is awful enough on a good day. If it's safe enough I hope you can live your transness loudly and proudly. These little...curse words...shouldn't be given an inch of the ground us LGBTQ+ folks have won.

      It's scary. We need to keep pushing back against it, and never stop being vigilant against bigotry, because it grows when people take our hard-earned things for granted and start thinking that it can't get worse again. Just look at how misogyny came back with a vengeance after the 2000's when everyone insisted that we didn't need feminism anymore and that sexism was a problem that had been solved.

    Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is problematic because it pretty much only effected the people who had served. I’ve talked to a lot of people who served, and having gay and bi people that everyone knew was gay and bi was well known.
    What Don’t Ask Don’t Tell did wasn’t necessarily make it so gay people can’t serve, but made it so you could have gay people serve and have them stripped of their honors and ruin their life. That’s what Don’t Ask Don’t Tell mostly did, you’d have vets come home from war, then go on a date in public with a man, and then have all of their honors removed and dishonorably discharged (which also hurts employment opportunities).
    Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was very insidious. It wasn’t about think gay people weren’t good enough to serve, rather they thought we were good enough to serve but knew everyone else didn’t think that so they didn’t want people to know and would ruin your life if you expressed your sexuality
    It wasn’t about LGBTQ* people getting the right to serve, but about the right to not have their sacrifices invalidated and struggling to find a job due a dishonorable discharge merely because they were gay.

      Reminder that the story of Marsha P Johnson throwing the first brick is merely a symptom of us as a community pushing to acknowledge trans people and people of color’s contributions to our history and legacy, but if we are going to honor them we should acknowledge the inherent messiness of that history, like we may never really know who “threw the first brick” but we can acknowledge Marsha P Johnson by fighting for trans people and BIPOC people today

      Sex work shouldn't be part of a gay culture. It's a symptom of disowned and disenfranchised by family and community and forced to go into these roles for survival. As a former survivalist, the community abandoned me and others I watched friends die for nothing.... But yeah .... Community. Yeah we shouldn't mention it in a good light. Considering trans s workers would be killed and no justice to found.

    As someone who served in the military under DADT and post DADT and as a POC I can say how important that was for me. I joined the military because I refused to take out student loans and I needed a way out of an Ohio far away that I could find myself. I grew up poor so just getting in a car and moving wasn’t an option for me. For me the military gave me the option for both. It was already hard enough being black in the military due to it being a good ole boys club and very evident racisms amongst other things. Throw in coming to terms with being gay and not having to talk about……. I know RPDR gets a bad rep, but it was truly my saving grace. It was the only thing I had during DADT that showed me real people that looked like me on tv. I could watch it from my apartment and nobody would know. I could get exposed to a culture that I couldn’t be apart of because I would have to worry about losing my job and being forced to go back to a place that wasn’t the best for my mental health.
    I feel that people over look the intersectionality of being POC and Queer and how we don’t have the same options as white queer. I also feel that just glazing over the fact that DADT was repelled completely diminished those who sacrificed their lives defending a law that didn’t protect them.

    It's really cool to me that drag has extended itself to now having cis women participating. It's like everyone can now put on the makeup, the wig, the beautiful dress and just have a good old time. I'm sure this isn't looked at as anything particularly interesting to you young folk, but I'll be 40 in a few days so I've seen some shit. So much has changed since I was a young gay person. I know it's scary right now, but you guys have so much more room to be yourselves and I hope you take advantage of that regardless of what the right wing lunatics say. Life is too short to hide and be miserable. You've got an entire family working on your behalf to make life easier and better; grab every opportunity we can give you and run a million miles with them. There are people out there who love you, you just haven't met them yet. Shit. Sorry. My dad instincts have been running rampant and I can't help but dad everyone. Okay, I'll stop...

      I think we can help queer youth best, personally, by making it easier for queer kids to escape their abusive blood parents. We need to weaken parental "rights" and recognize youth rights to choose their caregivers. When I think of the effort spent begging straight parents to stop abusing their queer kids...and look around today to see how little it has paid off?
      Time to stop placating the straights. Damn right we're coming to destroy the family.

I think that the things described as "cringe" in this video are probably more indicative of a generation looking back and judging everyone for being so completely fooled. For buying in. For making such a fuss about human rights and then turning back around to pat Lin Manuel Miranda on his special little ass for making a musical that was not NEARLY as progressive as everyone thought it was, or whatever.

I already listened to it on repeat since then and the other day I was on my couch crying listening with a can of beer. My GOD that album is powerful. Also to get back to the video, this was super interesting to think about queeriness going mainstream and still there a def view of making us suitable for capitalism. I think we hit a point now with last year with Target and now when I was at the march this past month, there has been more a shift back to niche icons, charities, and moments only the community would really understand. Overall, your channel is dope.

    the gay wage gap also could be explained that kids are expenisve. but also take more time. unless you have children from a previous relationship. parenthood is really only feasable for richer same sex couples. adoption is expensive, IVF and sperm bank is expensive. a surrogate? rightfully very expensive. it's normal that if you have kids, especially women, to work a little less hours. or stop for a few years if your income is less than daycare. which would mean more time in your career.
    besides wealthier individuals having more mental space to question their identity and less of a risk to lose everything.

    We reclaimed the word "queer" in the 90s, but YOU'RE DOING GREAT SWEETIE.

    • @alexreid1173
      @alexreid1173 5 месяцев назад +14

      It wasn’t reclaimed at the same time in all places. Where I grew up, queer was primarily used in a derogatory way and was largely not considered reclaimed. This was circa 2017 in semi-rural Ohio. We knew it was reclaimed by some people online, but it wasn’t for us for a long time

    • @ursaminorjim
      @ursaminorjim 5 месяцев назад +6

      @@alexreid1173 This was pre-online, though. I'm thinking mainly in terms of the political movements in the wake of the AIDS crisis years, like Queer Nation (which developed out of and alongside ACT-UP) in 1990. That was a ground zero moment for both the reclamation of the word and the tenor of the political advocacy of the time, and it carried through the decade as visibility grew and political goals were being taken seriously.
      Granted, language is an ever evolving set of symbols and systems and signifiers and what-have-yous, and what's common parlance in more insider circles doesn't automatically translate to everyday conversation. Dissemination, even in the internet age, can take some time.
      Some people -- of varying ages, I might add -- still find queer to be nothing *_but_* a slur, and its usage reprehensible. And you can't argue someone's feelings. But I think it's a wonderful, all-encompassing umbrella term for a wide range of folk. I certainly would never force anyone use a term they dislike, but I'll also be damned if anyone insists I stop using it because it makes _them_ uncomfortable. It's a deeply entrenched part of my identity, forged in my history, and a battle won right. So, it felt a little belittling to be told the the word "queer" was reclaimed decades after the facts of my own existence.
      But I may have misread her intention, focusing on the "reclaiming" part of the sentence instead of the "we" (the act vs the era). That is, to say that the word itself hadn't already been reclaimed, but that it hadn't been reclaimed by people _her_ age until that time. If that's the case, my sincerest apologies, no harm no foul, and all that good stuff!

      I remember being a kid in semi rural Canada. It was definitely a sl*r when I was a kid, people even used gay as an insult then too. That was after 2000. Years after I graduated (precovid) I was uncomfortable even hearing queer after how it was used when I was younger. I'm happy we've been able to reclaim the term as our own.

    • @alexreid1173
      @alexreid1173 4 месяца назад

      @@ursaminorjim I’m not sure exactly what she meant to imply tbh. But yeah reclaiming is something that takes awhile.
      A lot of movements and culture changes start in urban areas, so rural areas tend to be the last to catch on. That’s changing a bit with better internet access, but many rural areas still had crappy internet even 10 years ago. “Gay” was a much more popular umbrella term where I grew up, but it was still only considered okay in certain contexts. I still identify better with “gay” than “queer” even though I’m bi.
      I’m 100% okay with people using the term queer for themselves. My main issue, especially after moving to an urban area, was just how often I’m called queer or lumped in with the “queer community” despite never identifying with that word. I’ve been getting more used to it over the past few years, but I do wish people would be more mindful about it. I don’t think some people realize that not everyone and every place considers it 100% reclaimed and inoffensive.

    The CEO's role is very indirect. Hard to spot. Its the store managers and regional managers who promote these things but make the company too much money for the CEOs to care. The CEOs can be like "well I'M not racist... its this one manager. I didn't know it was happening at all." then fire that manager if the media backlash forces them to. But they don't really care. They put systems in place that allow managers/region managers to hide their malpractice. That's how POC CEOs that are contributing to current issues. There’s been another study that showed that married straight men were more likely to be given raises and promotions compared to their single gay counterparts, especially in the time immediately following their marriage or birth of their children. Though this was inverse for most straight women who rarely get that same bump

    cant wait till the trans wage gap is talked about, most of us trans folx take like a10-20 percent cut on our income by coming in as out transitioned gender. some places hire trans folx at such a low payrate because we are thought of not as an average employee but a risk for reward.
    having a trans worker is good in most hiring eyes for diversity but most companies consider us a "liability risk" because mistreatment of us could end in a lawsuit
    they reduce our pay because they assume we are going to sue them for mistreatment, which just ends up with us being on a razor's edge because of how quickly Walmart is ready to bury their trans workers without even a warning.
    annoying, I'm glad I work at a dispensary. only place I've worked that hasn't actually said or done something incredibly offensive
