    READ ME:
Forgot about Fury Attack (Disturbed Stab), it's in my notes about the multi-hit moves and I straight up forgot.
Horn Drill is called "not applicable" as opposed to denied because it's technically a piercing move, but will not get any benefit out of this specific ability. It is a "spearing move" but will not get a damage boost. If there is a "spearing move" negation ability, it will negate Horn Drill.
Also, as expected, RUclips's automation is not very happy about a video related to "piercing thrusts". Hence why even the title and thumbnail use the placeholder name.
I avoided using obvious words like "stabbing" and "impaling" too much, and I haven't gotten in trouble luckily. However, some of your comments are being blocked or held for review automatically for saying words related to this ability.
I'm trying to unblock all the comments that are getting marked as inappropriate. So, if you dont see your comment for a while, that is the reason why.
    Thank you!

Fury Attack probably should be the exception to the multi-hit moves rule for the "Piercer" ability. Mainly to give it at least something distinct compared to other multi-hit normal attacks like Comet Punch, Tail Slap, Barrage, Double Slap, Fury Swipe, and Spike Cannon. Also it has nice synergy with early-game Spearow since Fury Attack is the first normal stab move Spearow learns through level-up, which gives Spearow a reason to use it over other early game birds.

Honestly I do think that Spearhead works best for the name, probably やりさきin Japanese for it, but it’s not really easy. If you want to go for something deriving from the adjective 鋭い probably 鋭利 えいり or 鋭敏 えいびん is likely the best to use for the idea of it being “pointy” or “piercing”.

On the other hand, "Lancer" as a katakana loan word could be good. The meaning of the word can refer to a spearman literally, but it also has a literary basis in heroic yet edgy fighters. Originating in popularity from Lancelot of King Arthur fame.
As the story is famous in many regions it's a fitting option, and can properly convey the meaning as well. It also fits well for the type of pokemon that could have the ability.

Not including Icicle Spear makes less sense than Pin Missile, imo, and that's coming from someone that would advocate for Pin Missile. You are launching icicles which are clearly spear-like objects and are likely to impale through their target (provided they don't break, of course). It also gives Piercer a skill-link move, which I also think is an interesting choice you could make - skill link for maximizing hits or piercer for maximizing damage.
I'd also not restrict a move simply because the Pokemon of that type don't currently match it. Should leave some room for future design, too.
That's just my two cents though, people are gonna disagree on things like this all the time lol

I do have to disagree with Pin Missile, Icicle Spear, Spike Cannon, and Barb Barrage cuz you can have a Pokemon with Loaded Dice + Spearhead is practically the same as a Pokemon with Choice Band / Life Orb + Skill Link. Also it's not unprecedented that a move can be in 2 subcategory:
      - Drain Punch: draining/healing & punching
      - Comet Punch: variable multi-strike & punching (Loaded Dice + Iron Fist goes brrrrrrrrr)
      - Heal Pulse: healing & pulse (duh)

    • @CammyMeeleTea
      @CammyMeeleTea  Месяц назад +2

Believe me, I get your sentiment. I wouldn't have brought them up if I hadn't thoroughly considered them. I adore Ice-types and would have loved to actually use Piercer + Icicle Spear + Loaded Dice/Life Orb. And given that so many Ice moves are based on Icicles, which are basically spears and lances, it just felt like I'd be able to walk away with more than just Glacial Lance, you know? I was all set to slap this ability on Weavile and make it broken again, but imagine my shock that most of these "Icicle" moves just aren't performed that "spearing" way. I approached this script originally with a bias towards making it work or justifying it, but the more I read and researched, the more I realized that I was forcing it, and needed to actually be stricter. Otherwise, I'd just cause more inconsistencies, especially in localization. So this went from a "cool ability that Weavile and the icicle bros can spam" to "cool spearfighter ability for bugs, fish, birds, and bees."
So here's the new philosophy I adopted after reading the descriptions, reviewing animation in game and in the anime, as well as comparing the manga representation and spin-offs:
My argument isn't that "a move can't be in multiple categories". It's that "the method determines the category".
The deciding factor for Horn Leech was that the game description specifies a horn thrust that makes contact. If the move were performed like in the anime, where it is a magic, contactless, HP drain, it would be instantly disqualified.
Similarly, I'd easily add Fury Attack, even though it's a multi hit, even if I could reasonably conclude it counted. For example, if the Japanese name and descriptions specified spearing type actions, that'd be included. Or if the animation and distribution was limited to things that would rapidly spear the opponent with horns, beaks, stingers, etc.
The method of those ranged, denied moves are more like a spray or machine gunning of needles and spikes, than it is a piercing or spearing thrust. Icicle Spear's name does the heavy lifting here, as it could just as easily have been localized as "Icicle Shot" or "Icicle Cannon" without affecting how the move works at all. Glacial Lance is more like what a spearfighter does. Plus adding all pointy projectiles opens up the floodgates for arrows and like Decidueye's moves, and other things like that.
Me bringing up Skill Link and Loaded Dice is a consolation as in: "I'm not including these as Piercer moves, but at least y'all have Skill Link and Loaded Dice as options for those moves." They've got an ability and item to boost them already, so I can deprioritize them and think about them later.
Spearfishing and javelin tossing is simply different than gunning, crossbows, and archery. It may sound tempting to stack as much as possible into an ability, but splitting up a classification can actually leave room for more diversity. Disqualifying them leaves room for abilities that are specifically needle or projectile based. It's like how Rock and Ground could be consolidated into "Earth" or Water and Ice could be combined into "Water", but splitting them up into specifics actually makes more variety.
Sorry for the confusion. I did word it oddly to get around the explicitness of talking about stabbing and impaling for the whole video.

Can I just say, I love these kind of theorycrafting & game mechanic deep dive videos! It's probably the aspect of the pokémon series that interests me the most so I appreciate you delivering on that niche.
Quite a few of the attacks you mentioned are ones I'd considered for a hypothetical ability that boosts horn & headbutt attacks. I know moves can overlap categories (Clangorous Soul both dance and sound based, Aura Sphere both mega launcher-boosted and bulletproof-protected) - but this grouping of piercing/stabbing/lancing sounds a much smarter way to distinguish them and has that important clarity.

Maybe "Fine Point" could work. It's a pointed part of a Pokemon's body obviously, while also implying a level of dignity and precision due to what "fine point" means in English. They've done puns in Pokemon plenty. Look at Gorilla Tactics for example. There's like a different pun in each language. Though something like "Lancer" is very self-explanatory.
Even though Horn Drill wouldn't have its damage boosted by the Ability, I'd say it should still be classed as a piercing move for consistancy's sake. Roar may not have any interaction with Punk Rock, but it still interacts with Soundproof or a Throat Spray. Also doing so is something Game Freak does regardless. Sandstorm is considered a wind move despite it not interacting with Wind Power / Rider.

Strong jaw makes the elemental bites actually somewhat decent with a strong enough Pokemon. They somewhat help the really weak moves like the bites, though I typically prefer tough claws for the generic boost to all physical attacks, but something like this that would boost moves that get in the 80-120 power range would be really nice. 8:24 I think the move should still get the "piercing" flag, even if the ability doesn't do anything. Similar to how in Gen 9, the move Sandstorm has the "wind" flag but neither of the abilities that interact with that flag do anything when Sandstorm starts.
The way I see it, the flag could be used in multiple ways. What if there's a later ability called, say, Padded Shield, that specifically makes the user immune to these moves a la Soundproof, Bulletproof, Wind Rider? In that case, it makes sense to have Horn Drill in the list of piercing moves, as now Padded Shield mons are completely immune to even the chance of OHKO.
9:40 While your other argument for denying this move is valid, I don't think "this move is only learned by mons I don't think will get this ability" is a valid reason to ignore giving it the flag. Origin Pulse has the "aura/pulse" flag that procs on Mega Launcher despite only being learned by Kyogre, who doesn't get the ability.
And while I'm thinking of Mega Launcher, a fun fact is that it boosts the healing power of Heal Pulse! In a similar vein, if there was a healing move based on giving the target a vaccine or other medical shot, I think this jabbing ability should boost that move's healing power.
14:28 oh you directly bring up the Origin Pulse Mega Launcher thing

I'm also a bit surprised you only used the "debatable" ruling once. There were many times I was so sure you'd leave moves in "debatable" status only to confidently settle into either allowing or rejecting them.
For instance, Pin Missile I thought would be debatable, but then you just axed it without doubt lol. This also made me think that anything ranged would be out of the question, before realizing with the other moves that it was more like "if it's ranged, it has to be like a javelin throw, not a missile launch or a 'spawn stuff in thin air' thing".

I think part of the trouble with naming an ability like this is that it's kind of pulling double duty in terms of what it describes physically. Drilling attacks and horn attacks rely on a hard point thrust with great strength (which I might call something like "hardened point"), while other piercing moves like Poison Jab or Fell Stinger seem to rely on sharp needles applied with precision (which I might call "sharpened point" or "needle point"). You could try splitting them up to make it feel more flavorful, if you don't mind having a little redundancy.

So Barb Barrage, Pin Missile, Icicle Spear, etc. Boosted by Pinpoint since the projectiles are basically pinpoints, and landing the attacks with pinpoint accuracy would increase the damage.

Maybe this isn't the Piercing ability that I wanted since I would give it some defense negation or it negates your initial defense buff regardless of what it is but doesn't neg past it. So if you simple Cotton Guard and get to + 6 to them you're + 0 but if you Iron Defense twice then the first one won't matter and the second one will.
Or maybe like instead it bypasses 25-30-50% of the Defense.
However depending on the multiplier maybe it might be best to just do something like that and then No effect moves gain that same boost in a chance to break Screens.
I don't care Sucker Punch/Surprise Attack is too much of like a possible punch and thus if I ever made a game I'm the kind of person who would classify it as a punch and a kick or a punch and a swing or anything else that could be like no affiliated attack type if I ever made an ability that boosted or countered those.
This is my simple comment going over every move you talk about and maybe some you don't might happen later if I have the time.
Stone Edge is maybe low-key for censor some of these moves in the Anime are either expanded upon or they could look WAY more cruel but of course kid friendly this ain't the Manga and even the Manga might not always go that deep after the 1st.
One thing is like Gastly can learn Ice Punch or such and so for some of the moves that might feel they have a sharp feel to them but then the most random of mons get them might be related to some energy or motion they can make to re-create the move with the same power to a degree.
What about the future and possibilities?
    MY BOY GROUDON!
    LETS GO!
One of these days I hope we get a Gimmick Team/Double Battle it would probably be stronger in Doubles due to having both mons. Where like one Mon with a special thing shares their ability and maybe a move with the other mon in your team.
    A connection region.
Maybe Overquil would just get a new move that's affected by the ability Cooling Toxins or something where it replaces it's ability after using the move this could work with all of it's abilities since imagine Swift Swimming then on the final turn of rain using the move whether you use some switch gimmicks as a Band or just have a Lorb, Type Boosting Item, Attack Category Boosting Item, or something else.
    Bagua!
    =
I like the idea of some Jizo like moves I always think of Jiraiya working maybe if they seem focused I wonder if you were avoiding Multi-hit moves as I feel besides Technician which buffs mostly all of those some abilities are fine with buffing them AKA the only one we kinda have that has them since we don't have a Kicking ability that would boost Double or Triple Kick or Axle. (Triple Kick should gain the same power as Axle BTW) Since Comet Punch gets boosted and Surging Strikes along with Double Iron Bash showing that it might not be a thing of the multi hits it's just unlikely.
Hm I see Pinned comment Horn Drill thing.
I Negation ability would be fun.

I like that idea, but then it kind of directly competes with Sound moves and Infiltrator ability for going around Substitute or Brick Break and Psychic Fangs for breaking Screens/Veil.

@@CammyMeeleTea I say it dosent conflcit with sound moves, because sounds bypass substitute without breaking - Peircing can just break the sub, without damaging the foe that turn. I think Brick Break and Psychic Fangs breaking screen is Gamefreak stumbling on the concept, and there's no reason we can expand that out.
What would compete directly with pre-existing categories is giving piercing moves a high crit chance - because that is what most slashing moves already do.

For example, there’s already Pokémon that have technician with loaded dice to take a vantage of and a 50% boost to a piercing move, is not enough to win someone over to used this ability. I also wish you at this to your ability but it might make it broken, by added affect an pseudo infiltrator but hits with 25/50% maximum power or ignores the opponents defensive stats boost.

Disagree about pin missile. It’s definitely a piercing move. Anything that damages via a tiny surface area is piercing and should count. (This also goes for similar moves).
Poison tail, on the other hand, I’d argue would never have been stabbing. Seviper’s tail is shaped more like a glaive than a spear. Even if it’s depicted stabbing in the anime, that’s kinda dumb. It’s clearly designed to slash, and slashing isn’t piercing. So basically… yeah it’s confidently not a piercing move.
Generally, arguing a move “wouldnt be learned by Pokémon with this ability” just doesn’t fly. Plenty of boosting abilities empower moves that none of the ability users learn. It’s about consistently defining what moves would be affected for future reference, metronome shenanigans etc. You should still be considering moves regardless of whether it’s likely to actually occur. Otherwise your reasoning for not doing so could be easily applied to “dexited” moves.

Lancing and spearing types of piercing are different than machine gun sprays and archery. That's a distinction I repeatedly make. Piercing thrusts that a spearfighter would usually make as opposed to literally any move thin enough to break skin.
When doing a spear strike or even a javelin tossing, there is a specific skillset required to thrust and follow through the motion to penetrate the target. Hence why even a Sword stab would count because of the motion and method.
It is not the same skillset and motion as drawing and firing a bow.
It is not the same skillset and motion as spraying a barrage of needles and pins.
It is not the same skill set as shooting a chain gun.
Yes, these things Pierce, but they go against the spirit of the ability.
Furthermore, I'm calling the ability Pierce as a place holder, because as I repeatedly said, RUclips censors the more accurate words related to "stabbing people with spears" if the automation detects the words too frequently.
