Imagine listening to children of the grave for the very 1st time at this concert. I would argue that up to that point in time, there had never been a song as heavy sounding as it was
The correct date for this show is July 28, 1971 - Gaelic Park, The Bronx, NY Also featured Black Oak Arkansas / Alice Cooper. On July 7 they were in Atlanta.
I saw Black Sabbath at the Painter's Mill Theater in-the-Round, Maryland, on March 7th, 1971. Same tour. I was in high school in Northern Virginia (Go Raiders!). My Dad let me use our VW bus to take my friends and me there close to Baltimore. Opening was Fleetwood Mac. It was pre-Stevie Nicks and after their Blues period (and without Peter Green, I suppose.) They had no PA system. I have no idea why Sabbath didn't share theirs. Venues were just beginning to know how to put on concerts. Venues were not prepared to mike all instruments through concert capable sound systems. Christine McVie did an extended piano solo jam thing without vocals. (Tom Zito, music reviewer for the Washington Post loved Fleetwood Mac and hated Sabbath.) The bands were set up in the round theater divided in half so you got to see one band or the other well. My friends and I were lucky. We were on the Sabbath side. Sabbath was great in this small venue. We were ecstatic to be seeing them! As we left, all the glass in the entry to the building had been smashed. At that time, in the wake of Vietnam War protests, rabid hippies were demanding that "Music should be Free". I saw smashed glass at more than one concert back in the day. We never heard the commotion nor were we aware that anyone breached the entrance doors. Those were some days, my friends. I'm proud to have been at the foundation of the birth of the Heavy Metal Genre. www.setlist.fm/setlist/black-sabbath/1971/painters-mill-music-fair-owings-mills-md-63daee9f.html Some day I'll tell you about getting on stage with Deep Purple at The Kennedy Center.
so glad my Birmingham brethren entertained you so. I ve been a Sabb fan since i was 12 when i first heard Sabbath 1 when it came out. Im 65 this year and still play them religiously. Washed a car to get the first album .Turning point of my life
Ozzy says the new LP Master of reality will be released in 2-3 weeks.. so this is that period where they probably ended the Paranoid tour and are just playing a few shows here and there. I've heard this bootleg before but this sound quality is pretty good. I sing in a Sabbath cover band.. and this is really helpful for that early Sabbath Ozzy sound.. thanks! Getting ready for my jam on Tuesday.. this is really helpful.. I'll try to sing very much like this.. lol
Just love this concert. I would have been 3 years old then. But I was corrupted early. I remember begging my big brother to make me a copy of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath when it came out😂.
Wow. This is during the actual Paranoid tour. Master Of Reality was released 2 weeks after this on July 21, 1971. Sounds awesome! Great job! Thanks for posting.
Despite Sweet Leaf being clipped off towards the end, this is best live version of it I've ever heard. Nice to hear Wicked World here as well with a little medley including Orchid and a riffage reminiscent of absent tunes). Would love to hear more recordings like emerge here.
@@pauln00b Ozzie was great by himself until he did no more tears and mama. I’m coming home. no comment on Black Sabbath after Ozzie. keep on rockin and keep it Poppin⚡️💫🍾

Thank you for posting this vary epic and rare recording. I'm a true black Sabbath fan and even though they were voted as the second best rock band ever( led zeppelin being voted as #1) I beg to differ on that. Black Sabbath is the better rock band in my opinion and always will be. "Long live black Sabbath" tony iommy is one of the baddest guitarist to ever live
For me they've been tied since I was about 13. They have a similar track record tbh. The late 70s were *not* great for the OG Sabbath lineup or Zeppelin, and they both released a couple albums in a row that were really not the most liked. I personally love both In Through The Out Door and Never Say Die, but both albums are clearly bands in a very painful growing/transitional period.
It's not really possible to make the bass louder on a stereo recording. You can try playing it back through a sound system with an equalizer, and see if you boost the low end a bit
Meanwhile, in Chicago, Coven had already released their first album June 16th , 1969. This featured the song Black Sabbath, and the bassist was named Greg "Oz" Osborne.
due to the tuning it was in D, they at the time recorded the master in both C# and D, After Forever was one of the tracks to be in D, Solitude was recorded in E
The only problem is that it doesn't match the setlist for the 7/28, Gaelic Park concert, according to concertarchivesDOTorg: Black Sabbath setlist: N.I.B. War Pigs Sweet Leaf Black Sabbath Iron Man Embryo Children of the Grave Wicked World Orchid Paranoid Fairies Wear Boots

That 8 song set could go head to head with any group and destroy them. Yes?

Bill is definitely my all time favorite drummer orchestrating unlike any other period...
he just goes with it, keith moon was also brilliant at that tho it was different genre n earlier period.
This is a really awesome version of Sweet Leaf! Thanks for sharing this show, important piece of history

loved the crowd screaming MORE!
I love this long version of Wicked World, Tony Iommi just improvised and Ozzy interacted with the audience kk
Ozzy young and fresh!❤
Gaelick Park, Bronx NY. Ticket cost 5.00. They should have played Shea, like Grand Funk did. They Rocked Riverdale that night.

What venue was this?
Date is wrong. It was July 28th in Gaelic Park.
The only problem is that it doesn't match the setlist for the 7/28, Gaelic Park concert, according to concertarchivesDOTorg:
Black Sabbath setlist:
N.I.B.
War Pigs
Sweet Leaf
Black Sabbath
Iron Man
Embryo
Children of the Grave
Wicked World
Orchid
Paranoid
Fairies Wear Boots
But then again, the listed setlists might be made up mostly from recollection, hard to tell how they collected the data.
They definitely weren't in New York on July 7, 1971.
