Great review and very good playing! I have one question is it better to use this preamp in front of Aguilar Agro (overdrive pedal) or after it?

Active basses sound better to me. My opinion. They just have a pedal like this installed inside a bass. Thanks Andy and by the way you might need to reinforce the floor of your bass room with all the bass cabs and funky vibrations!

Now, is this something that can drive a poweramp, or is this more of a coloring pedal?

I have not tried that, and for sure that is not it's intended purpose, it's a pedal board preamp for signal path tone shaping use primarily. Please visit the Sadowsky website for further information. www.Sadowsky.com

It's for that 1 bass you can't cram an Aguilar, Sadowsky, Bartolini, Audere, etc preamps into. Chain what you like, especially your sweet passive bass that shouldn't be permanently modified.

Yes, that is a good application for sure! also it's great for upright bass, also for any bass that you want to have a nice sounding ultra quiet EQ boost for right on your pedal board, to beef up the signal path gain structure after multi pedal linking, and potential single loss. Or when using back lined amps touring that are kinda lame, just set the amp EQ flat, and run into this for your tone, sit it right on top the amp and leave it on the whole time.

I want to get this pedal so bad, for many years I swore off 2 band EQ bases, I always felt like I would be missing something if I didn't get a 3 or 4 Band preamp, don't get me wrong I love my audere preamp 6z mode on my Jazz bass, and I love the 3 band preamp on my Stingray 5 HH, but I got to be honest, as I'm getting older, I'm getting worn out on having too many options , these days I just want to plug in and go, I want the bass to sound awesome very quickly without adjusting all the knobs constantly like I do on the Audere preamp , I have a lot of equipment with lots of bells and whistles, and I find there could be 100 different options tonely But I will only like 2 most of the time if you know what I mean, I have an Aguilar tone hammer, I have a sansamp pedal, but these days on all of my instruments and preamp pedals, it seems like the tone I am always trying to dial in sounds a lot like this sadowsky pedal, with only two bands on it, go figure?! I feel like I've wasted so much money over the years buying equipment just trying to get close to this tone, it was very simple all along, but I will say I will never get rid of my Stingray 5 that bass sounds awesome, anyway I think I'm going to get this sadowsky pedal and run my jazz bass audere pre flat from now on, and use this outboard preamp instead , thanks for this video I've been thinking about getting a sadowsky preamp pedal for quite some time, and you just made my decision for me.

Robert Lusk I remember Sadowsky ads in Bass Player and maybe Guitar Player magazine a long time ago. I grew up in the SF Bay Area so there were a lot of guys with magic weird electronics crammed into a box for their special super secret stage tone. I remember to arms race of crazy Alembics, I swear they thought filling the body with controls was cool or something in the 70's. I'm looking at these pedals again bc as I get older having a P or J routed out is pointless, bc I know I'll change out the preamp for the next thing. You get tired of things. I never got tired of a really good sounding passive bass bc hot sauce isn't the pork chop, it's just hot sauce. My Stingrays I leave alone, but I have a Warwick $$ I'm tossing alnico Duncan's into this weekend. I just want to sweeten it up, bite is easy to get. I go passive on that bass more often than not, and I'd prefer a bunch of pedals on the floor when I want something different. Think of a rack of sauce at the table, not blasted all over your food before it's dropped in front of you.

dude that's an awesome way of thinking about it, the pedals are the different flavors that you can apply when needed, I like that train of thought, and I totally agree anything from Ernie Ball I do not alter at all , they are always good as is , but yes just like you anything else I'm always wanting to alter it in some way or another, because I get bored, of course I do have ADHD with impulsive disorder, so definitely getting bored is a problem LOL! I will say though I recently switched out my bartolini Classic series pickups in my Deluxe 5-string American Fender Jazz Bass, and put in the new bartolini B axis pickups, oh my gosh what a difference in tone and Clarity and no more Dark tone , but yet they still have a bartolini type of tone in there somewhere , and they are also a lot louder, they are the first pickups I've had in a long time that I'm a hundred percent satisfied with , they sound thick, punchy, loud, and yet very clear, precise, and more treble than Bartolini's usually have which I'm so happy about , but I'm not 100% happy with the audere preamp I've had in it for several years, it has so many choices and yet it feels like it's missing something, I can't quite put my finger on what it is, all I know is I hear other preamps and they have a more Fuller livelier sound , much like this sadowsky preamp, it gives breath to the tone if that makes any sense, I would love to try other built-in preamps on my jazz bass, but there are very few that will fit into the cavity without serious routing , I even recently tried the new smaller bartolini preamp and even it wouldn't fit right, so I'm limited on my options on my 1997 jazz bass, the J retro seems nice but I am not paying that much money especially when some of the reviews are iffy depending on who is giving the review, I will say the audere preamp is very transparent, a little too much for my liking in fact, but I figure now I might as well keep it for all of its total options , and yet I can set it all flat and use the sadowsky pedal.
