Great Video...thank you for all the work. One comment I want to make is how I believe the brake sensor works (and the reason that you are not getting an error with the sensor disconnected). When the brake wears down to the point that the sensor hits the disc, then the disc will wear away the sensor's outer insulation at which point the contact/wire of the sensor will ground out on the disc and complete a circuit that sends the message that your brakes need replacement. Hence, if the contact of the sensor is not touching any metal part of the vehicle to complete the sensor, you will not get an brake wear indication.
Again, great job and thank you!
great video...but there i a slightly easier way.
The sliders that you show in your video can be removed....then the caliper comes off without having to undo the supertight 18mm nuts.
SO...
Take off wheel, loosen brake fluid cap etc.
Remove rattle clip.
Then force piston back.
Remove two dust caps off slider posts...undo with 7mm? allen key.
Use needle nose pliers and wriggle a bit to pull the pins ...AND..... bam the whole thing comes off leaving the mount attached.
Anyway.....thought your video was great as are all your others...thanks
Sounds like an interesting alternative....but I find removing the 18 mm bolts is easy enough, and I was even able to use a 19mm hex socket on them with no problems.
An old video but still helpful and relevant. I'd add, that if you don't have channel locks or a brake piston depresser tool, you can also lube up the rubber boot around the brake piston, where they meet and use wide wise-grips and gently rotate the piston, making sure not to grab the rubber or that it doesn't twist along. The rotation will also depress the piston. Not sure why it works, but it does, have done it on many different makes and models, successful each time without missing a beat.
Great videos I'm currently trying to find videos on factory reset ECU hope you put one out there one day 2008 bmw 750li
Thanks for this video, it makes everything quite clear. One suggestion is that instead of using channel-locks to compress the piston, I found a "brake pad spreader" tool at NAPA for less than ten dollars. Very easy to use. It's probably available elsewhere too.
Next time use a steel brush to clean out the calipers and then just use 5 % of the red stuff on the back and use it to help the breakpad slide better trough the calipers. This will prevent your breakpads got stuck and from sided wear and squeeking. Also a good idea would be to mesure the thickness of your breakdiscs to make sure the have enough metal left. Hallo from Germany ;)
I am not sure what the moly lube that comes with the brake pads is, but I'll bet using nickel-based anti-seize compound with work just as well. You might even be able to buy brake grease at the auto parts store, maybe even mix the two into a paste.
@Mark Berenger For your information I am a graduate mechanical engineer with a professional license and more than 40 years experience. I don't know what you think you were saying, but you might want to leave snarky comments to someone with more than any 3rd grade intelligence....and the manners even a 1st grader knows.
The information you put out there is literally priceless, haha.
Also whats with the tape? just dont wanna see all the "Errors" on dash?
Anyway thanks again for being such a great help!
MatthiasAI just shows how his car is completely garbage. And he can’t take care of it.
thanks for the vids, you were instrumental in my decision to buy 08 e66. given all the expensive dealer maintenance req'd for these cars. :)
Glad the videos could help:) Thanks for watching:)
very good informative video.....i'm off to change rear pads on my 06 750li.
Thanks for the video Chris. I save so much money because of this video.
If you think the CRC Brake cleaner is good you shoudl try the Fleetrite Brake cleaner. You would buy it at an International dealer or other heavy duty truck Dealers.
I have a 2007 750.... if I'm getting a message regarding my rear brakes... is it safe to assume my sensor is bad (used up) also?
Thanks... Steve
I dont know if your e66 is like this but my 08 e66 requires different brakes on the rear.
What a hard lesson i learned today
:(
Fronts are changed....now gotta wait for the rears from amazon
Chris your awesome thank you for making this video.
Hello,
Can i do it when i have electric handbrake ?
Can i press the pist back ?
I wouldnt like damege my rear brake.
Thanks for your answer
My 2008 750i has the electronic parking brake and I just did this job yesterday. I bought a "brake pad spreader" tool at NAPA for under ten dollars (it was on sale for $6.99) and the tool makes pushing the piston back very easy. Much easier than using channel-locks.
Great Vid DIYsavecash
Hey I just got my ABS fixed at myairbags.com
naw im not advertising just sayin i noticed the black tape and I know how annoying it is to ride around with that on. but just to let you know for about $150 they fixed mine
thank you very clear video ,save my money
Hello, great video thank you for posting. I have the same question as one that's already been posted. Since the E66 has the electronic parking brake, 2002 model, do I need a scan tool to set the e-brake (retract the piston) or can I simply push it back (as in this video)? I have the scan tool that does this, just wondering if it's required, thank you.
DAMN! THOSE ROTORS LOOK PRETTY WORN TOO!
+M G Exaclty....They should have been checked for wear as well...My question is...do they slip right off the hub?....I need to replace mine...
Hello, could you show on video how to change bulb of the angel eyes on E65/66?
I saw some guys to take of whole fromt lamp, or even the front bumpeer to be losen...is that necessary?
By the way , I both the LED lamps, they came with some king of transformator, could you show how to install it and where to leave the transformator?
thanks a lot if you read me..
keep on producing videos of e65!!!
best regards

Hello Chris;

Hello, yes that's a job I still need to do.
You're a great resource and do an amazing job with all your videos.
спасибо за видео!
good job!
Thank you:)
when do I know when to choose the brake pad ?
I have a 2006 750li and when I'm in reverse my car still rolls a little after pressing on the break . I have to press them really hard . Do you think I just reed to replace my back breaks or is there something else wrong ? Thank you
I assume you are talking about this happening while driving and not using the parking brake? If so, something else is probably wrong, since the front brakes provide about 80% of all braking power. If you are sure the front brakes are good, then you may have: low brake fluid, a leak in the system, a failing brake booster or master cylinder. If you have to press really hard to keep from rolling, it indicates that the system is not developing full hydraulic pressure.
have u sold it yet..any problems
do the rear brake pads wear out quicker that the front.
No, exactly the opposite. The front brakes are balanced to provide about 80% or more of braking power and as such wear out at least twice as fast as rear brakes. This is done to assure better control while braking.....the rear brakes ever lock up, the back end of the car will break loose and the car will be out of control.
Do I have replace the sensor every time I change the brakes
You could inspect the sensor for wear and if there has been no contact, you might be able to re-use it. But if you have gotten the brake wear message, the sensor is worn and can't be re-used. On the other hand, it is a $20 part, why take chances with it?
So do you have to change the sensors?
Yes, unless you want to have a constant Replace Brake Pads message until you do. The sensors can be bought on eBay or from online parts stores for less than $20 each. Plus, you will not know your pads are worn until you start hearing grinding sound, which is metal-on-metal contact between the pads and the rotors. Then you have to change the pads right away because you are losing braking power.
Should have shown more detail when taking things apart with the brakes. Too much skipping through the process.
Your sensor is missing a litle spring that is normally atatcht on it thats why your car did not warn you !
Hallo from Germany ;)
Daco Far ok thank you for letting me know:)
Find you a good mechanic
What's the red thing you put on the brake pad ?
The red stuff is brake noise silencer that helps the noise of braking, you can use other brake silencer stuff as well, just make sure you get the right stuff, if your unsure you can ask the guy at the shop.
ok, I've just bought a caliper lube: Not sure if it's the right thing :
shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/permatex-ultra-disc-brake-caliper-lube-.5-oz-85188/99997944-P?searchTerm=brake+grease
That stuff looks good to me:)
Safety point - use jack stands! Makes no sense to leave a tire on for safety.... physics of gravity say ouch if you are under the car when the hydraulics on the jack fail.
Dont talk so much just do it! Make less comments
thaths not how ou change pads you see the rubber which are rain shields you remove those two tabs in push the caliper back then take a star wrenceh and losen them its not good to teach people the wrong way of doing things
Just because you do it that way doesn't make the other way wrong. Check out a shop manual sometime and you will find the video shows a recommended way of removing the caliper.
Man this guy need to stop
When do I know when to change the brake pad ?
Hello, you'll know without checking if you hear metal on metal, that's the pad finished and it's rubbing against the rotor, lets just say it doesn't sound good. Other then that our cars will tell you through the idrive when it's time, but I actually ran mine for another few months. You see how worn they are in the video, don't wear them down that much, I was a little risky.
You will get a message on the dashboard disply telling you to replace the pads.
