Another thought- if you let knitting for olive know about the issue with your yarn shipment there could be 2 positive outcomes for them. One, they could pack their yarn in a way to protect it more causing them less headaches in the future, and two, the packages may be insured so the shipper will pay for the new shipment and you will be happier with your outcome, hence sharing your experience with us all on your popular podcast. Now, we’re all a little leery about ordering, a less good outcome for them…. Give them a chance to make it right.
Ohh that is a good perspective I hadn’t thought of! In my mind, reaching out would make it seem like I was blaming them for something out of their control, but you are very right about this! I have ordered from them tons of times and this was my first time it came in like this, so I will definitely be ordering again despite this time’s experience. Thank you for sharing this!
I Don't Feel Discouraged Or Dissuaded From Ordering Knitting For Olive? 🤷🏽♀️
Knitters Will Withstand Anything, We're Forgiving & Patient. 😂
Once A Yarn Company Shipped My Yarn In A Bag, FedEx Dropped A Small Taped Up Bag Off At My Door, It Was Less Than Half The Yarn I Ordered. Specialty Limited Edition Yarn. The Yarn Company Made It Right, Shipped It From 4000 Miles Away For Free And FedEx Lost Nothing... I Still Shop With The Company, But I Don't Use FedEx When I Can Help It.
I’ve had a similar situation with the yarn package from KFO. They packed it way too tight in the bag and it basically burst on the side by the time I received it. Half a skein was hanging out of it, and it was a terrible feeling receiving it in that way. They def need to work on their parcel packaging.
Oh your swan sweater came out so nice - love it!
Ahh thank you so much! I love it 🤗 🦢
I just cast on the Stornoway and I’m completely in love. Mine looks like gingerbread colour with cream icing stripes lol
I’m so in love with your swan sweater oh my goodness!. If you were able to share the chart I’d love to make one for my daughter and I!
Also love the Christy dawn sweater. So clever! It’ll be so beautiful x
Sounds beautiful
I’m obsessed with the swan sweater 🤩🤩🤩
Eee me too! Thank you!! 🤗🦢
Oh my goodness, I was so excited to see Rachel's swan sweater!
Eee thank you!! 😊 🦢
Your swan sweater is so beautiful ❤️ you're both so inspiring!
I love your swan sweater. So pretty!
I always pick up an extra stitch in the corners when I pick up stitches for the gusset. Marly Bird talked about that in one of her sock knitting tutorials and after doing that and seeing the difference I now do it every time.
Omg that swan sweater!!!!😍
I think the swan sweater is gorgeous. You should be proud!
Your swans are amazing Rachel! 🎉
Thank you so much!! 😊 🦢
Also wanted to say y’all’s channel has really inspired me to branch out in my knitting and I’m knitting my first sweater AND colorwork project! It’s the autumn alpine sweater by Caitlin hunter and it’s actually looking really good!
Ahh that is such a beautiful pattern!! Congrats on starting it! 🤗🤍
rachel i love your swan sweater! it turned out so charming :)
Wow your swan sweater is so beautiful!!! I’m so inspired that you both are creating your own sweaters very cool! Also I love that you both give your honest opinions about patterns and yarn experiences. It’s so helpful and I appreciate the honesty!
Wow your swan sweater looks amazing !!! Love what you both are wearing ❤
Ahh thank you so much!! 🤗🦢
Symbolically the swans represents you both .
Love this! 🦢🤍
You both knit beautiful garments and have so much talent. I look forward to watching your podcast. Your swans turned out beautiful. I know that had to take some time but it was worth it.
Thank you so much for watching and your kind words!! 😊💛🦢
I love how your recreated sweater looks like it has little flies all over 😱 so cute! 🧶💖
Love that. I thought little bees, but you’re right, they are fly colours ❤
Hi, I’m curious about how the Berocco vintage dk wears. Does it pill? That is the cutest sweater and colours! Awesome work 🤩
😱 the swans look beautiful! You did it!!!!
Thank you so much!! 🤗💛🦢
I have been using Knit Companion which I can use on my iPad and iPhone. Great to keep track of where you are.
Beautiful work as always!
I am so impressed with your swan sweater, Rachel. And I can’t wait to see your color work sweater finished, Jessica. It’s wonderful how you were able to duplicate the look from your inspiration sweaters.
Your swan sweater is so beautiful. Better than the store one!
Thank you so much! It was such a fun project! 🤗🦢
I was hesitant to cast on the Stornoway sweater but after you explained that you had the same concerns that I had I now have the confidence to begin. I had the yarn and everything !! Thank you! I LOVE your swan sweater ! You were determined to get it done and I admire that. You both are so talented. I look forward to your podcast ❤ keep em coming!
I'm always shooting my mouth off and saying "I could make that", but never doing so. I am so inspired and amazed that you two have actually done it! Working on a toe up sock to see if my opinion of them has changed - not hating it yet.
This is a beautiful case. 😮❤ Just gorgeous! I hadn’t knitted in over 30 years so I still had my needles from whatever I had that my mom or Oma gave me. So this last year I spent waaay too much money on needles. Goodness! But I do use them and it does take time to figure out what kind of needles you like for what. 🤷🏻♀️
Thank you so much for mentioning the Lotus Lake Socks! 🥰
I startest knitting 3 years ago, sock knitting last summer and finally finished a pair of lace socks. This pattern made it so easy and beautiful. Made it in 3 days. 🎉
I use the knit companion app. It helps me keep track of where I am in a pattern. It’s free to use.
I adore the swan sweater!! If you created a chart would you consider sharing it? Also, those tan lace socks are gorgeous!!
I am so excited you got gifted that mohair to try your opinions always help me so much & I love to see y’all compensated for your hard work!!
Heads up that the Knotty Goat in Columbia, MO is carrying KFO in the shop now. :)
Ohh this is wonderful to know!!
@ It’s been a treat to have easy access to it! :)
always so pleasant to listen to your gentle voices and presentations of impeccable knitting... ^^. also, so very kind to not return the damaged yarns... (still, maybe they would want to know in order to perhaps double/triple package yarns in the winter months...xxx000). and the sewing - Adorable flowered sun dress.... who would guess - a bed sheet - reminiscent of the film, Sound of Music, where the children's clothes were made from the curtains ^^ and the white skirt - Perfect with the sweet swans!
if you save you pattern in books on your phone you can then write on it (in lots of different colours) then you can highlight where you are. i enjoy your channel, thanks for sharing x
I agree with the more colour choice and gauge with KFO yarn 🧶 beautiful knits ❤❤
Your swan sweater turned out beautifully! I find duplicate stitch tricky, I would need to get the technique down before attempting a finished project! I also really like the sweater that Jessica is attempting to re create! All your knitting and sewing is beautiful, I really like the Henrietta skirt, but don’t think you could put pockets on it, I am gonna go check out the pattern, if it does have pockets, I will be tempted! Good luck for your team today, I hope you both have your socks on!😊
I use screenshots for following patterns too and it’s really easy to mark your place with the Markup feature- I just circle the section I stopped at and erase it later so I remember where I was (this is on iPhone, but I assume other brands have a similar feature). Also, obsessed with how the swan sweater turned out!!
Hello! I’m always glad to see an episode from you both. Your taste and skills are so inspiring.
I’m knitting the Freestyle Shirt by Susan Muller I’m KFO cotton merino. I’m using terracotta rose and dove gray held together to marl it. Since I live in California, it’s too late to knit anymore warm wooly sweaters! 😢
The freestyle shirt is such a beautiful design!! 💛
Ahh the swan sweater!!!!!
Love your podcast, I’m always excited when I see a new post. All of your makes are beautiful! The swan sweater is more beautiful than your inspiration one, I think the scale of your swans is more elegant. About needles and notions, I have several different sets of interchangeable needles, wooden ones , short points and my beloved Chia set. I do use all of them for different things. I think wooden needles are good for cables because they are more grippy. I also wanted to say, I love that you use paper clips for stitch markers. I have an over abundance of stitch markers and progress markers, because they are so pretty. But your minimalist practical approach is inspiring.
If you put your pattern in knit companion, (I just have the free one). You can keep it on your phone and the moveable line will help you keep track without having to scroll through your photos. This works if you’ve purchases your patterns through ravelry, I don’t know how to add patterns otherwise. This might be a good tool for you to use. Charts work here as well. Let me know if you try it out!😊
Yes! I LOVE the Knit Companion App! The highlighter and row counting features are so helpful :)
I printed the pattern for Stornoway sweater. I am struggling with getting the correct number of stitches for arm pickup.. hopefully get to sleeves soon. taking a bit of a break now that I have the body done.
That Dress Is Super Gorgeous... 😍
Woo hoo perfect timing 😊
The swan jumper is so whimsy and darling 🦢 I would love to make something similar. I recently just learnt how to knit and made my first scarf. I’ve found so much inspiration from your videos. So excited for the day I can make beautiful garments like yours. Oh quick question which knitting needles do you both use? Sending love from England 💕 Xx
I would love to see a strictly socks episode. You have both made so many cute ones and I’m wanting to try some and not sure where to begin. Do you have a favourite pattern maker for fit and easy directions?
Last October we did a Socktober episode that showcases some of our favorite socks!! Summer Lee Design Co has some really good beginner friendly patterns and her book, the Sock Project, is a great place to start for knitting socks too 🤗
I had issues with Knitting for Olive as well. The shipment took a long time. At first I assumed it was just shipping or the popularity of the kit. . However, I have also ordered directly from Onling - after and during the same time KfO. I have ordered 3x from Onling and every single time the order came on time and in great shape. KFO it was late.
With the yarn all you had to do was hand wash it as you would for your garments while in the ball or use a chair to unravel it so it can open up then use it
I use "Beilaufgarn" with wool only socks in the heel and in the toe box. This makes them so much more durable. Sty I do not know the English word for beilaufgarn. Basically it is a thin durable yarn held together with the sock wool.
Both of your projects are sooooo beautiful! Jessica, does your alpaca seaway stretch much?
The NEEDLE HOLDER is a beautiful work of art from Thread and Maple that are workers from Ukraine, and a Ukrainian Company! So great to support these lovely people who have been displaced. ♥️ 🇺🇦
Yay for finishing the swan sweater! It looks amazing!! I also love the color on Jess’s sweater, that cold dark brown is beautiful!
I also love seeing your Stornoway’s! Blocking makes such a difference!
I am always surprised when things get messed up in the mail and the mailing company doesn’t include a note of it!
I noticed you are both knitting socks with dpns and not any other method. I have not tried it yet - do you recommend it? Do you get problems with ladders?
And it seems Rachel is using four needles and Jess three? How come? Is one way preferrable?
We almost exclusively use DPNs for socks! It’s the way we learned and still our preferred method! ☺️ Jess is using three needles because her pattern has cables, so this way she has an extra needle to work the cables, but typically we prefer to keep socks across four needles when possible! We don’t usually have ladder issues except when the purl stitches are on the right side, but that tends to be pretty rare. 🤍
@ Thanks! Inwill definitely buy some dpns to try! I have tried three other methods but I don’t reslly like any of them as far… should I consider wooden ones (nice for plane knits!), or do they break easily when they are so thin?
I think the term you were searching for is fixed circular needles 😊
Regarding merino/heavy merino: I would also much rather have leftover merino than heavy merino, as it is much easier to use in different projects
We hadn’t thought about that, but that is such a good point! There are a lot more scrappy projects for fingering weight yarn than worsted. 💛
Fixed needles!
Ahhh that’s exactly what we meant!! Thank you!!
Having seen both the Eleanora Dress and the Daisy, do you think they’re different enough to purchase both patterns?
You both talked a lot in this video about pre-blocking items, which is something I would really like to start doing! This would make a huge difference in my satisfaction I think, as I often end up with sleeves or hems that are too long or too short after blocking the finished object. Even though I am wet blocking my swatches, sometimes the pattern length isn't exactly what I would have wanted.
Do you typically leave the knit on the needles when you do this? And are you doing a full wet block, or more of a steam or light wet block? So curious how this works for others, and if you have any tips!
Do you use dpns when doing the lace part of socks? Does the count on the needles change or anything? I like using dpns but haven't knitted any lace design on socks.
I've seen that happen with other customers who has bought from overseas. That's customs fault, sadly. I wish we had answers to why or how it gets wet but that shouldn't be happening to our packages.
Is there a chart for the swan design?
An Instagram friend shared a chart with me! It is from @alainamakesthings! 💛🦢
I have a better solution for keeping the pattern on your phone. I upload all my pattern pdfs into iBooks on my phone and it keeps the progress of where you are in the pattern everytime you open the pdf in the app. And you can mark up the pdf as you go if you want also. I love to use this for charted patterns to keep track. Currently working on an Esther jacket and it’s making keeping track of pattern repeats so much easier ❤
❤
There is often insurance on packages and kfo may get the money back and can reimburse you without loss to them
lol I was trying to send you a mental message when you were discussing your needles -- *FIXED* is the word you were looking for 🙂
Oh my goodness, thank you!! Our brains were not coming up with this word for whatever reason! 😅
Why don't you use a knit companion? It's so much easier than screenshots and printed patterns. It keeps your place, so there is no guessing. All you have to do is touch the screen. The characteristics are in every pattern, no matter how many projects you have.
🥰 beautiful makes!
