Here's the problem, first of all they declared it a cinematic universe before really starting the universe, secondly they started their universe with a reboot of a film franchise that was already beloved by audiences and probably detracted people from wanting to see the movie in the first place. I personally believed if they had started with something that was recognizable but hadn't been in the public consciousness for a while, they probably would have had something, maybe not Dracula since Untold flopped, but maybe have it Kickstart with the invisible Man or creature from the Black lagoon which is a remake that's been in development hell for many many years. This really is the definition of both wasted opportunity and immediate failure
The Wolfman (2010) and Dracula Untold (2014) They were the ideal movies to start the universe, it's a pity they were ignored in order to start with them.
I had a idea personally. Its still on writing but I wrote a roadmap and all the movies that we’re supposed to release. I would start off with frankenstein. Then bride of the frankenstein. After that we can now go to the spin-ofs with Count Dracula and The Mummy.
Bride of Frankenstein could have been an awesome start. I personally enjoyed Dracula untold a lot it didn't flopped, but it was not successful either. The mummy with Tom Cruise really ruined everything. I was looking forward to seeing the monsters. 🥺
If I had a cinematic universe, I wouldn't rush it, I would start with a movie on its own along with sequels. Then when it's time for spin offs, then do a shared universe
@@DedricSilva they should've stayed the course with Dracula Untold as THE 1st film for The Dark Universe and also why have a new franchise centered around a man pushing 60 when there are other actors such as Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Justin Long, and more. Plus, there was no need to get that circus midget since The Mummy was going to female would have made the film modest, half of the reason why The Dark Universe didn't do too well is because Alex Kurtzman didn't want Dracula Untold in the shared universe as well as let Tom Cruise take control of The Mummy which he destroyed with his ego which I am not surprised at. Because R. Lee Ermey even said that Tom Cruise destroyed Stanley Kubrick's last film Eyes Wide Shut with his ego.
Well, after that they gave up and just decided to make those films, but unrelated to themselves. That's how we got "The Invisible Man", and it was a success
The film universe may have died, but there is a new theme park of the same name coming soon to Universal Studios Florida as part of Universal's Epic Universe! And theme composer Danny Elfman will return to make new music for the attraction!
I figured they wouldn’t (and they didn’t), but i had my fingers crossed they would stick this logo in front of THE INVISIBLE MAN (2020) just to mess with people
The logo and concept are admittedly really cool and I would've loved to have seen what became of it all. Too bad the Mummy flopped harder than a dead fish.
It's a shame that they never made the Johnny Depp version of The Invisible Man but due to the cancellation of the Dark Universe and Johnny Depp's controversy with his ex-wife, we never got to see the original version of the Johnny Depp Invisible Man.
I think it mainly had to do with failure of The Mummy, I could just imagine him sitting in the audience thinking "God damn it what did I get myself into this time ?"
We can be certain that whatever it was, it would've been far worse than the fantastic Invisible Man that we got. I can live without Russell Crowe showing up to recruit...
Honestly I'm glad we got the one we did, a focused well made movie not hampered by the need to fit into bigger thing. Having him played by a super famous name would also be pretty distracting since he only shows up like three times and we only get a good look at him in the ending.
I would like to say that this idea of a dark universe already started out wrong due to the films' proposal. Because both Dracula Untold and The Mummy by Tom Cruise are just generic action movies with monsters. Like, you want to start a shared universe of monsters and instead of making gothic horror films like the classic monster films from both Universal and Hammer, you'd rather make a generic Lord of the Rings with Dracula and a Mission: Impossible with Mummies. It was a project doomed to failure.
It’s a shame they never figured this out. If they wanted to emulate this style of franchise then they should’ve done a League of Extraordinary Gentleman style movie and just do individual films for each character then bring them together like that movie did. Do it’s own thing or whatever but same style. There was potential with that invisible man movie. They could’ve tied another flick into that one and bring the victims together to combat the monsters like some The Boys shit. There were ways to make it work….just needed to make a good movie to sell the concept first and they didn’t.
Imagine a horror genre collection called "Universal Horror Universe". Now, each letter of the Universal logo features a scene from a horror movie: U: Dracula (1931), with the scene "I am Dracula". N: Erick the phantom being unmasked by Christina I: Chucky with the ruler saying: "You've been very naughty, Miss Kettlewell!" V: Henry Frankenstein saying "It's alive!" E: Chris from "Get Out! (2017)" trying to break free from the restraints. R: The Wolf Man's roar from the 1941 version. S: The shark eating Quint in "Jaws (1975)". A: Screaming Bride of Frankenstein's Monster. L: Candyman spitting out bees in the 1992 film.
Outside of this universe floping hard, this is one of my favorite intros of ALL TIME. How it changes the music, the atmpsphere...it really made you feel you were entering into darkness.
They were already a universe in the 30s and 40's with Dracula, Wolf Man and Frankenstein's Monster (to mention a few) appearing in films together and making sequels together.
At least Warner Bros and DC Comics established the DC Extended Universe with _Man of Steel_ and _Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice._ Whether the establishment was properly executed is debatable. Universal Pictures killed its Dark Universe the moment it hyped up a subpar remake of _The Mummy._
The biggest problem, IMO, is that they tried to stuff too much into the "first" movie, and a lot of it was obviously rushed and poorly done, particularly the scenes with Jekyll and Hyde.
RIP Dark Universe......(2017-2017)
It’s rip du 2017- 2024

It was basically an abortion

Nailed it. Truth be told, the Mummy with Tom Cruise wasn't actually THAT bad. It's that it had to go against Brendan Fraser's iconic series.

@@jlei1995why skip frankenstein and go directly to bride. Awful idea.
This is honestly a brilliant logo, shame the circumstances surrounding it were bad
Universal should've stayed The Course with Dracula Untold and also, they made The Mistake of giving Tom Cruise full control as well.
Lotta confidence for a new brand.
Here's the problem with this. There declaring it the dark universe. It's a bit to early to officially call it a cinematic universe.
That is true.
