currently have an everything half off sale for my store! everything but the books (yes you can still use the 30% off code for those) is 50% off this weekend! also, i would like to make a note about my ending thoughts. i think it is important for white writers, and writers in general to write for all kinds of people, but it has become frustrated how so many works about people of color are NOT created by people of color. it's gotten frustrating because like i said "that is not your story to tell" and it feels a bit like puppetry because too many stories that focus on poc are written by white people, and it's sad how the stories (which is not alot compared to this) focused on poc written by poc get overlooked. also i said what i needed to say about dolores in the disclaimer and in her section of the video I'm not going back and forth with anyone about it.
I truly hate how much this trope is reflective of how people treat Black women’s pain in real life. The amount of times I’ve been going through severe hardship, and I’ve been told how “strong” I am as a form of comfort. Constantly having to navigate trauma is not an indicator of strength. What if I’m weak and what if the trauma makes me weaker? What if I don’t even want to be strong, what then?
Literally! Princess and the Frog is a great example. Her friend is an amazing friend, don’t get me wrong, but they somehow manage to make Tiana a side character in her OWN movie. I am SICK and TIRED of black women not being allowed to express themselves. As a black woman, I want to see characters be relatable in terms of being vulnerable.
i literally took the charlotte section for tiana's part cause i was not in the mood for people to be defending the attention charlotte gets from tiana in both the movies and fandom.
Thank you for speaking on how “ the strong black woman trope “ negatively affects us in real life. Two years ago, my mom took me to the hospital for chest pains and the nurses and the doctor did not take me serious despite the fact that I was bent over in pain and I was CRYING. I was 24 years old an adult but I could not drive myself to the hospital so my mom took me. My mom had to speak up for them to finally do something. They had me waiting just to get a room. My mom had to ask them for pain killers as well. Thank God it turns out I was experiencing chest pains due to stress from my old job not a heart attack but if it was I could have DIED. Also I’m a young dark skin black woman and I’m very short and petite. I’m an introvert and I’m quiet and yet my entire life I was treated like a man and anytime I did try to speak up I was “ aggressive “ and “ had an attitude “. I was even mistreated at my old job by a white customer who said I was “ scary “ because I defended myself when she wrongfully accused me of being a thief. She also threatened to call the police on me. I know this may sound ridiculous but I’m scared of white women and I don’t trust most of them because their tears often put my life in DANGER. That wasn’t the first time I was almost harmed because of a white woman but that was the worst experience I had. Im also scared of most men after I was SA’d and harassed multiple times. I’m literally scared to go out by myself because I’m afraid of being mistreated. I have to ask my boyfriend to come out with me. I even had to get a remote job because I refuse to risk my life again working in the office. Now I’m suffering from anxiety panic disorder and depression because of this as well as my childhood trauma with my toxic family. This is why the strong black woman trope is DANGEROUS.
I'm not afraid of white women but u are right their tears is a threat. I had this old manager lady above me lie and had me come to work knowing I wouldn't be able to prove I did the hrs. I cussed her out through text cuz she had the audacity to say that I am bad for leaving the job (with those patients in need) and called the cops on me over the fact that I cussed her out. The cops are till this day guarding that building from me
Literally because of this trope, I learned at 26 that it is okay to breakdown and cry when I have had enough emotionally and mentally. I was always told to be tough, be strong, don’t show others that you’re weak. Being “strong” all the time is so draining and now watching the trope after detoxing myself of that mess it just makes me cringe and hurt for other black women and growing black girls. We go through a lot as black women and it’s important to embrace every emotion we feel.
@@suezcontours6653 We have been effected by MISOGYNY/MISOGYNOIR. That was the only reason Feminism came to be for black women, they were mistreated by all men. Black women made Feminism big then got abandoned; by white women. Then we created womanism, i also believe all Black Americans should visit Africa. Africa is also Misogynistic because of colonization, it used to have Patriarchy/Matriarchy but it was not a system of abuse. Every country/continent has its own issues, but right now Africa is similar to Asia; in its mass mistreatment of African women/children. Its not a fantasy where everything is better for black people, they have their own issues. M
I just want us as black women to have a character we can see and relate to that is allowed to be human and have emotions like we do. I am very mentally unstable and have a lot of trauma and people always tell me that I’m strong because I hide it so well. They don’t know about all the mental breakdowns, anxiety, and depression. The fact that I feel like I can’t even stand up for myself or advocate for myself speaks volumes. I literally don’t even know how to focus on myself and people have the audacity to call me strong. I just want to be vulnerable for five minutes.
It's funny to point that this is what's important to you. This is a first world problem if I ever seen one. If you're fighting for representation in movies as a sign of equality then you don't have many problems. If you want an interesting character just make one or support creators who do. Black women in every metric are doing great (economically, health, education, crime, etc). The only challenge women really have are relationships which are self imposed and microaggressions. It's sucks, but nothing to cry at. I'm a black man with 3 masters and working on a PhD while working full time; i experience shit all the time, but there is no point crying over it. Black ppl have it better than our ancestors, but it's not fair and will never truly be.
I can already tell this video is gonna be amazing and thank you for discussing this, it's an antiquated trope that needs to be retired. The dehumanization that black people well black women in particular deal with is already extremely prevented in the real world and our day to day lives that we should at least get some peace and joy in fiction. Moral of the story let black girls have fun in stories instead being everyone else's emotional support.
I hate the strong black women trope because it goes back to the stereotype that we’re masculine and why don’t need anybody and that we’re strong and tough. Every time there’s a movie or show that has a black female as a lead or has mostly black females in it it’s we’re always played as the strong, independent, a fighter, or black women empowerment roles. Why can’t there be a feminine, submissive, sensitive female characters that just happens to be black?
I agree 💯 percent. What happened to strong black men in the lead? The closest we have is the fire captain in Chicago Fire and Ernie Hudson in Quantum Leap. But they are supporting roles. The last show with a strong black male lead was Avery Brooks from Star Trek Deep Space 9. Please Hollywood! Bring strong black male leads. Also, the strong black women in shows like The Cosby show always have to be right and perfect. That show today is sexist. I wish the women in these shows have flaws and not be perfect all the time. Nobody is perfect. I saw some of The Rookie: Feds and turned it off. It was unrealistic on how she does her job. I wouldn't hire her at all. I hope we have more flaw female characters because that's what makes us human.
I personally think that it's because it'll take the spotlight off of non black women and it'll make us seem like we're just as sweet feminine and fragile as others and I think subconsciously non black women rather have us In that light because in some ways it makes them look better kind of like the "at least I'm not them" mindset. Like as long as there's something to compare them to and make them look better they're complacent. That's why they dismiss our issues, I know most don't understand and see it not some know and don't care because other women don't have to deal with it. And I think that's why they see us as such heavy competition when they see us happy living well with little to no stress.
@I Don’t Get Paid Enough For This I honestly think Disney is ignoring how well Encanto as a production did when Feozen got loads of stuff with in a year. Hmmm, I wonder what the difference is, hmm, you money-gobbling machine.
One of Delores' lines in We Don't Talk About Bruno was: _He told me that the man of my dreams would be just out of reach, betrothed to another_ This implies that Delores already is in love with one person specifically. That person being Mariano. Also, Isabella and Mariano weren't in a loving relationship. Mariano wanted a passionate relationship but Isabella didn't like him back. Isabella only got with him because Alma betrothed her to Mariano. That's why it was fine for Mirabel to set Mariano up with Delores. I like the fact that Delores got together with Mariano because they are what the other wanted. Isabella was forced into the relationship by Alma. It was implied that Mariano didn't like his relationship with Isabella in All Of You: _Hey Mariano, why so blue?_ _I just have so much love inside_ Then Mirabel introduces Delores, who has previously been keeping quiet until she finally has the chance to spill her secrets and confess. It is weird to date your cousin's ex but when he and your cousin weren't in a happy relationship (one that wasn't by their own volition, I must add), I believe that deserves a pass.
As an Afro-Latino, I identified as a female all me life until recently. It is absolutely exhausting to hear how “inutil” (weak/useless) I am just because I can’t handle things. Also the inherent racism there is a Latino culture when it comes to afro-latinos and dark skinned latinos. I have been gifted whitening soap way too many times.
😱 Gifted whitening soap?! That’s horrible?! They would never give a white person Blackening soap?! What is wrong with them?! I am so sorry you felt like that. Just know that your skin is beautiful.
OMG YES! I was waiting for someone to point this out. This is why the stereotype keeps perpetuating of how black people are able to handle pain better and therefore need little pain killers :/
I’m not quite sure if the writing of encanto was unintentional. Part of it feels intentional. Alma favored julieta’s side of the family because isabela looked like a younger version of her, and Pepa’ does not which is extremely gross of her. I think the writers purposely made her that way. This could explain why Dolores has the power of hearing everything but never says anything and why Camilo shapes shifts to be anything but himself. Antonio having the power of animals might be a symbolism for the freedom the family is about to experience in coming days. I think the fact that they chose that side of the family to be biracial is really where things ended up being the problem because had mirabel and her sisters been afro Latina as well this wouldn’t of been seen as nearly a big of problem.
My thing is, why can’t they be both. Like for example one of my black ocs Meqi will kick ass if necessary to defend herself or others but you would be a damn lie to say she doesn’t cry. Even little things make her cry like a cute puppy video or needles. Sometimes she needs to be protected and that’s something we need to see more I think
Balance is harder to pitch when you just have an idea and not the money do it all yourself. It's why you see women doing feats men would normally go whooping all the ass, yet I still say Kill Bill did balance the best The Bride went through everything. We saw her at her peak and at her worse. It'll be hard to repeat such without them going "just make her stronger"
it took me a while to figure out why even as a little black girl i was never that interested in tiana and it finally hit me recently. as the sweet, imaginative person that i am i find it kinda suspicious that disney's only black princess was the one to be a realist who didn't believe in fairytales. sure, it was an interesting mindset for a female disney protagonist to be so driven but you have to sit back and wonder why she's the only one not allowed to gaze off at the starry sky dreaming of some happy ending for herself (reason: her blackness).
Same here! I like her much more now as a late teenager/adult but that's sort of a problem in and of itself. Disney Princesses are for children. Specifically for little girls. What does it say if the only Black princess is less relatable to little girls(in my personal experience, at least) than the other princesses, and more relatable to adult women? That Black girls are more adultlike and less innocent than white girls, and don't get to just relax? Little girls deserve a Black princess who got to have a full romantic whimsical fantasy and dream and have fun and not be burdened by oppression, pain, and realism all the time. We deserve a princess who isn't steeped in the harsh, unequal reality that is racist/sexist American society. As a child, I was very disappointed with the ending of the Frog because she went back to working. I felt like she was "barely" a princess because of it, and so it took me years to gravitate towards her. The other princesses got fairytale endings where they were whisked off to a castle and got to live in a fantasy society where they didn't have to work for a living. Why couldn't Tiana get that? (reason: her Blackness)
Let black women be multifaceted. Let them be soft and vulnerable. And protect them at all costs. Though y’all are perfectly capable of protecting and standing up for yourselves, it’s nice to have that support when you really need it.
What you said about how Alma was treating Dolores’ side of the family is very very spot on, especially when it comes to Latin households where there is a Black side of the family. Anti-Blackness is integral to the family structure, in PR there’s a common ideology called Blanqueamiento, the most popular phrase is “mejorar la raza’ which translates to “improve (whiten) the race.” The overt favoritism of the non-Black kids/family members is kinda hard to miss IRL, so it inevitably bled into the writing for Encanto. I personally have beef with LMM because he shouldn’t be writing or producing any stories that contain Black characters because he has not got it right, not once.
I remember hastily tweeting that I was disappointed by the lack of Afro-Latin characters in the film. Now granted I hadn’t seen it yet, I just saw a lot of the promotional material and could tell the film didn’t have any “main” Black characters. But the way people were eating me up in my mentions 😭 everyone kept pointing to Pepe’s family and I was like I see that there are Black people in the film, but it feels like they’re side characters. Then I finally watched and I still felt the same way lol personally I will say I was excited to f i n a l l y see an American piece of children’s media that included Black Latinx in the narrative. Because typically in American media, all Latinx are depicted as white or mestizo and the same goes for Latin media, Black Latinx are virtually invisible in both. But after that initial excitement wore off, I was pissed lol still happy that my nephews can watch and see themselves in Antonio, but the fact that he’s barely in the film… like come on. And then to have Dolores basically silent the entire film? It very much feels like the writers knew they *had* to include Afro-Latin characters if the setting was Columbia, but they put no more thought into developing them. That infuriates me more cause y’all could’ve just had your non-Black story and left us out of it if that was the case.
Tbh, I thought she paid less attention to them because their gifts were less important. They did contribute yes, but she had more chores and expectations for Luisa and Isabella than she did Dolores, Antonio, and Camilo. She was struggling to find a use for Antonio's gift, in one scene where she said she was sure theyd find one eventually. She uses Camilo to help with labor but most of that goes to Luise. Dolores was only used to eavesdrop on Isabella's suitor.
@@devillass6025 lmao Isabella’s gift was not more important. Alma saw herself in Isabella and that’s why she pressured her so much to have the life she couldn’t have. It was favoritism. Shapeshifting, talking to animals, and super human hearing are far more valuable than simple flowers (since Isabella only knew how to grow flowers up till 21 yrs old). Pepa’s family had way more potential to help the community, yet Alma favored Julieta’s kids instead. Edit: Isabella was 21 when her powers expanded, not 19 my bad. Still all she did was aesthetics, farmers did the the real work along with Pepa controlling the weather.
I get back lash about setting boundaries often.😮💨 I completely agree that I want more black people to be in control of black narratives. We know at this point, how well done black narratives can be with black people in the writing room. Directing the films! Jordan peele, Issa Rae, and Ryan Cooglar as just a few examples! I want more! And I encourage any black creative to make more stories! And I even put that on myself. 🤟🏾❤️
Dark Skinned women in particular seem to suffer from this stereotype/trope the most in the media. They're often portrayed as warrior types and more masculine than that of a lighter skinned woman which is just odd to me.
The moment I saw the title I already knew what you were going to talk about. i remember a few videos back you went to a panel for black female authors I believe and one of the women said she was tired of having to be the strong black woman and how she wants to be sensitive and have a shoulder to lean on in hard times and show that she doesn't just have it all together
About Dolores, she has a BLACK Latino father. So I don't understand the discourse. "Latinos" isn't a race itself but people often seem to forget that. She can be called Black or Mixed.
Yep, Latino isn’t a race but generally, the great majority of us are a mixture of indigenous and Caucasian. Like my mom is very white, but my dad and sister are quite dark in comparison.
About Dolores. I'm Latina, I live in Mexico, and at least here our afro roots are very dismissed, and overshadowed. We make them invisible, we don't even care about learning more about our black heritage (and instead, there are more people bragging about their European blood). So yeah, we are very diverse here, but we're very racist and clasist too. And this has been this way since the colonial era when the Spanish castes (idk if that's the word for castas) forced us to have that judgment. "The more European the better" And is so sad... how deep this system was, that we are still thinking like this even though it was a long time ago. So... Yeah, we tend to be racist without noticing (the curious thing about latinos, is the fact that we are racist with ourselves, but not with other countries. That includes our Afro-American roots)
Somebody once decided to name off a list of black characters in anime when I bitched about wanting to see more black characters in anime…………. The good old fashion “sit down, shut up, and be happy with what you got” crap that happens every time we bring up concerns about how we get represented.
I hate the trope so much and as a writer I never wanna have my black characters or other POCs highlighted in a negative light, because enough is enough period!
Dolores loving Mariano is made pretty clear in ths songs and animation, and she loved him BEFORE they tried to marry him to Isabella (Bruno even fortells her such fate and she sing 'the man of my dreams would be just out of reach, bethroted to another'.). It wasn't her chasing 'a man', it was her being in love with someone she couldn't have becuase Abuela had plans. You can even make a case she pushed for Mirabell to investigate Bruno in hopes it might disrupt the engagement (she also definitely knew Isabella didn't want to marry him, so it's not like it's completely selfish). Listen to her lines and songs, she tells A LOT more about Bruno and pushes Mirabell pretty directly - which tells you she does speak about things she hears even if she's not supposed to, although not straight to your face.
The issue is that it’s clear that Mariano doesn’t know who Doleres is. So is her love because of Bruno’s vision? Or is her love based on this version she only hears
@@BabyGirlTiny Yeah, but he didn't really know Isa either and was plannign 5 kids with her, exactly like he wanted to marry Dolores the same day. He's a lovable idiot. You might as well ask if Mirabell actually loves her fmaily or onlyt saved them because hur dur prophecy. Also - we only knoiw 'one of my dreams will be out of reach' - there is nothing about Dolores falling in love, just that her prefect man will be taken.
The video could’ve been made with only Tiana. It only applies to her, even though most Cinderella’s have hard life’s and have to be “strong” before they find there prince and become a princess. Just look as Cinderella, she was made a slave in her own home.
That’s why I loved Cinderella 1997. None of that Strong Black Woman crap. Although she did have strength in her own way she was also allowed to be graceful, elegant, feminine, looked out for, and shine.
I'm so done with the strong black women trope, it's even harmful in the health community too. Like, black women are in pain, they should be allowed to find relief and be vulnerable instead of being told to "toughen up".
This is why I can't stand the "which disney princess are most like?" Question. The ONE black princess we have, I don't relate to. She just boils down to hardworking and strong, I mean I work pretty hard, but there is so much more to me than that. I'm so tired of explaining that to non black people and friends like a friend literally compared us to Tiana and Charlotte. 😒 I was like girl I'm nothing like Tiana, the only thing we have in common is we're both black. It's a shame because if there is anyone else who looks at the black princess we finally got, and they're like "Oh...I can't relate." We don't really have anymore black princesses to choose from compared to the like....9 white princesses? So if a white girl is compared to Cinderella, and she doesn't agree, she can say "Actually I'm more like Ariel"...or Snow White...Or Belle...Or Aurora...Y'all get it.
we are taught that black women being strong is a compliment and a positive attribute like… no. how many times have i told ppl telling bw they are “strong” isn’t the compliment they think it is but to them it’s “not that deep”?
Thank you so much for this video Harri. The Strong Black Woman Trope has always hit close to home. I've always had such a love or hate relationship with trope. As much as I can recognize the harmfulness it feels so familiar cuz it's the reality for so many of us my self including. I'd like to add the link between the the trope and desperation. I feel like a lot of us only feel like we can be soft and relaxed when we are in a relationship when we feel safe. So that's why we are willing to chase whatever we think will makes us feel safe so we can get the relief we always wanted. So watching Missy and Michiko break their backs for these mediocre white men hurt really bad. Just latching and clinging to the only hopes of a security.
The fact that you even have to add that disclaimer due to that discourse around Dolores's ethnicity is 🙃🙃🙃 Not to mention people tryna claim that being afro whatever doesn't mean you're black? Why they being called afro then? If they're not black then they wouldn't be called afro. Anyways, I need to watch the video and forget about this clown behavior.
You forgot about Suzy despite being a 3 year old and she is the nicest sweetest charecter there she has to be friends with Angelica and evan there are some episodes where Angelica will sabotage her. Like the girl deserved better for being the kind sweet talented soul she is
let me tell you, in ally grown up the spin off it got WORSE. literally always in distress cause of angelica. that girl was horrible and she still stayed around her. susie deserved much better.
also, i had already talked about susie in 3 other videos. in this one i wanted to focus on black women, not girls. black girls deal with enough being treated like they are adults so i did not include any girls in the video.
@@harriyanna thank you as someone who never watched much rugrats and the episodes I saw Suzy in I felt bad for her like Angelica once stole who dancing shoes and sabotaged the poor girl and somehow being the adapting kid she is managed to win. I also admired how she still liked the babies despite Angelica not liking them like the girl was the one holding the morality. What needs to be said is that White kids should not take advantage of there nonwhite friends because I'm noticing a distasteful thing where white kids get in trouble drag there non white friends who are smarter, more cautious kinder etc, friends into there own mess like it teaches them to not take accountability and to treat POC like crap
@@harriyanna Even though you didn't include girls, I feel like Alya Cesaire fits this trope too, which was talked about in your other video about her being the token Black girl. I haven't watched Miraculous Ladybug in a hot second because I hate it after season 4 but she is constantly comforting Marinette and helping her with her own emotional problems, which is great and exactly what a best friend should do. And yet Marinette hardly returns those feelings for her beyond getting her with Nino. Of course, Marinette is going to get more of the comfort and attention because she is the main character, but that's hardly an excuse. I don't remember if we ever see Alya break down and need help or hugs or reassurance from anyone. And when we do see her break down, she is on her own and even gets akumatized. The one time Marinette does get to comfort Alya back that I can distinctly recall is in Gang of Secrets, where Marinette helps Alya de-akumatize herself. But that is only used as a set-up to have Alya find out that Marinette is Ladybug, which means it's only used as an excuse to have Alya comfort Marinette AGAIN. *sigh* I'm sure Marinette is a good friend to Alya, but it's the writing that is the issue. That creative room is all-white, and it shows.
I hate this trope but this is why it’s important for black women to watch how we describe ourselves no we aren’t strong and don’t use black girl magic we aren’t magical we are humans we are vulnerable, compassion, courageous, beautiful etc.
What does Black Girl Magic have to do with this 😭 And it has nothing to do with how we describe ourselves and everything to do with how the world treats us.
@@imthebossmermaid3648 actually it does black women describe themselves as strong independent and magical no your a women and human so goodnight if you have an issue that’s your problem.
@@birdieboo2049 Well Goddess forbid Black women want to feel good about themseles ig. 🙄 Silly us, if we describe ourselves a certain way then we deserve to be stereotyped. That's our bad.
For me, I feel like why Alma favored Isabella more than Dolores because she probably saw her gift as more useful for helping the town since she was obsessed with earning the miracle. Also I’m so glad Tiana is gonna have her own show on Disney plus soon!
This was a good conversation, honestly I'm also tired of this stereotype of my sisters that the media portrays. How come non black women can be the damsel in distress in animated films but black women can't. I hope film studios hire more black writers in the hopes of black women see themselves in a better light. I hope this strong black woman trope ends.
Honestly, as a white boy who wants to write and create characters, this is extremely helpful for me! I'll keep these points in mind when I write poc, cheers! 😁
A word of advice is that you could have a Black woman be a co-writer with you! That way you can be checked whenever you accidentally write something that comes across as racist! Best of luck. 🥰
I think the whole point with Dolores loving Mariano, is that she probably loved him long before Alma thought of hooking Isabela up with him. Or Alma never even considered the idea that Dolores could be a good match for him. Plus Isabela never even wanted to marry him, so it’s obvious Alma never really consulted the girls on their opinions, she just wanted things her way.
Yesyesyes to your points about Dolores! I love the movie but I felt so bad for her having her feelings ignored and having to sit still and keep everyone’s secrets to herself. It was so sad to watch. I think she grew out of the trope by the end though, but it’s still sad to see what she was out through. And it’s entirely Alma’s fault of course, like why did she sideline Dolores to much, baby girl is just a few weeks younger than Isabela. I genuinely think she deserved better. Especially since she was only seen as the information broker of her family. Also dolores is super pretty, I would certainly check for her okay okay 👀
The Dolores part is even worse now that Jared has confirmed that Dolores had a hunch that Bruno was behind the walls and spoke up about it, but the adults in the family all gaslit her and told her that she was simply imagining it all. Woman needs a goddamn apology from every single adult in the family for making her think that she was just imagining shit. 😤
I wouldn't be surprised if someone will make a video about Harri that she is bitter or something later on. Those people are so ignorant. Just by the thumbnail and title they use make me so mad. I feel bad tbh for her.
Yeah I know I’m pretty sure all those people have nothing better to do so they decide to bully poor harri. They also just prove her point when she said people have a problem with anything a black woman says.
I developed a massive crush on that girl back in college few yrs ago. I watched the anime mostly just to see her; so much so in fact that I forget that Hatchin even exists and is one of the main characters
I don't know what show michiko is from but you dissecting her character and the way she views weakness touched my heart from the way it resonated with me. I didn't expect that with how I sometimes feel disconnected from femininity (and consequently black womanhood) and so my brain's been defaulting it to almost like toxic masculinity (that doesn't really work completely for me, I don't see myself as I guy, just likely a girl who leans more masculinely). Anywho, thank you for making this video, your stuff always pops off.
I agree with everything you said also I don't like dolores and mariano, she feels like a second choice.. I wish they would have paired her up with someone else.
Feels more like a checklist than anything. The two most interesting black female characters in media are for me: Elena from Street Fighter and Olivia from Pokémon. Elena is a very tall, sweet happy-go-lucky princess from Kenya, while Olivia can not make one step in the anime without getting comical injured. Not the strongest personalities, but they at leats stick out.
Whew, this is gonna be deep. I'll post my thoughts after watching this video. (UPDATE *I watched the video*) -- my thoughts: I'll say that this strong black woman trope needs expanding and more nuance in popular mainstream media. BWOC aren't robots and we don't have to act like over mechanical super robots or overly aggressive to be strong. There should be room for some vulnerability and emotional depth. As for this topic paralleling my every day life, I'm at a place now while I still believe in having a sense of strength and resilience but a healthy approach to it: communicating my feelings and opening up about my mental health more often instead of repressing them; putting my foot down with my parents when they start acting controlling and overprotective (as much as I love them) cause that is stressful and infringes on my agency and autonomy; on social media, stopping a conversation when it starts getting toxic to preserve my mental health; and stuff like that. Now this'll sound strange, but I'm kinda glad I have antisocial personality disorder (my late grandmother Barbara genetically passed this personality disorder down to me) cause when I'm in a place where I can't necessarily go through emotions I can utilize it so that I don't show any vulnerability in front of people who don't deserve to see it. And I walk away emotionally unscathed with my dignity and self esteem in tact. So anyways, those are my thoughts. Great video again as always! P.S. Shout out to that shout out to us Afro-Latinas in the beginning of the video. I 💗 Encanto and I 💗 Dolores
It’s cool that you embrace your personality disorder, a lot of people tend to demonize those with aspd and use “sociopath/psychopath” as an insult but just know you’re better than them okay? 😊
Michiko and Hatchin Spoilers I loved Michiko and Hatchin when I was in middle school. These nuances escaped my 13 year old brain, but hearing you bring it up again-yeah. All of it, yeah. I was so happy to see her but why did they make her so manic and angry? Like she was a bad mother to Hatchin, and Hatchin ended up alone with a child too, because of some shitty man. Couldn’t we have at least seen that cycle broken?
that ending PISSED ME OFF. mainly because this story was just about a black woman in pain and transferred that down to another person. was not their story to tell. sad to see one of the most popular anime's about about black woman and it's just pain pain pain. as much as i love this show, it is proof that so many non black people don't see black people outside of their struggle and hurt.
"we need more competent writers, not black writers" is just a way to say you don't think black people are on average very competent writers. not to mention, everyone deserves to write "poorly" lmfao. people of any skill level or popularity must be given the same chances and yt people to try and fail and try again and learn. great analysis you are so eloquent in your writing!
Funny how she’s the oldest Disney princess along with Cinderella. Then again, people in the 1920’s worked and sustained themselves from a very young age compared to day.
@harriyanna hook I feel like this also ties into the adultifcation bias trend. There is a sheer difference in how Cinderella and Tiana are written. And nobody mistakes Cinderella for being older than 19. Some even think she’s younger. Hmmm. I wonder why. *glares at writing*
@@imthebossmermaid3648 omg you're so right! I wonder if writers were aware of this, or if Tiana was just subconsciously written this way. Because you take a look at literally every other princess like Ariel, Snow white, Cinderella, etc., they're all minors. As a kid I thought all the princesses were adults, but now that I'm older, I can definitely see the difference between Tiana and the others
“This movie just kept jumping all over the place” heh I see what you did there. 🐸 But yes. I agree. It is super painful to see the strong Black woman trope all over the place. It’s as if these writers think that the only way Black women can have a storyline is through suffering and being strong and pushing through it. Why do we have to constantly suffer the most all the time? And the other thing with Dolores is that I’m sick of the fandom always making her suffer so much as well. Even more so than the movie does. Some even villainize her ad well, saying that she is going insane because of her gift because of all the noise and wants to destroy the candle and the miracle and make everyone powerless. Literally what. And that’s not the only example but I’m tired so let’s stop here. Even worse for Tiana is when people say “I want a sequel where Charlotte gets her prince/ss” WHAT. NO. You all want white women to take over Black women’s stories way too much. How about a sequel where we see more of Tiana and Naveen’s story? How about we see a story about Tiana’s restaurant thriving, her getting to have fun and party and relax with friends, and her bonding with her mother? Or a flashback to Tiana’s childhood? Black women seldom get their fairytale and this movie couldn’t even give us that barely but you want to make it all about Charlotte’s happily ever after. And yes Charlotte deserves her happily ever after as well. BUT you all are reinforcing the stereotype that white women get to be the fancy and delicate and glittering princesses while Black women have to work like mules. You don’t care about Tiana or Black female representation. You only care about Charlotte and having yet another doll-faced white blonde American sweetheart princess. And it’s so sickening. Tiana deserved better. So did Dolores, and Penny Rolling(they see me rolling, they hating…), and Michiko, and the rest. I love how honest you are in your videos harri. Good job. You tell it like it is girl! I’m proud of you! 👋🏾
Twitter is Hell on Earth, even before E.M. bought it, but it has exposed to horror stories told by black women that I would've never otherwise seen. The "Strong Black Woman" trope is very problematic. Several of those horror stories were about their health concerns being ignored and/or downplayed. A few of them nearly *died* because of that! 😒
@@yeeeeeeeeeeeeeee_ya5786 Yeah, I always thought of Alma as being more of an overly-strict pragmatist who is of the mind that if you are not useful, you are just dead weight until we marry you off and pop out some kids who will be useful, its part of why Luisa's song is all about how people only view her as useful because she's very physically strong and if she didn't have it, she would be worthless which in turn is why when the Encanto's magic starts to fade, she's freaking out the most.
@@yeeeeeeeeeeeeeee_ya5786 Hello I am a child of the 90s and 00s where you don't gotta be big to be fat shamed. I say because Isa is more slender and fan artists (who consulted the Art of Encanto) note Dolores and especially Mirabel as hippier while Luisa is declared plus size rep by plus sized folks.
@@KhaosAdmiral yea I’m not really seeing Alma being colorist or fatphobic. She more just cares about how your gift and how it can help the community. But Hari can at least put up a side that I can understand about colorism . But FATPHOBIC ?? Where did that come from ?
I was just wondering what your full thoughts on The Princess and the Frog were. I had a feeling there were some things in that movie that wouldn't really hold up on close examination, but do you think it's at least good overall, or do the cons outweigh the pros?
Okay I watched it today and...it really is not? Like, admittedly it does seem like that at first(no spoilers) but it is a bit justified with her past and her feeling like she needs to be super tough and not make friends because she'll only hurt them. But over time she warms up and learns to develop friends, such as Raul and Siobhan, and not hold herself emotionally hostage...so if anything I would say it is a critique and outright defiance of this trope. 🙂
To be fair I did notice Isabela holding Dolores hand during Antonio’s magical gift ceremony. Some people like myself might see this having a bond that is more like sisters than cousins. I grew with a single mom, as such I spent a lot time with my aunt and older cousins to the point where I thought of them as my sisters.
I don't mean to diminish your overall point, but I'd like to defend Tiana a bit. There were definite plot problems with her film, but something I've always appreciated about her is that she's the only Disney princess to be self-driven. The others only acted because their lives were in danger from stepmothers/witches/vizier/the Hun army/etc, but Tiana chose a goal for herself and followed it of her own initiative. Instead of making more princesses like that, Disney went into making ditzes. She was an interesting contrast to the others, completely irrelevant of her race. I agree with you that she needed a better film -- this movie was a hot mess in terms of plot and the villains knowing what they wanted. And the prince honestly sucked. I don't agree that Tiana "suffered in silence" due to her reaction to those corrupt real estate agents. She literally got turned into a frog the same night that it happened -- she didn't have much time to react to her situation at all.
While I applaud people for trying to add racial representation, I get tired of seeing the two same tropes used over and over again. Most black women I see portrayed in media either are the kind who suffer, getting no happy ending OR fall into the "strong black woman" trope you mentioned. This is why I've decided I'm gonna make my original series protagonist biracial (she'll be two fictional races, but I want her character design to look part black) and I'm gonna have her be more of a perky character. Also I'm gonna ask for feedback from black friends on her later on. Lastly, if it ever was good enough to get turned into a series of some kind, I would make SURE I had black women on board to make creative decisions and I would keep the cast from being white washed. >.>
Speaking of LGBT representation in Miraculous Ladybug I would like to see more Rose and Juleka. I know they're not main characters, but in my opinion from what we have seen they have the healthiest dynamic and balance each other out. And yes, the strong black women trope can be harmful. Don't get me wrong. When written well I love seeing a strong black woman. However they also need to have moments of being emotionally vulnerable. At the end of the day no matter how strong we may seem, we're still human. I'd also like to see more black characters (both men and women) have more of a shy or soft personalities from time to time. Yes some of us are loud and out there, but not all of us. Just like any other group of people we have a wide range of personalities
dolores never had to be a strong “black woman” she’s also a mixed race latina .. so this wouldn’t even be representation for black women to complain about???
You both have a point HOWEVER as the only woman of African descent in her family it is definitely valid to discuss misogynoir regarding her plot. Yes she is only half-Black, however, she is the closest to representation for Black women in this movie that we have, which is on its own upsetting because all the Black women in this movie with dark skin and beautiful 4C hair that weren’t mixed were background characters and not part of the Madrigal family. But at the end of the day, Alma still favored her non-Black side of the family over the Black side, and placed Dolores in Isabela’s shadow even if she didn’t mean to sideline her, and she’s also sidelined by the family on a whole. In fact the entire Black side of the family minus the parents are, especially Camilo. So yes, Dolores does deserve a place in this video, and it is important to discuss how the Strong Black Woman trope affects her even if she is mixed. Because even if the writers didn’t mean to, she is still a half-Black girl written by white writers.
@@imthebossmermaid3648 wait but didn’t abuela place everyone in Isabella’s shadow? Wasn’t the point that Mirabel was neglected by Alma too? Not just the black side of the family.
The actress Kerry Washington said in an interview, that she loved playing the character Brunhilda in the movie Django unchained specifically because she got to play as the soft, sweet damsel in distress who was rescued by the man who loved her as much as she did him. Sounds ridiculous that playing a maiden in need of hero's rescue was liberating but that specific archetype has been denied to black women for so long.
The strong black woman trope only affects monoracial, unambiguous looking black women. Therefore it is not wrong to focus specifically on monoracial black women when talking about the "strong black women" trope. Acknowledging that biracial women mixed with black are different from black women although we share some similarities is NOT erasing their blackness but giving a full picture of their heritage. It's also ironic how you say you think it's wrong to "erase their black side" and in the next breath you erase their other side. Make it make sense.
At this point after listening to the whole video, I just assume now that anything none immediately positive about a black female character is just assumed to be racism

I understand your channel is mostly about cartoons and kid shows, and you like to speak on politics but don’t just grab every show/movie and make up something to complain about. Maybe you just need to venture out to actual movies/shows that actual have the problems you want to talk about, because this is not it. Also, let’s stop with the one drop rule.
its not "making something up" its watching media with a critical eye. just because its cartoons/shows for kids doesnt mean you should passively consume them without thinking critically about what's happening on screen. especially since children are very impressionable.
@Meep moop Thank you. I’m sick of people saying that “why are you making everything about race/gender/sexuality?!” Because it really does affect anything and everything. It bleeds into our society. You might not see it, but others do.
i get your point about dolores. i think it's a really interesting take i hadn't considered before. i love encanto, but the writers were WHITE!!!! which i found issue with even before i saw the movie...as well as the fact that mr miranda was there, him being antiblack! writers did their research, but it's such a disservice to dolores (and the story lmao) that she couldn't get much time. i get she's a side character, but if u look at the reason why she was a side character..... my hope (stupid as that is) is that IF there's more encanto things coming out, there will be more colombian writers. specifically afro colombian writers. Hell, just afro latino writers! please, everyone wants the warm color family content. i know one of the writers (jared bush) said dolores is his favorite, but idk if he can do her service... ...also. not to hate. your pronunciation of the spanish names was so distracting, i'm sorryyy. en-CAN-toe. do-lore-res. isah-belluh. all-muh. lucia 😭Juliet-a. fee-lix. it caught me off guard, and i kinda wish you looked up the actual pronunciations of their names, especially since it's in-movie. other than that, rlly loved this video! love hearing things i hadn't though of before, hate the fact that antiblackness is rampant in literally *everything*
first of all this was an amazing video omg. but this is my take on delores. im positive that delores wanting MARIANO specifically. she may have wanted him before he and isa even got engaged. the whole shadow of isa thing is SO apparent and id love to get into that, i go on and on and on.BUT ANYWAY YA. she didnt just want anybody she wanted mariano. 1. bc we see how bruno profisized to her saying “he told me that the man of dreams would be just out of reach, betrothed to another.” so yes. he is the man of her dreams.she also spoke abt hearing him and the things he did and stuff in one of the songs. basically explaining what she liked abt him. im sure other men in the town probably would have wanted her hand. but she specifically wanted him. HOWEVERR. it is extremely appearent with the favortism as how isa and her are the SAME age yet abuela is specifically only focused on marriage with.. isa? not seeming to even CARE abt delores getting married or even ENGAGED at all when she is exactly at that age. and then wanting mariano to be with isa so bad when delores was there, it was just a GIVEN to alma. im positive it didnt even cross her mind that delores was even an option. just a a given like oh of COURSE the best man in the town should go to isa. rmb. delores knew isa and mariano werent in love. she can hear all. and the engagement and marriage was very much not for love and extremely planned. it wasnt oh thats my besties boyfriend bc they werent in love and alma planned it. mariano just wanted ANYONE to love and isa didnt like him at all and the entire reason they were engaged is BECAUSE alma knew he was the most prestigious son of isa’s age. so she blindly decided that he belonged to isa. despite not even consulting ISA abt it and DEFINITELY not delores abt it. nobody asked isa what she wanted bc she was perfect and everyone loved her, but nobody asked delores what she wanted bc she was forgotten. which, to me, is worse.
Because Isabela is older, and in those cultures, you marry the oldest daughter off first. Marrying Dolores off to Mariano while Isabela is still unmarried would be considered an insult to Isabela.
currently have an everything half off sale for my store! everything but the books (yes you can still use the 30% off code for those) is 50% off this weekend!
also, i would like to make a note about my ending thoughts. i think it is important for white writers, and writers in general to write for all kinds of people, but it has become frustrated how so many works about people of color are NOT created by people of color. it's gotten frustrating because like i said "that is not your story to tell" and it feels a bit like puppetry because too many stories that focus on poc are written by white people, and it's sad how the stories (which is not alot compared to this) focused on poc written by poc get overlooked.
also i said what i needed to say about dolores in the disclaimer and in her section of the video I'm not going back and forth with anyone about it.
you are AMAZING, harri!!! i hope you have an wonderful rest of your day. thank you for everything that you do. we love you so much

But here being nice like they didn't know trama would make you weaker
reminds me of a post i saw once that said "i didn't need to be strong, i needed to be safe" and honestly i think more people need to know that
@@harriyanna Seriously. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who saw it. Like, Tiana’s the main character y’all. No one is shitting on Charlotte.
Wow. I wish you well after so much trauma. 💗💐
I'll keep you in my prayers 🙏
I'm not afraid of white women but u are right their tears is a threat. I had this old manager lady above me lie and had me come to work knowing I wouldn't be able to prove I did the hrs. I cussed her out through text cuz she had the audacity to say that I am bad for leaving the job (with those patients in need) and called the cops on me over the fact that I cussed her out. The cops are till this day guarding that building from me
@@annabelconstantine1241 Same, and that's so sad. Both you and the OP, I hope you get better and find justice, though.
@@imthebossmermaid3648 thanks.😊 Also what does op mean 😳
I do think that another reason that Alma preferred Isabela to Dolores, is that Isabela looks like Alma. Alma is probably living vicariously Isabela.
I’m so tired of this trope. Black women internalize it and it worsens stressed based health outcomes.
exactly.
Encanto needs a series that has an episode that focuses on each character and episodes that focuses on different characters’ relationships.
Hopefully, we'll get that in the future.
@I Don’t Get Paid Enough For This I honestly think Disney is ignoring how well Encanto as a production did when Feozen got loads of stuff with in a year. Hmmm, I wonder what the difference is, hmm, you money-gobbling machine.
One of Delores' lines in We Don't Talk About Bruno was:
_He told me that the man of my dreams would be just out of reach, betrothed to another_
This implies that Delores already is in love with one person specifically.
It was implied that Mariano didn't like his relationship with Isabella in All Of You:
_Hey Mariano, why so blue?_
_I just have so much love inside_
Then Mirabel introduces Delores, who has previously been keeping quiet until she finally has the chance to spill her secrets and confess.
Huggles, I am so sorry that your humanity, beauty, and vulnerability weren't honored.
I have a hard time forgiving Alma she needs to actually apologize to everyone out loud
This trope and its effects on the medical industry is devastating
THIS PART
Exactly that would’ve been cool to see. It was unintentional but that’s the problem.
Literally.
No one said they can’t be both, but when you only show Black women to be strong 24/7, that’s when it’s dehumanizing
You always need variety
I know that’s what I’m saying 😭. There needs to be a balance instead of one dimension. Didn’t say no one said anything bout it HCK
Hate this trope with a passion lol
Me too. Also nice picrew.
I personally have beef with LMM because he shouldn’t be writing or producing any stories that contain Black characters because he has not got it right, not once.
im so tried of people ignoring this. she showed so little care to the black side of her family and people just brush it off.

Dark Skinned women in particular seem to suffer from this stereotype/trope the most in the media. They're often portrayed as warrior types and more masculine than that of a lighter skinned woman which is just odd to me.

@@nikkiralaniakea9527 Ohhh I see!
"The more European the better"
And is so sad... how deep this system was, that we are still thinking like this even though it was a long time ago.

I hate the trope so much and as a writer I never wanna have my black characters or other POCs highlighted in a negative light, because enough is enough period!
I keep this trope in mind when I’m conceptualizing those characters you see me draw on my Twitter all the time.

The video could’ve been made with only Tiana. It only applies to her, even though most Cinderella’s have hard life’s and have to be “strong” before they find there prince and become a princess. Just look as Cinderella, she was made a slave in her own home.

The fact that you even have to add that disclaimer due to that discourse around Dolores's ethnicity is 🙃🙃🙃
Not to mention people tryna claim that being afro whatever doesn't mean you're black?

I’m sorry but I just looked up Elena and why would you make me see that 😭 I could do without witnessing something like this…I like Olivia tho.
I'm not a fan of Tyler Perry. He enforces stereotypes. I will take Spike Lee. He is thought provoking.
Whew, this is gonna be deep. I'll post my thoughts after watching this video.
(UPDATE *I watched the video*) -- my thoughts:
I'll say that this strong black woman trope needs expanding and more nuance in popular mainstream media.
Michiko and Hatchin Spoilers
I loved Michiko and Hatchin when I was in middle school.

GORGEOUS.
Tiana was HOW old???
YES. SHE WAS THAT YOUNG. babygirl needed a break.
@@imthebossmermaid3648 you should also consider the time period Cinderella’s movie came out.
I suppose Dolores whispered during "we don't talk about Bruno" because she didn't want to get into trouble for what she said that she heard.
As a black woman ❤❤❤ i have problems with colorism too in shows like the lighter black person towards the darker skin woman gets treated differently
Wait, people were questioning Dolores' blackness?
Yeah
“This movie just kept jumping all over the place” heh I see what you did there. 🐸
But yes.

I was with you until you said "And the prince honestly sucked." 😩
THATS RIGHT FWEN MUWAHHHH 💋
FINALLY, somebody talks about TIANA!
dolores never had to be a strong “black woman” she’s also a mixed race latina .. so this wouldn’t even be representation for black women to complain about???
i really wish people would stop applying the one drop rule and categorizing biracials as black
??? Her dad is clearly black. So she is as well, as she’s mixed.
Her daddy is black, that makes her black too💀
@@imthebossmermaid3648 wait but didn’t abuela place everyone in Isabella’s shadow? Wasn’t the point that Mirabel was neglected by Alma too? Not just the black side of the family.

Are you talking about Dolores madrigal being included in the video?
Because I agree with you but she can still fit the trope as this video shows, that's why she was included and that's why there was the disclaimer.
At this point after listening to the whole video, I just assume now that anything none immediately positive about a black female character is just assumed to be racism

she is afro latina…AFRO latina ☠️☠️
she is both black and latina pointing out the fact that she is a black woman does not erase her latina identity
I always thought she was Black, though. Black Latina
Afro-latina
@@joblesstuesday3295 Yeah, exactly
@@thorpeaaron1110 it will affect them through on how they see different type of people
Then don’t watch her videos
Wow this is boring
i get your point about dolores. i think it's a really interesting take i hadn't considered before. i love encanto, but the writers were WHITE!!!! which i found issue with even before i saw the movie...as well as the fact that mr miranda was there, him being antiblack! writers did their research, but it's such a disservice to dolores (and the story lmao) that she couldn't get much time. i get she's a side character, but if u look at the reason why she was a side character.....
my hope (stupid as that is) is that IF there's more encanto things coming out, there will be more colombian writers. specifically afro colombian writers.
