The Ditto Trick (Catch Any Pokémon without a GameShark)

- THE LINK TO THE HEX CHART HAS BEEN FIXED!!! READ BELOW!!!
The "Ditto Trick" (sometimes called the "Extended Mew Trick") allows you to capture any of the 151 Pokémon in the first generation GameBoy games without using a cheating device. You are also able to capture most, but not all, of the glitch Pokémon like Missingno. and LM4. If it is unclear in the video, the stat that affects which Pokémon you encounter is the "Special" stat (the one that was split into Special Attack and Special Defense in the later games). I recommend using Calcium to alter the Special stat value of your Pokémon.

To all that doesn't understand how this works:
1. by flying away, the game retains the code "start battle uppon entering route X"
2. you don't have to defeat the trainer, you can just lose the battle to abuse the system.
3. if you don't battle a trainer, the game might not code properly enough for the pokemon you want to appear.
4. the game retains code from every last battle, so by doing this (battle a trainer, face a pokemon with the same HEX), you are telling the game, the next time you went to that route X you started it all to "start a battle, spawn the last pokemon i battle".
For example, special stat of 112 will spawn a wedlle, because that ditto turned into a pokemon with that stat, the code that remained is "last pokemon spawn in wild was weedle" and not a ditto or the pokemon it transformed into. Weird right? xD
So when you go back to that route X, the game wants to start a battle with no trainer or patch of grass (because you flew away before starting anything in the first place), so the game will spawn you the last code it retained once you enter that route.
Therefore, start battle with wild pokemon, last hex was 112, spawn weedle lvl 7.
The lvl 7 is encoded into the HEX so, if you want a lvl 1 pokemon, just use growl 6 times (i think) before fainting the transformed Ditto.
Hope this clear a lot of confusion on how this system works.
Could you tell me what Pokemon I need to get Eevee for this glitch?
「イウテルピ」Euterpe it’s in the description
@@euterpe_exe the pokemon you will get is based on the SPECIAL static of the last pokemon you have fought.
To Eevee corresponds the number 102
www.supercheats.com/gameboy/questions/pokemonred/294260/what-is-the-ditto-mew-glitch.htm
So the tactic is this: you get a pokemon with a 102 in SPECIAL and you look for a DITTO maybe on the route 15 or in the grass before the Indigo Plateau since you have a 30%chance to find him. Ditto will transform in your pokemon, copying his special. The rest is explained in the video, you just comeback where you started this ritual and you'll get to fight the eevee and eventually catch him.
Just to add onto this, the reason why youd want a level 1 pokemon is in these games you were never intended on getting a level 1 pokemon. The lowest level is level 2. The game glitches out when you get a small amount of exp (less than the amount needed to level up to level 2, so maybe battle a level 2 pidgey or something and switch out mid battle.) When you get that exp it doesnt really know what to do, and I think it underflows to 100? I could be wrong about the underflow part, but it definitely goes to level 100
But what code is it for gengar? 94?
Damn where was this trick when I was 8 years old getting frustrated over not having Bulbasaur, Charmander AND Squirtle all on my team 😑
I know what you mean
Someone didn’t have Pokémon yellow lol
if you use growl on the ditto 6 times before killing it or running away the Pokemon you find will be level one abd as long as it gets less experience than it needs to go to level 2 it will jump straight to 100... each time growl is used it reduces the level by 1 each time and thanks to this you're allowed to do the level 1 to 100 glitch
Dont get it
+Ronny Mendez Instead of fainting the Pokemon or running away if it's wild, for the ditto glitch, have a Pokemon in your team use the move growl 6 times (the growl removes 1 level for each use) so instead of finding a level 7 Pokemon after fighting the ditto you find a level 1 Pokemon. There is a glitch within the game for level 1 Pokemon because they shouldn't exist that is if it gets less experience than it needs to go to level 2 (example 32 out of 47 XP) it jumps straight to level 100. This level 100 Pokemon always follows your orders no matter how many badges you have. You can do this glitch repeatedly to.
then u wont learn alot of moves....
Jesse White - So use growl 5 times and bring it down to level 2. Then you can train it up all the way.
I thought growl only affected the attack stat. That's pretty cool.
If you’re trying to get a Pokemon with a special stat lower than 6, look for a special stat of 257-262. The system wraps around the number 256, so a special stat of 300 would produce the same results as a special stat of 44.
*proceeds to use this glitch to catch a ditto*
Oh my... XD
The irony!
Man, all I can think of while watching this video is how much the games have changed since the originals. I haven't played the GB games since 1998-2001, so seeing them in action again all these years later...they were certainly technological achievements back in the day. How impressive.
& 11 years later.....
if you want to do this over and over again, then just repeatedly lose to the trainer you fight before ditto
and remember to heal at the fuchsia city pokecenter before losing
Hey guys, I thought it might be helpful to note that rattata has a special stat of 21 (for those who want mew) at level 20 make sure to cancel the evolution or the stats will not be the same hope this helped and I can also confirm this works on vc(2016)
+Gabe Aldridge thanks man, this was a big help!
I'm still having trouble finding a ditto
does it also work with yellow edition
Could you tell me what special stat I need to get Eevee? Do I need a pokemon with a special stat of its pokedex number?
@@euterpe_exe Eevee you need special of 102
you can reuse the trainers that start the glitch (like the Gambler) since you never actually fight them. You can run out of regular trainers (the ones you need to fight before encountering a wild ditto).
You can just lose to those fighters to not run out of them

Absolutely amazing video, taught me how to get safari zone pokemon without doing the terrible safari zone, and awnsered questions I've had a long time, thank you very much, you've just earned a like and subscribe!
I remember that you can't do it on trainers that you can already see, as the game calculates the trainers in sight and knows the start menu will be disabled the second you step into thier line of sight.
Trainers who are not in view are not calculated in advance thus you are able to open the start menu before the game calculates the trainer that is now in view.
You don't need to wait to get HM02 (Fly) either as you can catch an Abra much sooner and Teleport works just fine.
I'm having a blast in pokemon red on the ds atm!
Caught Gengar Mew Machamp Dragonite Scyter and Pinsir, found missingno with special of 81 cloned candy and masterballs. This video is pure awesomeness, especially with the pokemon bank thing. Good job.
Can we store pokemon from first gen to poke bank yet ?
+George Asimakopoulos Pretty sure they're adding that when pokemon sun & moon come out
hope you saved and cloned those TM's. mmmm, mega kick.
+Ulti-Apelio i've been using the long range trainer glitch to find different pokemon too :D I got myself a Lapras and various safari zone pokemon that way xD
What special Stat is required for Gengar??
If the number of the special stat is 256, it will count as 0. Therefore, the counter restarts. I used my Gengar with a Special Stat of 295 and i found a Graveler. Since 256 counts as 0, 295 - 256 = 39.
So helpful! Used this to catch a Charmander! :D The tricky part is indeed finding a Ditto on your first try, since any other Pokemon could show up and ruin the process, but if a Ditto does show up, it's easy sailing
+mega sean It won't ruin the process if you don't find Ditto on your first try. I've done this like 50 times and run into plenty of Pidgeys, Pidgeottos, and Glooms before I found a Ditto.
Metalhead91 Oh that's handy to know :) What about the lack of other trainers should you beat them all? Will that ruin the glitch?
I beat all the trainers except the Gambler and Bird Keeper the OP uses in this video. I just make sure I lose to him so I can reuse him for the glitch. You can't make the glitch happen if you've beaten everyone. Does that help?
Metalhead91 Yeah, thanks! ^-^
Now this is a video that truly has aged 11 years
In pokemon yellow, you need to be further into the game to do this because dito doesn't appear in the route he showed.
+Tobi386XD How far? I'm in cinnabar island
+Braidy idk the names in english. There is a dito in the basement of the 'pokemon house' (i believe so its called) which is on that island all the way in the south

Just saying; after you've flown away from long distance trainer, go to a Pokémon Centre, go to the PC, change box to save the game and then switch off the game and boot it up again. After you've done this, you will be able to pause the game, but the glitch will still be active. So by doing this, you can get to different areas using Fly to find trainers to activate the next part of the glitch.
You can save at any part of the glitch and even switch off the game and the glitch will still be active.
Does anyone knows the special values for Vulpix and other Blue exclusive mons?
Hey man, thanks, every glitch for mew i found was about Cerulean city, but you found another way.My respects.
So, why are there 190 codes if there's only 151 pokemon? My head hurts
Oh. Not all the numbers are there.
Its because there are 39 versions of missingNo, each representating a pokemon of gen 2 that did not make it into the first game

@@FungIsSquish lol
What version is this? Looks a little different from yellow.
i hear if you use 6 growls on the ditto before defeating it it will make your mew(/whatever pokemon you fight when the menu closes) level 1, which can then jump to level 100
It's not surprising that you've heard this, since you have +1'd a comment on my video explaining that trick
Yes, so long as you have enough undefeated trainers to fight after flying from the Gambler (since you don't actually fight the Gambler, he is reusable).
I did that trick and my game crashed when I tried to withdraw from a box, so make sure your new "level 1" pokemon can fit in your party when you fight them.
Yup, it's true, it's called the "experience underflow glitch" or something like that. I did it with a Mew and got it to level 100.
I was looking to get a second Mew to level it up legally, and get its original moveset.
+Acting DeMickey Thats for sure

I have used "that trainer" after Celadon- left side of nugget bridge instead of the trainer showed in video.

Hey what is the highest special you can find before fighting Brock? I want to do this glitch or whatever but want to see the variety of Pokémon I can possibly get
Great video. I'm going to have to try this in the future. Even though it is a lot more harder than just putting in a GS for that Pokemon you want it seems fun lol
I remember the missing no. Glitch from way back when and my question is: how the fuck did someone come across these these? I mean the whole sequence of events is really precise and doesn’t seem like you could accidentally do it
Somebody please tell me how this was figured out in the first place ???
10 year anniversary the makers released the information on it..it was a secret within the creators to use ..then they released it to everyone

Pokemon logic?
Pokemon logic?
changes to the Ditto's attack stat determines the level of the wild encounter. So a normal attack stat = level 7. Lower the attack stat 5 times (i.e. use Growl 5x) and it will be at level 2.
why would we only lower the attack stat 5 times? 6 is larger and better
what if you don't run into ditto first try

Does it work for Pokémon red not just yellow

AWESOME!! Thanks for posting. Anyone catch Alakazam without a master ball? This is hard, at level 7 all he knows is teleport. BTW I'm using a level 52 Zapdos to make him appear.
the only thing that affects the pokemon you catch is the special stat value of the last pokemon you encounter. we only use ditto since we know what it's special stat will be

Because it's a stupid question with a disappointing answer that's asked in every other glitch video in existence.
Pure chance. Don't tell me you've not been curious about trying to press the start menu while in line of sight of a trainer? Now imagine a hundred million players thinking the same thing. Do you honestly think glitches like that stay hidden?

how many times can you do this glitch in a single save file?

If you LOSE to the trainer... Infinity
yes, you can reuse the gambler (or whatever trainer you used) as many times as you want as long as you never actually fight him
Could this glitch be used to catch Ghost?
sort of. there is a missingno in that hex slot but it will appear as the ghost sprite
v0id19 your profile picture perfectly matches the comment
Exygin If you use the glitch to catch marowak, it will first appear as a ghost. The only place you find it wild is in the safari zone, so if you encounter it anywhere else, it will appear as ghost (cubone's mother).
Yes you can, it's index number is 184 I believe ;)
You can catch Marowak in the wild in victory road
How on earth are you supposed to get a pokemon with only 2 special?!
The lowest I've seen is 6
John pettrucci and Pokemon? alright!! Haha
And here's me thinking "This sounds an awful lot like Dream Theater, but I've never heard this on any of their albums"

the best thing about this video? the john petrucci music!! did not expect that
You need the ditto in order to choose what pokemon you want to encounter. If you just go to lavender after the fight, what you encounter will based off that trainer's last pokemon's special stat value
Here's a like just for John Petrucci. Weird saying this but this is the first album I was introduce to him.
I can't find the pokémon I want, I tried to get a Mankey by using my Ninetales (52 Special) twice but I ended up getting a pidgey and Missingno instead. What are you not allowed to do while doing this glitch? Does pressing start or going into the box screw things up?

@v0id19 hey friend does all that trainer stuf can be made with any trainer or it have to be made with the specific trainer u show on the video?
History is repeating it self. All this is now relevant once again! Just like the olden times :P rereleases of the old games is gold man.
This is great but do you know where I can find another of the first trainer? I already did the Mew glitch and beaten the gambler near the entrance to Celadon. Where can I find another? Also, the special stat required is that of your own Pokemon? How can I change the special of my own Pokemon to the one I want?

@v0id19 Excuse me, I was wondering about this trick... Isn't this a one time thing? Like, after battling the dude with ditto, you can't face him anymore. How can I catch all the pokemon if this is a one time trick?
I have a question about this glitch v0id19, do you have to fight a trainer before finding a ditto? Can't you just go find a ditto right away if you have the correct special stat number?
you can encounter anything you want before the ditto, all that matters is that the last pokemon you encounter has the correct special stat
the "special" stat of the pokemon the ditto transforms into will determine what you find
Yes and Mewtu comes by 131 Special (;
Really, really excited to see if this works lol. Hopefully this means I can get all 3 starter Pokemon into one team
Great video, so Yellow version has 14 (with mew) exclusive Pokemon missing. Are there enough trainers that you can ditto glitch off of, to get all 151? with ONLY the Ditto glitch AKA "method 4"?
You can reuse the same trainer as you never even battle them.
@TheAmazingMirror yeah, but not MY pikachu. I saw another vid on how to catch a wild raichu, but I can't do it because I already beat the guy at the water next to Nugget Bridge. And the people in your vid I don't think I've battled yet, but what's the 'special' # to run into raichu? 'Cause if I know that, hell I can finally catch a raichu.
Could you somehow name the values needed to get a certain pokemon on maybe a forum? That w me the trouble of me asking you specific questions and you answering them. Like a list?EX:
special stat 65= pidgeot. THNX

No entiendo. El ditto se transforma en mi nidoqueen nivel 53 y me sale un Golem. Mi hitmonlee de 53 me da un Tentacool. Mi Vaporeon de 91 da un Gastly
ty for this can't wait to try it - what do u mean by first generation games - i have pokemon red - will it work on that?
Three questions, does this work in the japanese versions and can you do this tricks how many times you want? and is what jarrett Williams said true
Sorry for the typos
yeah the guy right to the left of him works, there's a fisher on the docks south of Lavender town, someone somewhere in Mt. Moon (i don't remember exactly where), and a few others
What happens if you don't encounter Ditto first? Can you just run away from battles until you find Ditto, or do you have to turn off and start all over again? I'm assuming that if you did fight a different Pokemon instead of Ditto you would just get whichever Pokemon that wild Pokemon's Special stat indicated.
The only thing I don't get is how does the glitch not normally work with the other trainer that you're battling?
I hope you still respond. Here's my understanding. I got to trainer of screen, fly before the fight triggers. Now do I have to fight and finish a trainer or can I skip this step and go straight to the dittto?
+Austin LaCour You can try it out by yourself since the video is like 7 years old. Dont save the game and if it doesnt work just reset and do the usual way.
You need to fight the trainer first, otherwise it won't work
You can actually skip the fight. After escaping with fly, go to fuchsia city, change box in the pokecenter and turn off the 3ds and on again; this way you'll be able to use the Start button again. Now use Strength on the boulder that is next to the Pokecenter and move it one tile away. Now proceed with the ditto step. It works 100%, no need to battle different trainers every time.
if you encounter missingno. this way does it still cause weird things to happen on yellow and does it make your 6th item have an infinite amount still?
If you use growl the maximal number of times against the ditto before fainting it, will the mew (or any other glitch pokemon) be encountered at level 1? Because if so, you can level the mew just once and it will jump to level 100.
Isn't the menu stuck and doesnt open when you enter the route where the glitch was done?
Matt R it won’t open till you beat a trainer and do it
once you caught the pokemon of choice i.e. mew, then do you go back to the same trainer battle to start the glitch again?
So this is basically indexing the stat value from the list in the Pokedex and setting the Pokémon spawned based on that?
I realize this is a bit late but can you use the same trainer encounter outside of vermillion to initiate the glitch over and over to get every pokemon thats not capturable in pokemon yellow?
not exactly. the correlation doesn't hold for the glitches, which are a common use for this trick.
Why In The Description Is There 190 Combinations When There Are Only 151 Pokémon In The First 3 Games
CAN SOMEONE HELP?? I've battled almost every trainer, but the only one that I haven't battled that appears and walks UP to me is at the top of Cerulean City (to the left of nugget bridge.) Will this glitch work for me? What city is "Adjacent" to Cerulean City?
That trainer is technically outside of cerulean city, so just fly back to cerulean after you defeat ditto. I just used this with that exact trainer and it worked :)
you can only trade between r/b/y and g/s/c. If you were to trade them to gen 2, they would be whatever pokemon its hex value corresponds to.

Erm, If After I Perform The Glitch But While In The Grass Looking For Ditto I Encounter Another Pokemon Instead Does The Glitch Still Works Or Do I Have To Restart The Glitch Again?.
It's Fine As Long As The Last Pokemon You Encounter Is A Ditto. Also, The Chance Of Encountering A Ditto Increases When You Learn How To Capitalize
@Hackerinni the glitch doesn't use a gameshark which is what i said. although technically i could have just used missingno to get 96 masterballs...
So just to clarify the trainer you have to catch with the start button has to want to battle you as soon as they pop up in the screen?
yes, that is correct
you said the hex values for pokemon yellow were different. if so please provide a link to that? the hex values from the links seem to be the same for R/B only
They are the same, the video owner had no idea
+WizardDani cheers! still haven't tried it. does it corrupt the game at all??
+BozChord not at all, especially if you're using a 3DS.
yes, the pokemon league works if you've already initialized the glitch by escaping from another trainer. but you need that other trainer...
On the description, was that hex chart for pokemon red and blue or pokemon yellow?
hey i've got a few questions:
1.how do i get more master balls legitimately without messing up my game?
2.if i catch mew this way on r/b/y will it mess up my game?
3. will catching Missingno. mess up my game this way also?
4. if i do these on a GBA SP(eg, catching missingno.) will my games be messed up also?
5. after ur game froze was there permanent damage?
6. does catching missingno damage ur game or just seeing it?
If you use Growl 6 times it will be level 1,if it's not a first stage pokemon (Pokemon with no evolutions don't apply to this) it will become level 100 if you get under 51 exp.
wait so what do you have to do to catch a specific pokemon every different time
