  • I'm finally cracking on with the first practical exercise for the BHI Distance Learning Course, making a set of hand levers. This is good filing practice and a great first test of my skills.

    I'm still learning the hardness of various metals. I'm not sure how you were able to successfully file tool steel without first heating and cooling it to soften it. Metals are mysterious.

      Tool steel is a high carbon steel if you heat it to a red it will get harder to the point where it can not be filled with a standard file. 😉

    More polishing! File marks are the enemy of good grades in the practicals! That said, better than my first effort ;-)

      I shall up my game! I'm going to take a bit more time with the next exercise. Hopefully, I'll get better results.
