I absolutely loved that book too! I remember a chapter about when she first lived in nyc and they would gather left over food thrown out by hotels and restaurants. Incredible tale of survival.

I saw Patti in a show at the Roxy in L.A. in the 70's. I will never forget it. It was so powerful!

As someone who left art school more years ago than I'd like to admit, you nailed it here as regards how one had to justify everything, so that the poetry, subtlty, intuition, beauty was just knocked out of everything and it all became a became like you say, at times a mere defensive exercise. I keep coming back to Patti Smith because she is just so special. Thanks for this and look forward to future posts!

@@ArtTheoriez I've always loved Radio Ethiopia but I'm on a roll right now with Radio Ethiopia. The record and the song itself. You know Space monkey off of Easter? I think it's easter. I use to play it non stop. Being in my 20s, people still find it odd but I love her. She changed rock n roll without even trying. Heard of Nina Hagen? She's German but also sang in English. Huge in Germany from what I've heard but she was known here too. Check her out. But yeah NYC gave Patti a place to make a reverse. I met her a few years back . Worked at a bookstore and was on the side on the building and I saw her walking up and I said "have you ever heard of Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine? That famous line." She laughed and we talked for about 10 mins before she went in the bookstore and I went back inside to work . When I said that line , it was me just saying hey , Im a fan of you. She said she doesn't have a ton of people go up to her . She said maybe one or two a day and is lucky to be able to. She said she only had one radio hit for a reason. Didn't want the glitz and glam, she'll get clothes at thrift shops and and cheap basic clothes and always has. thought it was ironic because I'm talking to a musician and I had Chanel on. Lol . She was great to talk to. Probably the best. She liked my horned God tattoo and the pentacle tatt on my neck . What a time.

I just finished reading it and although I have prepared mentally for the final, I still got my heart wrenched 🥺 it's so beautifully written and it gave me thrills.
“So my last image was as the first. A sleeping youth cloaked in light, who opened his eyes with a smile of recognition for someone who had never been a stranger.”

My husband bough a copy for me while I am going through a rough spot with some family members and it has become my bible. I usually devour a book once I am attached to it. Not this one. I am taking it slow and reading a few pages a day. Her use of the English language is art itself. Loved your video!

Thanks for the comment! I agree she uses language in an amazing way. I must have read it 3 or 4 times now and I enjoy it more and more each time.

So interesting that your video popped up on my homepage. I'm reading "Just Kids" right now. I'm on page 219 to be exact. I'm totally enjoying the book too and very much love the romantic and poetic elements that comprise the book. I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would:-) To be a true artist one has to live and breathe art. I believe it says that somewhere in the book. I'm a paint artist who has a novel coming out soon. Loop of Deception. It's very artsy, romantic and poetic as well. I should send you a copy to review:-) I'm hoping it will be out by November. I enjoyed your review.🧚‍♀
