  • Over a couple of weeks I have been observing a group of molly miller blennies that have setup a habitat on the rudder of a boat. This rudder is a smorgasbord of blennies: Molly Miller, Goldline, Pearl, Saddled, Redlip, Mimic, Seaweed and two bar triplefin. Day in day out, I notice that each species have their own specific spot on the rudder. Every time I visit, they are perched on their respective spots. I put my hand on the side of the rudder to keep myself steady and immediately the Molly Millers come up to my fingers, they stare at “ME”, not at my fingers, really straight at my mask and then nibble on my fingers. Sometimes they even get balsy enough to climb on my fingers to the top of my hand. I am LOVING every minute of these interactions with these ridiculously cute little fish.
I adore these little blennies that are very inquisitive and curious in nature. OK, most fish geeks will admit that in general blennies are very cute and have a lot of personality but in my experience Molly Millers have a curiosity and playfullness that I do not see in others.
The one single goldline blenny that kept its distance from me started learning from the molly millers and started coming up to my fingers too. It is not yet bold enough to nip at my finger. And before anyone says “Is this right? Are you bothering them?” To be clear: I show up, watch and I do not put my fingers where they are or close to them. They come to where my fingers are on the side, so they are essentially approaching me.

The Molly Millers look like they have little crew cut hairstyles! Oh they are such cute little treasures!

Oh yeah, they are my favorite blennies. Cute, stylish cirri, and curious/playful personality. :) I visited this group regularly for a while and then eventually they were gone.

Do these Blennies all end up with a green or greenish body when they mature? Or are the females more drab?

I have seen a lot of Molly Millers and photographed them, based on what I have observed, mature ones always end up with the darkish / greenish colors. Female vs male determination - that I am not so sure you can make with only color change. For instance, Sailfin blennies that are white were considered female and dark were considered male for a while but in the past few years (might be longer), it was determined (by ichthyologists - not me :))... that this was in fact not correct. If you are into Molly Millers, check out my instagram account for more photos (gotta go a couple of years back).
