In 2019 U.K. film maker and broadcaster, Paul Heiney (That’s Life, Watchdog et al) decided to make a ‘for fun’ documentary about the cinema organ at the Southwold Electric Picture Palace, Suffolk, U.K.
The award-winning building is owned and run by the Southwold Film Society, a charitable Trust committed to the educational value of film.
Designed by local architect John Bennett, the primary aim is to recapture the experience of cinema-going in the mid twentieth century, acknowledging that the activity is not just about seeing a film but recognising also that the personnel, environment and programming have an equally important part to play in terms of a “good night out”.
So… you will find a commissionaire outside, usherettes, a front of house manager in a DJ etc. to compliment the royal box, upper circle and ‘screen two’! There are three seasons throughout the year at Southwold E.P.P. which show a variety of films. The National Anthem is played at the end.
Another treat for the audiences is being entertained by the cinema's 'virtual theatre pipe organ' with popular tunes. In this short film regular organist Tom Horton features alongside E.P.P. founder John Bennett in interview, plus a few familiar faces and…. a little ‘story’ too!
All those taking part in this fun film project gave their time and services completely free of charge.
Enjoy!

Brilliant! Really lovely video
Thanks Lee :)
The look on that ladies face in the intro when the organ rises up and the tears of joy in her eyes are… just priceless!
It was a fun film to make!

Yes it was a fun film to make Jack - hope you enjoy the Theatre Organ Favourites concert too
Tom
I do. indeed. I am/ was longtime involved in committee tasks for the NOF (www.theaterorgel.nl) since about 40 odd years!
Hi Jack
Yes I know of the NOF - would love to come play a concert there one day in the future!

Tom
Brilliant film, lots of information mixed with humour and pathos!
thanks! Tom
Thanks for making this. Since I found you on RUclips about a month ago, I am watching all your videos. Because of you, I have started playing again every night and enjoying it. This video is a bit of genius. That old lady really tugs at your heartstrings.
Jim - I’m delighted to hear you are back at the console - well done!
Yes Mr Heiney’s story was very nice - apt as in the heyday many cinema organs were household names / celebrities.
Best regards
Tom
Very interesting and entertaining. Thank you Tom for starting the New Year off with a surprise.
Really pleased you liked it! Tom
I see you can stay in shape just getting to and from the console. Good work. Enjoy your lessons.
Delighted to hear you enjoyed it Robert! Yes, getting up and down the tunnel is a good workout :)
Tom
I thought it was going to have a dark ending where she abducts Tom and keeps him as her slave.
That's going to be the Director's Cut, Leigh!
Did you play the trolley song in this video
Possibly...it’s one I play!
Nice. Wish we had more of that here in Oz.
It’s a fun place - sadly no room for pipe chambers!
Tom
What is your signature song tom
Do you know...I’ve never chosen one.
Perhaps ‘If My Friends Could See Me Now’ from Sweet Charity :)
Happy New Year Tom - Thanks for the very interesting film .. Have you ever played the Blackpool Tower ?....................
Thanks Bill and HNY to you too.
Nope never played the Tower Wurlitzer - one day....
the ergonomic nightmare known as the organ backstage.
Yes it is cosy in the cinema!
Hi Tom. I watched the video again, and I'm convinced you should get hazardous duty pay. If you don't duck your head at the end, decapitation may result. The organ looks like a very late model. I'm wondering what it is.
Yes it’s a timed sequence to wave, duck, get you hands and head clear :)
It’s not a real pipe organ, it’s a virtual computer job.
@@KeyboardSkillsPro Tom, I hope you understand all this is in jest. I have to give credit where credit is due. The theater appears to be rather small, and I think it's absolutely ingenious the way theater organ was able to be placed where it wouldn't otherwise be possible. If there's a will, there's a way. I love the lady in the front row with her fascination of organ. If the young lad in the audience is as interested as he appeared, grab him by the hand and let him have a go at the keyboard. That's how I got started. Best of luck and a very happy new year to you and yours.
I smiled a lot when I read you 'danger money' comment, Robert!
The cinema did look at 'ready made' electronic organs but all were too big - the job is made up of various parts (Midi keyboards/pedals/ speakers/ Hauptwerk software) but it makes the right sound for the job - the organ case is only 1m x 1.2m big.
The lady in the front row is called Wendy and is a friend of the director's. The young lad is an ex-piano student of mine (he moved away to boarding school so has lessons there) so I've already got him on his musical journey!
Enjoy your music making Robert and many thanks for watching my channel.
Tom
Tom, You can't go wrong with Hauptwerk. I'd sure that's why it sounds so good. I've been toying with putting Hauptwerk on my Kawai XR-9000. What you have there is very impressive.
