Hello. I’m very glad I found this channel. It’s wonderful learning how to dehydrate.
Welcome!
I do meals-on-wheels type meals for my elderly dad. He's 81 and has trouble chewing some things with his dentures. I put some of this in pretty much all of his meals for extra vegetables.
Funny enough I cleaned out mine yesterday, some dubious looking cocktail sausages and pork pies 2 lots of very green looking cheese and a solid lump of mayonnaise. Yours looks a lot healthier 🤣
I did not show the other stuff lol
@@ThePurposefulPantry 🤣🤣🤣
@Steve Day 🤣🤣🤣
I hate it when I have to chase the stuff around the fridge
🤣🤣
I love dehydrated veggies for soups, rice and pasta dishes. My spaghetti sauce has pepper, onions, squash, zucchini, asparagus, carrots, spinach and whatever else I decide to toss in. You just can't go wrong with veggies!
You are a life saver! I think I could freeze some of that blend for those first uses you named, and dry the rest! My poor chickens will never have any scraps!
HAHAHA! Yes, I have some of the 'mush' in the freezer right now that I need to pull out for shepherd's pie this weekend - lamb was actually less expensive than beef!
Since being diagnosed with Diverticular Disease in October 22, I've struggled with eating certain vegetables. I've been trying my hand at dehydrating. I haven't done much because my machine isn't adjustable. But, doing veggies like this could really help me get more of them into my diet. Especially the powdered form. It might not hurt me. Thank you.
Darcy, the method you use for sticking on paper, it helped. Love the time you've spent teaching this ole gal. Sure hope you and yours stayed safe through the storm.
I pray everything is getting better. You seem stressed and overwhelmed in this vid... praying that all is well.
Love this video too!!GOD BLESS
I did this and it makes delicious broth
I made some vegetable soup from dehydrated carrots, corn, and celery , and other veggies I grew. Was so delicious
I can't wait to try the powdered veggies, always dehydrated them separately.
I really like the Silicon mesh. So great and easy to use.
very nice, try to make soup with what needs to be used up, but I dont have that much celery...ever! lol, also no dehydrator, but I want one now ;-) thank you for the video
Oven works fine for dehydrating as well.
Veggie stock!! Thank you for that tip!
I hope your family is okay, Darcy. Praying for them.
Ty u answered and showed me a lot of things I was wondering about.
And now you have Balance of Nature without the $90//month price tag! I make sure to add those things I won’t eat fresh, like kale, broccoli, and spinach, which are powerhouse foods. I love adding it to rice dishes. I not only do this, too, Darci, but I teach it to the students of all ages in a center for the blind! Yes, of course blind people can dehydrate food, too! I am, and I do! Cooked or blanched, dried and powdered, it can also be added to capsules for those who want it portable.
That's helpful
Stuffing starter!
Wow what great information 😮
Hahaha. I just did that with my freezer. 👍🏼.
Brilliant!
The veggies look delicious. I'm thinking you can throw some in if you're making ramen or any other soup to make it more filling and definitely healthier!
Sounds great!
How would you blanch the veggies before dehydrating?
Before chopping or after?
If you cut them up and blanched first. Or you could put this all in a skillet and lightly saute' it.
Awesome!!! I am sooooo inspired now! Thanks luvlie!
Another question on storage. I have some pantry cans from Thrive. Would I be able to use those for a longer term storage if a moisture absorber was used?
Do you mean once opened? Yes for some. But you can always put them into a jar and vacuum seal them, too.
Very well presented. 😊 thanks
Hi Darcy ! thank you for your channel
I don't. I prefer freeze-dried for better shelf-stability.
😌thank you
I heard that parchment has a coating on it. When you are trying to scrape off the veggies, does any of the coating come off?
Not that I've experienced, but I don't use it (what you see me using the most here is fruit leather sheets that look like parchment). But it isn't water proof, so things with high moisture can stick to it.
Wow! My food processor doesn’t do that😮
Doesn't chop your veg up? Does it only work with discs?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
100% a waste of time and energy for this small amount of power. Why did you not just make a vegetable soup and freeze it?
Some folks don't have freezer space.. like us , we have zero freezer space. This would be great to have on hand dried.
Sometimes people don’t have freezer space.
how is it a waste? That powder is worth all that veg that's there on the counter already and can be used in ANYTHING I cook. My family doesn't eat vegetable soup, which would have been and even bigger waste. So I'd say I did a much better job of saving my food and using it for my family - thanks very much.
I love dehydrating vegetables just like that. Add a little celery seed and salt mix with sour cream- vegetable dip mix!
That's a great idea
Yep!
I like that idea. Are you talking about the veggie crumbs or the powder ?
I was laid up for many weeks this winter and I used my dehydrated "left over" veggies in my big thermos pot with boiling water and some salt & pepper. I brought stuff to my bedside and had soup whenever I needed food. As I felt a little stronger I made things with pasta too.
Thank you so much. I'm post cancer (esophageal caner) I don't have an esophagus any longer. So getting nutrition is a challenge. Your veggie powders have been such a blessing. Thank you.
Surely you must know about Moringga powder by now then?
I love this. I hate hate wasting anything especially food. Great ideas .thank you for a useful video.
An idea or two - add a bit to stuffing, or even something like cornbread muffins. Add to sour cream to make a veggie dip (sort of a take-off of onion soup mix dip).
I have been dehydrating a long time but combining and blending leftover veg never occurred to me. Big thanks
Darcy you are amazing! Thank you for being an incredible teacher. ~Kate
Ha ha ha! You lost your train of thought and had to post the last part of your sentence. Darcy, I love you! That happens to me ALL THE TIME! And thank you for not having the perfect refrigerator. You are real and you are wonderful! Thank you for sharing your knowledge of dehydrating and just for being you!
What a fabulous way to save veggies. I know so many single people and having large quantities of anything fresh becomes an issue. This, however, is a grand solution. Thank you for sharing!
You are so welcome!
What a lovely, thoughtful person you are. 😁😇❤️
Ive done cauliflower, broccoli, and kale, but thats all the veggies ive ever dehydrated. Gonna have to try this cause id love to get some added veggies in dishes. Especially cause my son hates veggies. This would be easy to mix in and he wouldnt even know haha.
Wow! Thank you! Sometimes I don't have time to chop and dice everything. This is a game changer.
Glad it was helpful!
This would be great to add to my dogs raw food to add complete nutritio
I will be trying this, for me nutrient deficient picky other half 😆
Since I usually make meals for 3 or 4 portions, what amount of powder do you usually put per person?
I can’t wait to be sneaky, lol
It is a personal preference. My kiddo can taste it in his Mac n cheese if I use more than a tablespoon, so you will have to experiment.
Don't try to hide a full daya serving of veg into one dish. Smaller amounts in everything boost
Some is better than none! Thank you so much for the reply ❤
Parchment paper in my dehydrator! Now that you said it, I had a "duh" moment. I should have realized that already!
You and me both. 😊
You have been a lifesaver for me! I hate to waste food and I freeze a lot of veggies for soups and such but this will save my freezer space and get some hidden veggies into my "anti anything green" hubby. Thank you and God bless.
I sorta do this with the over abundance of greens in the spring/early summer - I grind it fine to use in gravies, soups/stews, etc. My kids always say "mom puts that sh.. in almost everything". Extra vitamins :)
I am the same!
I appreciate this. I am on the edge of losing my job and I have been needing a strategy to have nutrition and have a lifetime history of wasting fresh vegetables and that has to stop. Can things like kale or spinach or other greens be added in? Do things dehydrate at the same rate?
In this small size, mostly -but you can't over dry, so you just dry until it's dry.
Yes
So today I ground up my vegetables and they are now in the dehydrator, we'll see how it turns out. Once again thank you.
Hope you enjoy
Haha, did you know we were all cleaning our refrigerators this weekend?! I totally get the "making plans", then whoops! Other priorities. Hope things are going better now. It's great to be able to take some of the stress out of life by salvaging what's still good and dehydrating it for later use. I thought I had more patience, but I've figured out that I prefer instant gratification when I rehydrate, lol. So I really appreciate the tips about doing some cooking or blanching first. Thanks so much for sharing! 😊
Yeah - all is good. Thanks :)
Yes! Every time the door opens I "smell" something. It has to be done!
Ah vegeta, amazing addition to every dish! It's quite popular in slavic countries and Hungary too! :D
Yes without all the chemicals.
I find Vegeta to be way too salty.
Minus the onion peels this dried mixture would be great for rice, yum! Like a full veggie sofrito!
“Use it up” mix… a great way to make sure you don’t waste veg. You can throw it in everything!
I agree with you regarding the silicone sheets. Everything sticks and it is difficult to get off. Thanks for the great tip for saving produce that may otherwise end up in the compost a few days later. I had not thought of doing this.
Well, composting is never wasteful as it is what feeds the plants that are feeding you!
This is so smart!
Darcy one of the things i love about you is you are not afraid of getting messy or making a mess which i feel is true life and we all do it!!!!
Yep - I'm all about real life.
Absolutely a great video!! You are always so amazing. Great tutorial!
Thank you so much!
Really Well explained! No time wasting and straight to the point with all questions answered :-) Thanks and greetings from Germany
Excellent idea!!!!! Thank you! ♥️
You are so welcome!
Fantastic! I love it! Beautiful colors! Thanks!
Thank you so much for takin& 5he tie out of your busy schedule to do this. A lot of people would just throw everything out and start again.
The #1 thing I love about my dehydrator is that I don't throw out rotten vegetables any more! If I can't use them to cook with I can always dehydrate them and use them later. I am slowly building a cupboard like yours with various dried stock to use. I just love knowing I can try a new recipe that uses jalapeños without running to the store to buy them because I have some dried in my cupboard! I can buy a bunch of peppers on sale and dehydrate them for use whenever I want. It's so great!
I love this idea of shredding first!! Thank you, Darcy!
I am going to try this in the summer when I have so much veg! I use powdered mushroom, tomatos, courgette all winter long! the whole of the summer I have my dehydrator running of months at a time lol
I like adding 2Tbs. To my hamburger when I’m making hamburgers , sloppy joes, hamb steak covered in gravy. I use the powder in my breading crumbs with my chicken breading. Adds great flavor and nutrition, of course soups, stews, roasts, baked chicken, with dry rubs too. The powder can be used on so much. I also have mushroom powder mixed in this too.
Great idea for dried lots of veggies. Great for soups 👍🏼 Also would be good on a salad
Thanks for using and showing how the different 'liner' options work!
Yeah, me too!
Thanks, Darcy! 🙏
Newbie to dehy, new to your channel. I just LOVE your videos because of the use of various tools and methods in a single video. Thank you!!
Fabulous! I love that when I'm thinking about doing something, the way is shown. First time your channel has ever made it to my feed and I am grateful 🙏
Wow! Genius! Thank you Darcy, this is really great, it will ve so useful, just what I need. It is so well explained. Bravo! 🥰
Thank you for this idea! I'm going to do this but put in our freeze dryer! God bless all!
GIRL - You are DA BOMB! You are bringing back the art of homesteading w/out making it complicated. GOD BLESS YOU! (And...I hope your sudden trip was for joy and not sorrow. PRAYERS)
Well, homesteading not so much...frugal homekeeping sure.
Awesome idea. I have stocked up on green and red lentils. This would work great for lentil soup!
Great for camping and backpacking
This looks so easy! What a great idea! Thanks for teaching this! I need to learn to dehydrate everything that I can!
You should!
Fantastic Darcy! I think I'll make a mire poix this way too!
Yep - it works wonders!
Learn something.... many things.... new each time. THANK YOU SO MUCH : ) I am making my Excalibur earn its keep...hahaha.
I've always wanted to make my own veggie powder 🤓 Thanks for sharing your experiences!
What a very helpful tip!! Thanks so much, Darcy.
Great idea!!
Thanks for the inspiration.
I be making egg rolls with that😅
Such a great idea!! I have to get back to dehydrating soon.
You should!
I’ve done this for years, just froze it in snack sized bags as I don’t have a freeze dryer or dehydrator and can’t afford those machines. I added it to meatloaf, I put in a steam bag then added to mashed potatoes, I told the kids it was mashed potatoes with sprinkles. 😂 Yo can add it to so much.
You can get a dehydrator at walmart for $35.
Oh Lord. Need to clean mine so bad. Sadly I have been sick several days. Feeling better, but weak. Going to clean it out as soon as I can.
Take your time...you need to finish healing first !
Being sick is so unhelpful. Yep, mee too. Some food went to waste. Menu planning -out the window!
i have never done any of this yet. i got a dehydrater for christmas and im wondering if you can use wax paper, and thank you
Parchment/baking paper/grease-proof paper, yes. Wax paper is not recommended.
Very useful information.
Glad you think so!
This is a wonderful idea, thank you. This is especially helpful for individuals who can’t use a full celery or onion etc by themselves.
Glad it was helpful!
QUESTION: I have home-canned carrots and cabbage and such my family doesnt care for, can I dehydrate them for like a soup thickener?
yes
Beautiful and a great tip. We throw away so much food because we can't get to it.
Buena idea y muy práctica
Seeing this list reminded me of the powdered stock /soup mixes I made once but also reminded me of 2 small bags of veg I'm wanting to use up soon for freezer space looks like itl be dehydrated then ground to a powder to be measured for the mixes :) thanks
I have just created mushroom powder and veg powder using up items from my fridge 🙃 so happy. Less waste more nutrition
My mom had a catering and way overbought celery. I’m dehydrating it today!
I hope the family emergency is Ok now, I need to do a cleanout like this, plus bunch of dandelions frozen in garage
Thanks! It is.
I have a round dehydrator I would have to cut the sheets differently. I have hardly used it. I was disappointed in the oranges I did. I also did a few other fruits and in the end, it was almost nothing there. The strawberries were like "where did they go"? ... But this looks like something I would really want to use. We love soups!
Wait till you dry melons 😁😁😁
Drying fruits seems to work for my allergies though. Can't have the fresh fruit without it being heated to 100°C, but after drying it, I can eat melons again! And lots of other fruit. Even though the remaining fruit are so small, they are delicious 😁
I have been eyeing Amazon listing for vegetable stew mix. As I write is it half off today. 🤦♀Why should I buy what THEY THINK my vegetable stew should be? I can do it like Sinatra, MY WAY. Thanks for the tutorial and encouragement. I CAN do this!
You can! However, don't discount having convenience real foods on your shelves, either. I COULD dehydrate beef, but I prefer to have the freeze dried done for me and shelf-stable, than dehydrating it myself.
@@ThePurposefulPantry Totally agree! I yearn to own a freeze dryer. In the meantime I am procuring freeze dried fruits and veg to see if the expense will pay off for me. I am gluten free/plant based/pescetarian I don't foresee ever wanting to freeze dry fish. Yuk. No way can I see reaching for that. Currently, I rely on Nutrient Survival for great freeze dried 15 year shelf foods and meals. Freeze dried holds on to so much more nutrients.
Speaking of shelf stable, I have found the MOST incredible dairy product. It is hidden in plain sight, and we haven't even noticed. Aldi occasionally uses an outside brand when they don't have half and half to offer. In the cooler, right were the half and half and whipped cream. You will see a white rectangular box with blue font BYRNE Dairy. 6 month bbd currently. It is a quart and reasonably priced. (can't think what I paid). Cracks me up they have no idea they don't need to store it in the cooler. But grateful they are, once the secret gets out that will be snatched up. Shhhh. 🤫 don't tell TOO many people! 😉
500 sheet of parchment on Amazon little bigger than my dehydrator trays, i just fold it of cut to correct size not hanging off the bottom. I have a worse time of stuff sticking to my leather trays than the paper
Darcy, I have some dehydrated veggies from 2019. Can I still use them (for vegetable powder) or do you think that is too old?
Only you can decide :) If they still taste okay - they are fine. You may notice a change in texture or taste, but if it still tastes fine. use it.
