  • In 1997, Gael Boglione and her husband Francesco moved their young family from central London to Richmond. Their new home, Petersham House, overlooked a local plant nursery, which had been carved out of the grounds of their Queen Anne home in the 1970s. In 2004, after extensive restoration works, the nursery re-opened, completely transformed. Furniture, gifts and antiques were found amongst the plants which adorned the greenhouses, and in the most elegant wooden teahouse. Over the years the family have steadily nurtured the space in to a beloved lifestyle destination, reflective of their values, love of food and personal collections within their home. Now Petersham’s next generation are stepping forward, forging a future for the nurseries with Petersham offshoots including a new base in Covent Garden. In this film we speak with the women of Petersham, Gael, her eldest daughter Lara, and her youngest daughter Ruby.

Yes, it's quite appaling. Especially if you go on Glassdoor and check their former employees reviews. 20% would recommend it to their friends. Most reviews are 1 star out of five! There are also very negative opinions about MD Laura Boglione herself. I used to shop in their Covent Garden stunning shop and was always surprised, that every time I go there there are new Sales Advisors serving me. Went to check the website then and Indeed to see what people from inside are saying about this company. I was so shocked that I just stopped visiting and spending my money in this place to make owners rich and their workers miserable.

The parents have that insanely fabulous combination of upper-crust Anglo-Italian style that is the perfect blend of old and new money, classical and contemporary, historic yet fashionista, formal while effortlessly carelessly casual, severely pared back yet when it occasionally rips is full blown and extravagant. I laughed when she said ‘we’re moving to the country’, Richmond IS like an 18th century county town, but it’s on the Tube, rammed into London, every second home is a rock star’s palace or a movie director’s lair. I’ve been to Petersham Nurseries, it was beyond ludicrously overpriced, the service was diabolical and we were coolly turned away from the dining/tea places except for coffee, as it’s booked up months in advance. But I still loved it. Their house is to die for, it’s like if Merchant Ivory characters lived today, this would be it.

I think the architecture of the house is gorgeous, but interiors-wise it's missing warmth and personality, especially compared to the kinds of eccentric and colourful houses usually featured on this channel which are so emblematic of British design. The sheer amount of empty space in the rooms, and the expanses of bare floor, are striking and a little unsettling to me (made worse, I suppose, by the darkness and cold colour palette). But I suppose that in London, having such a huge amount of empty space is THE status symbol.

If you go to Japan at any point, make sure to check out the surprising home of Mariko Gonda-- she opens her garden up to the public and for a small entry fee you also get to enjoy a cup of tea in her rose garden. Her garden is not what you'd imagine to see an hour's drive north of Tokyo, that's for sure. A little hidden gem if you ever get to Japan and want to see what artists and inspired eccentric folks are doing outside of traditional landscaping and crafts. There's also a florist in the area called Hiroo that has a treehouse cafe...right in central Tokyo! I hope so sincerely that Covid doesn't entirely crush the entrepreneurial spirit of independent business owners around the world, and frighten or put off artists from wanting to take a risk in creating their pop-up shops and other artistic expressions which aim to delight with their one of a kind, highly idiosyncratic mix of magic and commerce. There's only so much online living human beings want to do, y'know what I mean? I miss all of this beauty and inspiration, being able to wander about the 3-D world of other people's vision and passions... :)

What in the world is wrong with being rich??? Whatever is said, this family works very hard and I love how they work together as a family. Good for them and blessings!!!

Its not the wealth that is the issue, it's the lack of self-awareness and elitist views of it all. King Soloman was rich and everyone loved him, as well as God. A wealthy person is given great power and privilege which comes with responsibilities, and one of those responsibilities is to not become a snob, self-promoting or materialistic. If some of the wealth is used to create jobs and things of beauty, that's fine, as long as the credit is given to those that actually did the work.

I'm intrigued by her husband's tastes. Who the hell needs to be persuaded to move from the filthy, soulless, menacing dump that is central London to the gorgeous, much safer, leafy, historic "outer suburb" that is Richmond?! Most people consider Richmond to be 'outer London', it's definitely NOT considered "the country". Her husband is an oddball, I don't get him. You couldn't pay me to live in central London.

They have access to all the contacts the riches the best of the best. Constantly being surrounded by people who are major influencers in the world. Even travelling the world gives one so many creative ideas. Many are in the business of creating and meet other creators.

Must really feel terrible to move out your red Ferrari to make room for a kitchen. At first I thought she was going to say that they sold it to sponsor the restaurant but no no no. Arrogance has no limits with these people. Such a shame actually since the place has such great potential . But when I see the chaotic scenery I realise that class can''t be bought.
