MONY is oddly referring to the company Mutual of New York. The song is a cover. The original artist was Tommy James and the Shondells. When the song was being written, he looked out his hotel window and saw a Mutual of New York sign in the shortened MONY form. Song has nothing to do with the company. He just liked the way it sounded and it fit well in the song.
I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer and have watched the complete series several times. I also wondered if Spike's look was based on Billy Idol. I did extension research on the question and my conclusion is it was just a consequence. Billy Idol was a punk singer and Spike like punk music so was styled with a punk look.

yes this is the studio version that came out on the EP "Don't Stop" around 1980. There were four tracks on this record: "Mony Mony", "Dancing With Myself", "Baby Talk" and "Untouchables". It was "Mony Mony" that I bought it for but enjoy all four. "Baby Talk" is kind of like a punk-surfer song.
It's also a cover. Some people prefer the original by Tommy James and the Shondelle. Check out Tommy James and the Shonedlle's "Crystal Blue Persuasion".
In all fairness you need to check out Tommy James' original version of this...Billy Idol does a nice cover but the original was hot for its time in the late 60s.
