- My latest Ebay find. Sawe this on Epay and wanted it pretty bad, so I put out some cash for this one and got it. I like to play with things I haven't seen before. What I saw on the Ebap auction was 9 little soldiers peeking up at me. I figured one was the keying tube and I was right. The other 8 are 6gk6 tubes which are 6bq5's with different pinouts. Yep, 8 6gk6's / '6bq5s' all in parallel. I was kinda hoping they would be push pull, but that's ok, still an interesting box. I don't know if this mystery box is home made or not, but it is well made. Good engineering, except no bleeders. However, since the HV is turned on thru the keying relay, I think the designer may have did that on purpose. If it used bleeders, the HV caps would be discharging when unkeyed and hence would pull high current to charge every time you keyed. That ain't good. However, on the other side of the coin, with no bleeders, those caps will hold a charge a very long time. Nothing is pulling the down. A long time ago, I got zapped by a video game monitor that had been unplugged for months. They don't have bleed either and ZAP. However, thankfully, it made me do the funky monkey dance, but I was OK. I guess the question on this one is to bleed or not to bleed.
This amp has HV going to the screen and is grid driven aka Turbocharged. However, the HV is only running at 550V which is pretty low for a tube amp. I think the builder was going for clean power vs max power. Most amp builders do just the opposite. Run the HV way up, get max power out, but sacrifice clean output and longevity. With the lower voltage on the plate, and 8 little soldiers only putting out 60 watts deadkey and 160 swing, this amp runs clean and should last a long time. I only had to replace the electrolytic caps on this one. Everything else worked. Pretty clean for a fifty-year-old girl too. I like swinging, clean, good running amps, so of course, I like this one a lot. - Наука
Hey mikey, he likes it! Diggin this little ball pin hammer. 33 great lakes, walking on through.
LOL
Back in the late 70's Someone gave me a linear that looked homemade. Had the coil wound around a prescription bottle etc. Had 4 6GK6 tubes in it. I never heard of the 6GK6 tube at that time. Looked like one of them Elkin type cases. No matter what i did or tried, I could never get it to swing forward. It swung backwards pretty good tho Lol. I traded it off for a Sansui 250 model tube stereo reciever. Lifting off the cover on the Sansui i discovered that it ran a pair of 6GK6 tubes for each channel. Watching this video brought back some memmories.
You mean something like this: ruclips.net/video/vNcjdYSxJPo/видео.html
Yep. That looks like the one i mentioned. Did about the same wattage on my friends Bird meter but, We tried driving it with low key swing up radio, He changed components in it etc and never was able to get it to swing forward just kept going backward. Was pretty loud on mod tho but. Got annoying with everybody telling me that i was loud as hell but swinging backwards. Thanks.@@tramdr
I have one all most like it, Hell of a modulator / driver
Make a vid of that bad boy, please.
What's Up Doc, Eight Mini Baldy's Swingin A Deuce Fity Is Scandalous! I Need To Find One Of Them Goodfellas. Real Nice!
Interesting new toy.
One thing I don’t like is unused or extra transformer leads just cut off and left physically hanging in the chassis. At minimum cap it with a wire-nut or heat shrink…..or even (gag) electrical tape.
Agreed, but I'm not about to play with those 50 year old wires.
Really cool lil amp
Agreed and Thanks.
I knew a gentleman in the 70s that made amps look like that but no cover and used the tye capped tubes
His best known statement " want an amp ,bring beer 6 makes 150 12 makes 500 case Makes 900+ and sleepy tech!!!!! Ha ha LETS GO!!!!!
It looks like a Gordon Lemmons built box to me
I've heard that name before but that's about it for what I know.
Never saw one of these before nice looking build. 1000 watts from a 300a. Nope it’s just dirty harmonics the meter is picking up. If you could get that many watts the tube would be cooked. It’s just dirty watts playing with the meter
Agreed, but people see it on the wattmeter so its gotta be true, right?
Good evening. From Mr Uniden 613 Northern Arizona
Thanks.
It’s an interesting amp. I don’t like the design very much. But it works.
I do like it, runs cool and clean. Most modulators run the opposite, hot and dirty.
LOVE THIS CHANNEL!
Thanks.
I saw this too. Interesting
sure has an Elkin feel to it ..
I agree, but that's just my best guess.
@@tramdr give Rays electronics in Elkin NC a call (just Google the number) I betcha if it's an Elkin they can identify it....
I have a Fisher stereo amp with those tubes EL34's
Good tubes.
The voltages at the tubes. Tells me its designed to have large swing
Agreed.
I'll guess with the power supply, no bleeder resistors, then you mentioned it 😂.
Someone spent time laying out that amp and it is a clean build. Enjoy your new toy.
Yep, no bleeders and I agree. Thanks.
I looks like a version of an Elenco that I have never seen before built into a standard BUD Chassis like they used to sell at Allied Radio in Chicago.
I have a 4 tube version that is in perfect condition but I do not have the perforated cover for it...
If you triple the tubes maximum plate dissipation in watts, that is the maximum peak power you should be able to get out of it without hurting it.
(and that is assuming you are not exceeding the peak plate current rating, it is not being overdriven, and is properly tuned into a non-reactive load)...
I have seen people get as much as 6 times the rated plate dissipation out of a tube but they don't last very long that way.
I think that tube is rated at a plate dissipation of 12 or 13 watts.
12 X 3 = 36 watts per tube
36 X 8 = 288 watts expected peak power
.
Have a good day!,

a 6lf6 palomar 300 will do 800-900w peak. those LF6 tubes are beasts
Sure, maybe doing Dozy watts though.
Cute
Thanks, good to hear from you.
I saw that on eBay the other day lol
I'm glad you didn't bid it up higher.
It could use a fan, perhaps some sticky tape and a computer fan on top just to move air?
It runs very cool, so no fan needed.
@@tramdr
Cool 😎
No bleeder resistors on the high voltage . Right Doc ?
Yes Sir, or 'Attaboy'
Elkin , Lone Ranger , scout?
Good guesses. Me don't no.
looks like a elkin
Agreed
Nice
Thanks
Nice 😊
Thanks 😊
☺️😀
the power lines look like its too close to the chassis. it could arch .. scarry !
Modulator....design
Agreed.
Now 1,000 watts for 300a is exadurating a little if say 800 if u drive the balls off it
Agreed, but not only some of the people here, you should see the people on Facebook and their output claims. 250-350 per tube out of a 6lq6 or 6lf6. I just SMH.
Hey tram dr... Did those diodes get hot look at the rectifier...diodes look like they have been hot ..might be camera angle
Never really checked the diodes for heat. They shouldn't. This amp probably pulls .250ma's or so.
Hey brother you interested in a ten tec titian with 2 x 3cx800 its popping 1 fuse if 2. Im hoping to God it is just a high voltage cap....Gatekeeper
Only if the price is very good. That could be a bad transformer or tube. Those Tubes are unobtainium.
@@tramdr sorry I worded that wrong I meant would you be interested in repair.
Sorry, No.
That is some AWFUL solder joints there in the power supply. DID YOU DO THAT? The RF section looks pretty good..........
I did the electrolytic caps.
6jr6.. same shit .. different socket clocking....
Youre the bastard that outbid me? 😂
So that makes you the one who bidded up the price. Darn You.
@@tramdrI'm probably one of the people who bid it up there were a few... I thought they were 6bq5 tubes too. Those put out a solid 10w or so in tube rigs each .. x 8... 80w RMS .. I'm surprised you're seeing 250+ peak out of that box... So cool, I'm kind of jealous!!
What does it look like on a scope? Clean???
Doc, What about modifying the LR-1 to this design, if the plate transformer can handle the four additional tubes the "Long Ranger" would be worth keeping....
Too much work and money for what, 75 more watts?
@tramdr .. I’d like to send you a jb12 to go through
whats the matter with it? Also sendd pics to my email tramdr at yahoo.com
