As a person with working cow horses in the US, I accidentally got an Andalusian cross from open range. His extended walk can out go any quarter horse all day long. I will never go back.
Imagine that everyone who says "I understand horses and I really can ride 'em" would really get this far. I bow deeply to a master of an amazing skills and I look up to him. One day, I'd love to look at my own skills and see something like this. Inspiration, Goal, Ideal.
Thats right Lackeisha, and in fact, i think this was the smoothest performance I have ever seen. Plus that horse is having FUN!!!! look at the bounce in his step :)
Just beautiful. This is a combination of jumping, dressage, trail riding trials and more. What training goes into this no one knows unless they've lessoned for years and years. Being a former eventer I truely loved these horse, what they are doing, the competition and the riders ability. What most of you probably don't realize either these horses are being timed as well as being judged for their execution of what they are being asked to do! AWESOME!
i am completely in ore! Wow, the partnership in which he has with his horse is incredible, an unbreakable bond, he's worked so hard and now look at him, in my opinion one of the most talented riders in the world.
The absolutely fabulous Pedro Torres a fabulous trainer & rider. There are no better riders than the classical Portuguese & the wonderful Portuguese Lusitano, or perhaps, just maybe, the Spanish & the Spanish PRE x
MOST probably LUSITANO or a cross with the PRE ( Pure Spanish Breed) The saddles are Portuguese. His outfit is too although looks a little like the Spanish "country" one. Gentle rider; makes it all look so easy. Lucky horse.
I believe this a Lusitano (:-)).He is doing a series of Working Equitation obstacles designed to test the horse's responsiveness, balance ,agility and obedience. These are the traits characteristic of the Iberian (Lusitano or Pura Raza Espanol) bred for centuries for cavalry, working cattle and bull fighting as well as being a riding or carriage horse. He is very different from the Quarter horse or Thoroughbred, but clumsy?!!and this is what he is bred to do.
Perhaps you jest? You would put up the Iberian against a Thoroughbred for racing or jumping? Neither do I see them besting a Criollo or QH at working cows. This video shows a fabulous accomplishment in training and a wonderful willingness and ability on the part of the horse - a horse of historic importance. I hope a lot of people see this - very impressive.
Pedro Torres, I've seen some of your work and you are an equally terrific filmmaker. Thank you for posting this footage. You are more than just a horse enthusiast. Wonderful!
i love how he hardly is touching the horses mouth unless he is asking to slow down. the rest he is using his leg. that horse must also trust him a lot as well.
Clearly I have some work to do with my own horse. She could do some of these things but she is no where near the level of this horse. The horse and rider are amazing to watch in this video. Bravo.
This is a high speed agility event. The horse isn't going to just dawdle along in a gentle lope. He's going to be moving with a lot of impulsion and energy and it takes a lot of effort. Why do weight lifters look tense when they lift weights? Because they are. It takes effort and it's hard work requiring many muscles to be used at once. Same with a high performance animal doing difficult movements at high speed.
you must be joking right? the iberian horse has been used as saddle horse for 2000 years, it's been used for cattle work for a good portion of that time and you think he's doing a quarter horse's work? it's a little the other way around. and if you think these horses are clumsy, watch Merlin Orpheo for instance and try to get a quarter horse doing that. My colt challanged and outmatched calves when he was just a baby loose in the pasture. these horses were born for this.
Nice horse back riding i have two horses and on one of them i do that what Pedro Torres does the working equitation and on the other i do dressage ❤️✨😃👍👏
Responding to some of the comments: it is not just the bit, but also the rider's legs and seat. I have a Spanish horse and the horses who go out with us have to canter to keep up with his working trot.
The Criollo descends from the Iberian warhorse that was brought to the Americas.... They are Spanish and it is the Spanish horse that gave the QH it's cowsense. The Spanish horse was revered by the Romans as the best warhorse and was a gift of Kings.
Hey everyone, A CRUPPER! Crupper is a tool for the horse, for going downhill, and for stopping, all he's gotta do is tuck his rump, can use his whole spine and tail to balance the rider. With a crupper, you have a better horse, and can have the girth a hole looser.
Surely you jest! Surely, you are aware that Iberian horses (Lusitanos and Andalusians) originated these moves centuries before the Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred even existed! Back then, they were simply known as Spanish horses and were in demand throughout Europe. They were used to improve numerous breeds so that they, too, could excel in this style of training. The Lipizzaner, Friesian, and others owe a huge debt to Spanish horses, as do Quarter Horses, and to a lesser extent, Thoroughbreds.
It's much more pleasing to see a horse do what it was bred to do. To see this lovely horse trained to do what a Quarter Horse or Thoroughbred does magnificently is interesting and the training and willingness of the horse exemplary but it looks a bit clumsy and forced in comparison That said, it is definitely a great accomplishment!
These horses look so much better trained and in better shape than most dressage horses I’ve ever seen
Even coming back and watching a decade later still just as incredible and unsurpassed ❤
Me too ❤

Which Western discipline did you do with cattle? Team Penning, Ranch Sorting, 3man 2gate, Cow Horse? 😊
Wwoooowwwww miles de horas de trabajo, gracias por las magnificas imajines.
What amazes me the most is how collected the horse is while taking such large strides. It really is magnificent to watch.
A balanced horse requires collection. Strength from the base of the ears, down the entire topline, down to the hocks.
This is the type of horsemanship that all riders should aspire to. . .great stuff!
Imagine that everyone who says "I understand horses and I really can ride 'em" would really get this far.

Inspiration, Goal, Ideal.
grande maestro Torres...che lavoro.....Elegans...sensibile..legerens
WOW...yes the collection is out of this world...I have not seen this in US Eventing...talk about motivation to become a better rider!
Thats right Lackeisha, and in fact, i think this was the smoothest performance I have ever seen. Plus that horse is having FUN!!!! look at the bounce in his step :)

this NEEDS to be in the olympics and be judged on the horses performance!
One incredible performance by a true master of horses.
It's like a trail class on ultra steroids. This is freaking amazing.
amazing job! I am just wondering whether this horse is able just to walk as he is used to work in high speed and it seems he enjoys that.
Such a powerful horse. Very enjoyable to watch and it would be fun.
Watched this 1,000 times when I accidentally got an Andalusian out of Monument Valley. Thank you Pedro Torres!
Muy bien, mi respecto. Que jinete y que caballo! Estupendo.
i love how he hardly is touching the horses mouth unless he is asking to slow down. the rest he is using his leg. that horse must also trust him a lot as well.

Clearly I have some work to do with my own horse. She could do some of these things but she is no where near the level of this horse. The horse and rider are amazing to watch in this video. Bravo.

My inspiration!!!!.....
Amazing, such ability.

Responding to some of the comments: it is not just the bit, but also the rider's legs and seat. I have a Spanish horse and the horses who go out with us have to canter to keep up with his working trot.
wow just amazing to watch
You are correct, a friend of mine met and rode him :)
The Criollo descends from the Iberian warhorse that was brought to the Americas.... They are Spanish and it is the Spanish horse that gave the QH it's cowsense. The Spanish horse was revered by the Romans as the best warhorse and was a gift of Kings.
MUSIC?!?! Love listening to it but can't remember the names of the songs for the life of me - the first two in particular!!
Hey everyone, A CRUPPER! Crupper is a tool for the horse, for going downhill, and for stopping, all he's gotta do is tuck his rump, can use his whole spine and tail to balance the rider. With a crupper, you have a better horse, and can have the girth a hole looser.
Super!!!!!
this is sooooow amazing crazy *.*
The fur on the back is a "Xairel", a part of the traditional portuguese riding equipment. It should protect the riders coat against the horses sweat.
Thank you!!
wow amazing! I wish I could ride so good!
....But the fur on the horseback bothers me....
Fur...? I thought they were saddle bags xD
Elena Post ...Its a traditional thing in Portugal, might be where the lady sat?

To be able to extend and collect the canter like that... wow

Quarter horses and thoroubreds get shredded to pieces in This discipline. lusitano rules...
That PRE mare he rides is awesome too making him look even better at the great riding he does!
J Ed Casillas Ehm Oxidado is not a mare and also not PRE?
Thanks
it's a typical portuguese pelham bit. it looks similar to a plain low port polo bit but has tiny rings on the sides for snaffle reins if needed.
brilliant!
