It’s always weird to me when someone doesn’t understand the obvious applications for a niche lens.
You seem to think it should be similar to a standard lens.
Weird.
I use it for street photography and when taking my sony to dinners and friends houses. Easy to carry and fun
Often forgotten pancakeish lens is the Zeiss biogon 35/2.8. Real compact and has a great look.
I use this lens on my M11 monochrome for street photography and it gives me the best post-war style pictures. Definitely a steal for a homeless photographer.
I had one for my M10 (which I didn't keep long), and used it as a lens cap which can take photos in a pinch. Seemed ok for that, and I would consider one again... though I prefer to have a more usable lens mounted! I had a Color-Skopar 35mm for years on my M6, M8, M9, Sony NEX, A7, Fuji X-T2... always great results, and definitely thinking about trying one with my M11.
I guess when one spends thousands of dollars on an M mount body, nothing better to slap on it than $100 dollar glass from China...
This lens reminds me of the little Olympus 15mm F/8 body cap lens for micro-4/3. The one good thing about that lens, besides having a built-in lens cap (like a P&S camera) is a detent for the hyper focal distance at F/8. I used it on a small LUMIX G5 and it was about as big as a Ricoh GRIII. I shot a grid pattern with it and created a preset to correct the raw files for its pincushion distortion and a bit of CA at the edges. Not great image quality, but small and quick to shoot with!
The 7artisans 35mm f2 has been my main lens for my M2 since I got the camera, it punches well above its weight, and unlike this one is a 'proper' lens!
I think a lens like this could almost be considered a 'training lens'. Having a fixed focal length and aperture with the only creative choices for the tog to being distance, composition, amount of light... it can be a welcoming thing. Shoot with it (and only it) for a good month or more I think might improve your 35mm compositions in general, and teach you a lot about aperture. Sometimes less is more and I think the bonus here is the compact footprint.
I actually don't mind that flare of the first shot, as long as its not too intense I think it has a charm, agree the second is too much but.
Yup, also somebody who wants to snap moments. Street.
I use the 18mm Fuji version. Works very well and quite a value.
What’s going on with the audio? It sounds kind of compressed or tinny. The voiceover on the KEH spots sounds great.
Good to see the M6 is back
Been having fun with it again! Though I should clarify, the photos in this video were all with the SL2. I have a few rolls from the M6 that I’ll develop when I get around to it.
The one and only reason for me is the 0.3m focus distance, which actually made me a bit interested in it the more I think about it (and I only shoot film).
The new Leica 35 Summilux that offers 0.4m focus is a big reason I went for that lens and I’ve been taking full advantage of it on a regular basis.
The 28mm ones from nikon went down to 25cm that's more than I ever really need.
@@mattdayphoto A great choice Matt! That’s not within my reach unfortunately, but maybe one day ;)
@@derkeksinator17 oh Is that a pancake lens? Missed that one if that’s the case
The 7artisans 35mm f/2 mark II is a wonderful lens, you should check that one out.
the 35mm f/5.6 is a glorified lens cap tbh...
I’ll see if I can borrow that one for a couple of weeks as well!
Coming to this vid late because I got one of these on E-mount for an NEX 5 as a budget p&s type thing, where the intent is to have it in my bag literally always, so size is the main thing. Maybe I should have gotten something APS-c specific, but the inter-op with my a7iii seemed like a good idea. Though who knows if I'd actually use it on that thing, I guess we'll see lol. Plus side is that it reminded me of your channel,
I was thinking of putting one on my cl - then the camera isn’t much bigger than an iPhone if you just want it in your pocket and you have a 50 mm equivalent for snaps. Can’t understand why you’d put one on an M though.
Nice review and content thanks man ! Many thanks to you, now i think i found my next toy to play with, because to me, it seems it is THE Lens to have for we...Ricoh GXR users with A12 M Mount!
With the VF-2 viewfinder...oh boi...
I've been using the Voigtlander 35mm f2.5 on my M5 for the last year and have really enjoyed it. Great video!
Beautiful lens! Thank you!
looks like an exciting one
It's a lens cap with fun built in lens. Not confusing to me.
The Sony E mount version or other mirrorless makes way more sense.
Agreed!
The M can be adapted to any mirrorless camera, so it still might be a good choice to get to Canon RF, etc.
@@RhettAndersonyes but they make the same lens for mirrorless specific cameras, unless you really love the look of the m mount version and it’s $40 cheaper for the mirrorless specific lens versions so your spending more plus money on an adapter.
@@greysuit17 I use both Sony and Canon mirrorless, and I might get a GFX.
@@RhettAnderson ah that makes more sense then
I have a Sony and liked the idea of a pancake lens. I went wit this. Sony E 16mm f/2.8 Autofocus APS-C Lens for E-Mount. It’s about the same price. Had autofocus and amazing wide angle for street scenes in a tight city like Amsterdam
That seems like a solid combo!
One could argue that lens is very inexpensive and it is, but if you buy it then never or rarely use it- you could argue it's actually a pretty expensive lens. I really don't think I would ever buy it simply based on the fact that I think I would rarely use it because I am not a professional photographer but a busy professional who has done photography for fun for a long time.
Personally, not a real fan of all these generic lens that have been flooding the market. Probably there are a few that might be good but in most cases I just divert my attention elsewhere. One instance that has been interesting me is the Light Lens Lab. Not sure if they are consensual in the community, but recreating older lens is an interesting take
Have you tried them?
This lens a a similar design to the Voigtlander 35mm f/2.5 Color Skopar that you and @Ethanlyle_photo mentioned, in the comments which is nearly identical to the Zeiss 35mm 2.8 Biogon. The Voigtlander, particularly, is a really wonderful lens and nearly as small as the 7Artisans. It's one of my favorite 35mm's.
It’s a great one! I recommend it to people often when they’re first getting into the M system.
@mattdayphoto their 35mm f1.4 Summilux copy would be a fun comparison. It get’s you a long way for the money. I understand people being critical of slapping a cheap lens on an M-body but one could consider for example when you’re more of a portrait shooter and want a 35mm just for a couple occasional landscapes.
does this fit on M3?
Interesting lens although not for me. Have you tried any Lensbaby lenses? I'd love to see some of the work you would do with one. I hope all is good with you and the fam.
I can see myself having this lens for the occasions where I want to carry a camera in my pocket. I wouldn't shoot it a lot, but would be fun to have the option.
Variety is nice!
@@mattdayphoto thanks for the video, Matt. All the best!
@mattdayphoto I don't see it on the KEH website but I'd love to see and hear your thoughts on the new Voigtlander 28mm f2.8 lenses they released for LTM and M-mount cameras
Maybe with a K-mount...
A useful body cap maybe ?!
Hey Matt just curious why did you sell ur M11M for the SL2?
35mm isn’t really for me 😅
That's a body cap
Unobtrusive for street photography
