    Nobuo took a tour around Europe to view ancient castles and get inspiration for IX's OST, and this led to him coming back and working 10+ hour days for over a year straight. He poured himself into IX entirely and it shows, its also why he stepped back a bit from this point on and other composers started helping.

    You are right this song requires context to understand the uniqueness of it and it's not exactly a melody-driven song, it's carried by the situation that it is used in, you will definitely appreciate it more in-game for sure

    You know, it's funny that IX had one of the creepiest final boss themes with all the wailing, and the implication of the final boss itself was really dark despite what people may say about Necron, then add the fact the game deals in themes like existentialism, slavery and genocide... And it was supposed to be a "light hearted" take after the "more serious" tones of VII and VIII! lol

    • @HyperGamer14
      @HyperGamer14 Год назад +10

      That's the weird thing about it, after VII and VIII it seems like a more lighthearted adventure on the surfice but imo it's the darkest of them all since it deals with a ton of deep and heavy stuff

    • @FurryWulfz
      @FurryWulfz Год назад +9

      @@HyperGamer14 Yeah it's a really dark game under its lighthearted surface. Especially when you consider the main character is happy go lucky and one of the most lighthearted, open and selfless of the protags in FF, but was in actuality an experiment created to become the 'angel of death' and destroy humanity, essentially.

    I love that you've listened to this after you started playing the game. You saw the start of FFIX, the return to the cute, nice, high fantasy setting, and then you're welcomed to this track by what sounds like the anguished cries of tormented souls.
    Then again, I guess this pretty much summarizes JRPG as a genre.

    I think there may be some relevance to the fact that Final Fantasy 9 is also a gigantic love letter to the entire franchise up to that point, with names, references, designs, and even music drawn from every game in the series up to this point.
    Similarly, this theme strikes such a resemblance to the style of the 8 bit Final Fantasies final boss themes that I actually keep thinking this is Cloud of Darkness's battle theme from FF3. They are not the same song, of course, but in a "guess that song" contest, I am very likely to mix the two up.
    (3 3, not 6 3).
    Especially the Black Mages version of it.

  • @StarfieldDisarray
    @StarfieldDisarray Год назад +5

    Definitely an underrated track among the FF final boss themes, though I think that speaks to the high calibre of them.
    I have a little musical conspiracy theory that the little "dah nah" stings from 2:06 are a callback to Clash on the Big Bridge which considering the boss utilizes an infamous move from FFV's final boss (with the alternative name for this track *being* said move), it might not be farfetched.
    EDIT: Living up to my comment in twitch chat, here's a loredump about Necron. Necron has nothing explicit about him and has been subject to theories and discussion for 23 years. There's basically 3 general "schools of thought" for "Necron Theory". The first is taking a minimal reach and saying he's symbolic, either of the game's themes or as a more general meta jab at classic JRPGs having surprise final bosses. Another "minimal reach" idea is taking things at face value and saying he's simply just what's left at the end of existence. One of these is almost certainly the truth.
    However theories are fun and the two major theories are "Necron is Soulcage" and "Necron is an Eidolon". Starting with "Necron is Soulcage", a lot of people believe Necron is the "back side" of Soulcage and the Iifa Tree that Garland mentions, there's many variations of this theory ranging from "Necron is an omnipotent being Garland brokered a deal with for his soul replacement plan" to "Necron is literally Soulcage given access to the infinite souls of Memoria". Too much to really concisely get into.
    "Necron is an Eidolon" is interesting as it is the most backed up by an official source. The 25th Anniverary Ultimania describes Necron as "an entity that responded to Kuja's fear, anguish, and despair", matching what we know of Eidolons in FF9. People go back and forth on whether or not Necron was sealed within the Crystal Kuja destroys or was simply summoned via the Crystal like Alexander. The 25th Anniversary Ultimania also tells us that Hades was originally the final boss and he's part of his own assorted theories including "Hades was a forgotten Eidolon" which ties well into "Ozma is a forgotten Eidolon" which culminates in my personal favorite theory of "Ozma = Hades = Necron". Really though, Necron is such a vague entity that pretty much any interpretation or theory you draw is equally valid (as long as it doesn't directly contradict information we *actually* know).

    As much as I love the creepy build-up with the damned souls wailing in the background, I'm glad it eventually picks up to be more of a traditional battle theme when the fight actually starts. I don't think I could endure the wailing through the entire battle. Still, I guess it fits when you are fighting the game's manifestation of death and despair.

    for me even way back before I played the game, on first listen not knowing what this song is I fell in love with it immediately and would even listen to it for hours on end not really even sure what the context is or who the boss is. Also the comments are probably right about you needing context to fully understand this song but personally, and I'm in the minority here, the context didn't really change anything about it for me I still loved it all the same

  • @letari2252
    @letari2252 Год назад +13

    The song definitely gave my visible confusion my first listen through... but it's really damn catchy and it's grown on me. Something about Nobuo's boss tracks that have slow buildup into a bombastic jam of a tune just gets me every time.
    Having no context for a long time, my first impression of the moaning definitely gave off an uncomfortable, ominous, chaotic and desperate struggle going on with something you probably have no business fighting in the first place! It's not at the same tier of The Extreme or OWA, but it definitely grows on you. xD
    It's really cool that you're reacting to tracks *while* playing the game simultaneously instead of what you've done previously where you reacted before or after you played the game!
    👍

    • @mort6578
      @mort6578 Год назад +4

      Basically you're facing an embodiment of death. it sounds a bit cheesy but in the context of the game its like "Do you give up, or face the impossible together". You die in the final fight against the main villain, but in that moment after that you stand against Death and defy it. The voices are probably just crying souls. They're there to give a vibe that you're not in a 'normal' boss fight.

    Hearing this song on my first playthrough of my first rpg, this song blew me away. I had never heard anything like it. Then when I played 8 and heard The Extreme it blew me away even more. I can see why going from 7/8 to this would feel like a step down, esp without context. Anyway, this one's certainly not the highlight of the soundtrack but I do think it fits the moment perfectly.

    Lol the Disney Hercules comparison is exactly what I felt - and I had that from the context of seeing it within the game. So that's pretty interesting you'd imagine that from just hearing it.

  • @rachelspoon4741
    @rachelspoon4741 5 месяцев назад

    Interesting that you mentioned it reminded you of Hercules, because the final boss was initially planned to be Hades, which was moved to be the optional hidden boss end game, and so was replaced. The battle arena is that of the image of a collesium and the underworld. So you made the connection spot on with the sounds of lost souls.

    You know, it is actually one of my favourites even without me liking it exactly for the first time. It is VERY weird, at leats for me. But like, it makes sense when you play it. I love how it makes me unconfortable. For a game the kind of sells an idea of juvenile and fantasy and happy, you learn throught the journey that ffix can get pretty dark, and the final battle, the party entering a battle amidst a craziness of alian sound and a choir of the dead, moaning in dispair/pain/oblivion... I really do think it is a great final boss battle, even with its weirdness
