    Use the brick as an alarm clock. Simply place one in front of your parent's bedroom door when they go to bed. When they wake up and step out of the room and on to the brick with their bare feet, a loud scream and cursing that ensues should be enough to wake up everyone in the house.

    To me, there are two completely different types of creativity, that I like to call "spontaneous creativity" and "practical creativity".
    Spontaneous creativity is the kind mentioned in this video. It's what allows people to come up with an idea or product with little to no influence. These people are usually artists, musicians, authors, filmmakers, toymakers, or that friend who you always call because you're bored.
    Practical creativity is the kind of person who you'd associate with MacGyver. These kind of people are able to analyze a situation and either make sense of it or make a product out of it in a really novel way. These people are usually engineers, mathematicians, scientific researchers, lawmakers, programmers, or that friend who you call when you need a plan B.
    I find it is very rare for people to be both types. Personally, I consider myself creative, but only the "practical" kind. I have come up with many innovative ideas that have never been done before, and have contributed toward a patent. I find use for things that others find worthless. But when I saw the red brick, I drew a blank. I've actually used a Lego brick just like that one to solve a problem involving a 3D printer, but if you show me an object and say "do something with this", I don't know how to respond to that, because without context, I don't "feel like" creating something out of it. Does that make me not creative? I don't think so.

    • @Kassidar
      @Kassidar 8 лет назад +21

      the other reason we draw a blank is when asked "what can you do with this lego brick" we try to think of uses specific to that lego brick. Answers like "you could put it in a can and make a rattle" are automatically ignored because that has nothing to do with it being a brick, you can put literally any small hard object in a tin can and make a rattle out of it.

      +Peter Schmidt Exactly my thoughts

    • @AogNubJoshh
      @AogNubJoshh 8 лет назад

      +Peter Schmidt I completely agree, I've had this thought too. If I'm asked for a spontaneous novel idea, I'll be pretty lost for ideas. However, in the realms of science and problem solving, I come up with all sorts of ideas. It seems more like cued creativity.. creativity that requires a context and a problem to be solved, rather than spontaneous novelty.

      +ILYES That's how inspiration works. Most every artist for example can list many other people or things that they used or incorporated to do what they do.
      Even the world itself is just a rearrangement of all the same elements that were already there. In the end you can take from that, that everything is creative or truly nothing is.

    I think a big part of creativity is not trying too hard, if nothing comes to mind don't force it out and move onto something else then maybe something will come to mind later, if you view it as something that instantly needs to be tackled you won't come up with anything

    Legos tends to stick together every well, that’s why it would work great in hanging things.
    You can place the Lego on the wall and mount it with glue or adhesive tape. Then put another Lego Piece on an art work or even a hook, it’ll allow what’s being hung to be inter changeable and it can be very convenient without leaving a hole in the wall.

    Sometimes my dreams leave me feeling "mindblowed" when I wake up, that's when I realise how powerful it is, it kinda has it own thoughts, which are "locked up" when I am awakenand taking control, but when I am asleep, it feels like I am it's playtoy.
    I am considered as over-average creative when I am awake, drawings ect... but it's another type of creativity which is created by a blend of consiousness and I have to work to find up new things, and they are still not at the level as those things or thoughts I have in my dreams
    And also I am more creative when I am left on my own for a while...
    And my answer to your question about what to do with the Lego brick. A lots of people tend to lock themselves into the words "Lego" and "brick" and lock their thoughts inside the box of these to terms. I would we can use it for to type of categories, it's form, and it's material, plastick, and do anything with it.

    Creativity means producing some form of art, and it can take planning rather than just 5 seconds. One could argue that the main reason people aren't "creative geniuses" is simply because we don't live in an artistic culture in which art is encouraged or highly regarded and people simply aren't applying themselves to the arts.
    Creativity is often viewed as immature and childish. Most adults and even younger will choose a non-creative activity over a creative one. Not necessarily because they don't want to be creative, but because they feel they shouldn't be indulging in childish activities.
    If you want to be creative then pick up an artistic tool and apply yourself. Otherwise you're just a consumer of other artists entertainment and that doesn't make you creative.

    My friend and I stumbled upon an exactly the same lego piece today while riding the bus, and almost had a little fight over who should keep it (he did). And so, for some reason, I got really spooked when you pulled out that lego out of the blue; in that second it felt so... specific, personal. So trippy.
    Also, I had already been thinking about what I could have done with it, so I guess the 5-second experiment is not valid in my case. Ah, well!

    Joe from "It's Okay to be Smart" proposes using the lego to make a rattle....in the end he limits the lego to only one lego. So, a one lego rattle.....wow...exciting.
    The true meaning or creativity is taking the resources at hand and molding them to either solve a problem, or otherwise enhance your.....(you fill in the blank)
    In the beginning I had a "mobile home". The sliding door had a key hole. It was in the dark at night....BUT there was the street light. Solution: soft metal strip with holes (hardware), plywood octagon, and a mirror. Add a couple of screws, attach to aluminum frame window screw, adjust... and wa-la, a keyhole illuminator!!! No need to leave a porch light on all day. Free and effective. Everybody has their own level of awareness. I see the physical world. I watch the air currents in the room and the heat transfer. I strive to fluidly understand the physical world around me and how I can best master it for my advantage. It is who I am......it is my passion.

    -Could make a small hole in it, insert a basic earring loop, and turn it into a Lego earring.
    that was the most interesting one I thought of lol.

    Is it weird that the first thing I thought of doing with the bricks of lego was to make them into shoes?
    ...or is that sadistic?

    I mean, anybody in their right mind would immediately grasp the nearest cheese grater, grind up the Lego and extrude the pile of shavings through a teapot to create abs filament for their pocket 3D printer, of course. Although I do suppose you COULD use the underside as a mold for ice cubes, especially for tiny people.

    Either build something with it, or throw it at someone you hate.

    aside from simply building one of the billions of possible combinations of stuff you can make just by putting lego together?
    make an artsy keychain, and a key... rack? i forget what they're called, but just have a thing of lego on the wall and hang your keys from it with your keychain.
    put it in someone's shoe. someone who wears thin socks or no socks.
    hipster jewelry.
