    I find your videos extremely educational as it fills in a lot of history that I've always been curious about. I also deeply appreciate you're preciseness about language and how important language is when trying to understand where a person or a group is coming from. thank you so much for making these videos available.

    I'm very curious as to how you produce your RUclips Videos? They are comfortably enthralling, yet subjectively intuitive! A rare symbiosis.

      Vick Valoure // Hey Vick. You're actually the first person to ask me that. :)
      Short answer: I do the audio live on a mic to ensure it sounds closer to a live lecture. After I put that through post-production I use Adobe Premiere and build the video on top of it. My goal was for it to not sound read or "performed" but also not sound like I'm just talking over a boring powerpoint.

    Segregation as it was practiced relied on government enforcement, that is, authoritarianism. When evangelicals are consistent with the gospel, they would not support segregation imposed by the state.

    So as one who recognizes a clear distinction between Evangelicals and Fundamentalists, I am a bit troubled at the lack of clear distinction in this video, since we Evangelicals are often stereotyped as "fundamentalists" by the irreligious. And I should have known better than to read the comment section, but it does surprise me that there's so much anti-Christian hostility here, given that this is a channel dedicated to Christian theology.

    Can one be a fundamentalist and still be modern? My veiw of fundamentalism is simple believing in the core fundamentals of the Gospel, Genesis etc. Nothing to do with racism etc. But then, I am in Australia.

    • @MeadeSkeltonMusic

      Why would you think fundamentalism would be racism anyway? BTW, everything you said about fundamentalism is exactly what it is. Belief in the fundamentals of the Bible.

    I think an important factor that is key to the 'segregation/civil rights' issue was the fear of communism at the time, which was associated with many of those leaders including MLK Jr. himself. There was much cause for concern. Now we see the fruits of civil rights which has largely been societal division in the cultural-Marxist context.

    Great video/lecture. I found it helpful to watch it subsequent to "Liberalism and the Church". We might observe the early church father Tertullian and the plethora of information on his discourses concerning how a Christian should function in a modern pagan society and his rebuttals against secular society. Tertullian might be one of the first of well known persons to assume this evangelical type approach.

    I'm a christian turned atheist. My tenacious mind slowly consumed my faith. However, if I was to find undeniable proof that the God of Moses is really our creator, then I would humbly repent! Life is short, so I'm searching, reading, listening,..exploring ALL avenues of thought available to religion & science for the truth. And, your videos most likely contain the answers I seek. It would be a real bummer to die as an atheist, only to discover I'm wrong while standing in front of those pearly gates!

      Vick...keep searching for truth. Absolute truth. It exists and you actually probably believe it more than you realize. You did, after all, mention standing in front of the "pearly gates". If you didn't have belief...you wouldn't believe they exist for you to be shut out from. This is an article you may find interesting and helpful...whether you are considering Catholicism or not...I hope you read it...

      History is laid out before it happens. Look at the book of Daniel. Nebuchadnezzar's dream describes the Persian, Macedonian, and Roman empires and the feet of clay mixed with iron is the divided states of Western Europe. This is all laid out hundreds of years before these thing happen.
      Psalm 22 reads like it is being dictated first person singular by Christ as he was hanging on the cross, again that is hundreds of years before it actually happened.
      If you look at the 70 weeks of Daniel prophecy you will find that it predicts Christ's presentation of himself as Messiah down to the very day.
      These are just a few of the hundreds of prophecies that have been fulfilled. If you look for proof of god in the right places you will find it.

      G'day Savage Servant. creation.com maybe a good start and I think Ravi Zacharias is also very interesting. But creation.com can help answer some serious historical questions and why the uniformatarian veiw (which is foundational to Darwin's veiw) does fit the evidence. I could waffle on for ages, but see how you go with these pointers.

    • @RyanReevesM
      @RyanReevesM  6 лет назад +2

      Yes in the historic usage of the word. I realize after that some may mishear the point, since the word 'evangelical' today is much clearer than it was at the turn of the century. I do not mean he is one by today's definition.

    • @ericlefevre7741
      @ericlefevre7741 6 лет назад +2

      Ah, that explanation makes sense. I did a double-take when I heard that the first time, and can now see why people would get confused.
      Side note, confusion of labels are why I have begun to shun the "evangelical" label. I have started to refer to myself as a "confessional" protestant. However, I am not all too happy with that descriptor either, since referring to myself as a "confessional" protestant would imply that theological modernists and post-modernists don't have a confession, which they most assuredly do.

    Your lectures on ancient and medieval religion were excellent. I learned a great deal. In these lectures on modern religion, especially the late 19th and early 20th century, I learned almost nothing.
    After watching this I still have no idea how Evangelicalism (as a movement) came to be. I could not even tell you what Evangelicalism really is.
    I just cannot follow you. Graham is CLEARLY hostile, very critical, and anti-intellectual. There is no other honest way to describe Graham's message or legacy. I know you work for one of those Universities. I suspect that holds you back from honestly or clearly explaining this.

    • @RyanReevesM
      @RyanReevesM  8 лет назад +15

      No that doesn't hold me back working here. I think the gap in the story for you may be the backstory that happens up UNTIL this point. The videos from the Pilgrims until Graham connects the evolution from Protestant to Evangelical. There are tensions (intellectual and anti-intellectual, as you mention), that come from this evolution. Some of this is a strength: evangelicalism is very nimble and work across institutions and denominations. But there are problems that come with these strengths. But I would say check the videos in the story prior to this starting with the pilgrims and you may see the trajectory better.

    • @jamieg103
      @jamieg103 8 лет назад +12

      +Ryan Reeves thank you for responding to my hostile comment. This has not been a good week for me to try and understand Evangelicalism and I am afraid I took some of that hurt out on you. I apologize for that.

    Phd. student Richard Allinger reinforces the need for the continuation of the Reformation which started five centuries ago for the following six reasons cited in his book "The Reformation Cannot Be Over !":
    i. God speaks today.
    ii. Theologians make mistakes.
    iii. New issues require new thinking.
    iv. Scriptures must have priority over confessions.
    v. The right of private judgment.
    vi. Above all, it is important that we engage in the process of (semper reformanda) "always reforming" in the proper spirit and manner.

    All of my tv programs on Comcast cable over the last 3 years are archived on youtube, just put Richard allinger in the search box...each 6o minute program makes clear what I proved in my master's thesis of 35,000 words...that the 16th century reformation cannot be over. the theologian of the 16th century john calvin is my relative on my mother's side 500 years ago , 12 generations removed...his only brother was my great (5x) -grandfather. "Semper Reformanda" ...Maranatha!

    Ryan, Please tell me when and how evolution began being taught in public schools. They say that it is science; however, it is a theory only; it has not been proven and probably never will be. However, it is taught in school as if it is a fact. I love your teachings.

    • @soulscanner66
      @soulscanner66 7 лет назад +4

      A scientific theory is just a set of physical principles, laws, and equations that explain a wide range of facts and observations. You see light coming from your screen. That's a fact. Quantum theory explains how and why this light is created and can predict how it behaves.

    The question for me and many other thinking people is how much should the Bible inform our world view? There are dichotomies that have arisen in our thinking that distract and confuse. These are nature/grace and science/religion and faith/reason. You briefly mention the late Francis Schaeffer who had a high level of integrity when it came to answering honest questions. You avoid the influence the impact of co-mingling the scientific world-view with the Biblical message that speaks from the if you like, the stars to man. The enlightenment pushed back against the reformation with its emphasis on solely by scripture. With the advent of personal computers and new search engines individuals can now do their own research and do not have to rely on the commentary of the likes of theological professors and their half baked ideas. I'm certain that if Francis Schaeffer were alive today he would have totally revised many of his views including the idea that we live on a spinning globe as he certainly took scripture seriously. Tesla told us the Earth was flat and stationary and the Sun and Moon rotated around the Earth. The Bible tells us that also along with other extra biblical books such as the book of Enoch. Less theological commentary and more attention to scripture is needed. Shalom

    People forget that God often puts people in office. The prayers (or lack thereof) of the people will be answered by God as to who reigns. People were praying for God to revive America, and we finally got Donald Trump. Finally we have a real president in the White House again.
