One of my favorite movies of all time. I wish the uncensored version was available; There are a few blatant cuts in the Minnie The Moocher number in the extant prints, and I've heard 20 minutes worth of other bits were cut out of other scenes. Even in its edited form, it's still one of the funniest movies of all time, at least to me.
I hadn't seen this W&W before, and I'm impressed by the production values. And it's got a couple good tunes courtesy of Kahn & Ruby to boot. Glad not all of the risque lines were cut, and I particularly loved the STRANGE INTERLUDE gag. Thanks for the upload!
The Government censors forced about 40% of this movie to be cut. I would pay real money to see the original version. This is my favorite Wheeler and Woolsey film. The jungle girl is 110° in the shade. The version on DVD is about 10 minutes longer than what is being shown here.
I read the original Variety review for this film - which wasn't kind - however they state in that review that the original length at its premiere was 90 minutes. I'd love to know if that version is sitting somewhere in the Columbia vault...
No legitimate DVD release of this. No version floating around bootleg circles that is longer than this. The original runtime of the film when submitted to the state censor boards was 69 minutes, so there wouldn't be a final cut that's 10 minutes longer even if Sony did restore it. At most, it would be about 7 or 8 minutes longer, since they pulled a couple bits off the cutting room floor, while making the reams of cuts to appease New York, that I think added up to about 4 minutes tops.
So glad you uploaded this one. One of my favorites. It was on YT for awhile but disappeared. The others are still on YT. Half Shot Sunrise, Dixiana, Cracked Nuts, Hook Line and Sinker, and So This is Africa. I have most on DVDs, My wife and I love these guys and Dorothy Lee.❤️👍
Glad to finally get to see this entirely. Raquel and Esther and that last musical bit is great! This is now one my two fave W/W films along with 'Half Shot......' and I love Edna May and Dorothy Lee. Wish someone would find 'Convention City' also someday!
Definitely one of the best Wheeler and Woolsey films I've seen. Makes me wish they made more at Columbia and less at RKO. Nothing against Dorothy Lee, but nice to see the boys in a straight comedy for once. A definite pre-code flavor to this one. By the way, that stock footage shot of the street below when they're on the building ledge had to have been used in a million Stooge shorts. Thanks so much for posting this Geno!
Thank you so much for uploading this film ! Now it is the only Wheeler & Woolsey still not released on DVD. So many gems are gathering dust in the Columbia/Sony vaults. Take for instance the serial "The Great Adventures Of Captain Kidd". A single episode was released in 2008 on DVD in the "Icons Of Adventure" Hammer films set. The copy was pristine ! Sony if you are reading me, please release you serials !
It was edited in a few places due to risque humor. There are several websites that have actual letters and memos explaining what was cut and why (it's a lot of stuff that these days, wouldn't be considered all that racy, but back then, it was).
Yes, the edits are crudely obvious. A bit of a jarring effect. Robert Woolsey when cracking the native woman's necklace of nuts does get off a quick, throw-away line: "Nice t_ts" Rather remarkable that stayed in post '34. The white haired businessman at beginning looks and sounds familiar. It's of course the corrupt banker from "Stagecoach" with Claire Trevor and John Wayne. Thanks for posting. I surely had fun. My third viewing in 30 years.
These guys are so fantastic! I’ve probably seen this film 8 or 9 times and it’s still an hilarious treat every time. This along with, Dixiana and Half Shot At Sunrise are the only surviving footage that I’ve seen. Anyone know of any others out there? Please say there’s more!!
Thanks to Geno's House of Rare Sitcoms for bringing us this rare comedy classic . It's almost regarded as a "lost" film, because it has so rarely been seen. It was one of the first films after 1933's "Baby Face" to fall prey to the Hollywood Production code. (How the "t_i_ts" line survived in this copy is a surprise!) There has been attempts to license this film for the home market, but the powers-that-be simply are not interested & if Sony can't make money with the likes of the 3 stooges, Wheeler & Woolsey or some of the other long unseen comedy shorts they are hoarding away..then maybe they are in the wrong business!
That line isn't necessarily heard as you & I hear it. Some viewers think that Woolsey says, "Nice kids, too." Puzzling: nowhere in the 83-page "censorship" file on STIA is this line mentioned. If it's in fact a comment on the "native" girl's anatomy, OR if it's an innocent line that could be mis-heard as that, you'd expect to find a note on that in communications contained in this file.
Thanks for the upload Geno, i rather enjoyed that nonsense. The stuff at the beginning about jungle pictures being all the rage reminded me of the Abbot and Costello film AFRICA SCREAMS in which they work in the jungle book department of a store. Not a section or some shelves, a whole department! Look for the W&W triple-bill Geno Cuddy challenge edition of MMW sometime in mid-July.
One of the other references Woolsey makes is when he says, "Africa Speaks". That was a popular documentary movie that came out a few years earlier. I'd even go as far as to say this movie is somewhat of a parody of it, given the same theme of making a movie on location in Africa. Part of the footage, at least some part of the locust invasion, was in 'Africa Speaks'.
Considering how much early film is lost or hard to find, maybe people will find some solace in reading the comics. This includes W&W in Double Turn, A Fortune-Ate Affair and Horseplay, & stories featuring L&H, Harold Lloyd, etc. comicbookplus.com/?dlid=59029
My Wheeler-Woolsey collection is complete except for The Rainmakers, 1935 (and yes I've searched rare/obscure DVD's etc). Any chance you could upload this (...copyright infringement, i could care less....)? Thank ye.
I'm now going to commit a sin I do not like wheeler and Woolsey I think they're not funny and so many people just love them I'm going to watch this movie even if it kills me and it probably will my favorite so far is Mrs I may return with more comments later if I'm able to. well it wasn't that bad

Thank you for posting this, please post as much Wheeler and Woolsey as you can.
Seeing as the rest of the library has been released, this will be my one and only W&W posting. Thank you for stopping by.
My second Wheeler and Woolsey film in a week hope i can find some more thanks for posting.
Didn't expect much but man these guys are hilarious. I'm impressed.👏🏾👏🏾

It’s on dvd on eBay as far as last week.
All of their movies are on DVD but you have to "dig".
This is very funny.
Never heard of this classic before or this incredible talented double act.
Love this.
Thank you for upload!
I think Peach-O-Reno could be my fav
but this is a close second. Aah they
all great.👍
“Your grandfather died when he was a baby? You’re a little tired”. 🤣 can you imagine a movie of the Marx Bro’s. & Wheeler/Woolsey together?
I'd love to see the uncensored version. It looks as if a few places were edited due to risqué humor. Thanks for uploading this!
EVERYONE would but it was the FIRST U.S. movie to be censored.

This is the best Wheeler and Woolsey I have seen.
They should be ranked with the Marx Brothers and other comic greats of the period.
Agreed Jay, thanks. - Geno Cuddy.
I agree with this statement. I was going to say the same thing, but I see you have already said it. Accurate.
I rank Diplomaniacs up there with Duck Soup.
They should be ranked way below the Marx Brothers. No comparison. The Marx Brothers are wayyyyyy better.
Thanks for the upload. I've often heard o f this movie but could never find it.

All of their film survive and have been released on DVD, except this one.

@@GenosHouseofRareFilms Yes, sorry about that.. I have to shoot you a message!!
It’s available on eBay as of last week. Dvd.

Nice movie
I think that Bob Woolsey's checked suit was appropriated by Harold Lloyd for THE SIN OF HAROLD DIDDLEBOCK. It took courage to wear THAT!
Looks like a Spike Jones' costume.
The huge mosquito is like something out of a Charley Bowers short.
Eddie Clayton plays the elevator operator.
These guys were REALLY funny!

sucj a treat thank you
Please do "Diplomaniacs" next!!
Already on DVD, will not be posting here.
@@GenosHouseofRareFilms I'm new to Wheeler & Woolsey and was not aware of this. Horribly sorry.

THE RAINMAKERS should be available on Amazon.com. I don't upload films that have gotten DVD releases.
