I subscribe to a number of RUclips channels based in France and to my knowledge you are the only host who has had the courage to share the situation of what is going on politically and socially in your country. Bravo Ryan! Now, after exposing the raw and ugly truth of how the rioting and mayhem is affecting every innocent citizen to some degree, it is time to shore up your own family's business that depends on tourist trade. Re-read the comments here. Consider the many cautionary warnings to keep your family and yourself safe. Again, I applaud your truth and courage.

Thank you for not pretending like this is not going on. I'm in the US and our congress is not subject to normal retirement either and its not fair here in that way either. If they serve one term of 2 years you get pension for life! When no companies here offer pensions anymore; except maybe a few union jobs. AND they want to get rid of our retirement system while keeping their pensions. I know some vloggers think people watch their channel to escape and enjoy a relaxing different perspective on things. But I find it a disservice to viewers when they completely ignore highly visible and important goings on. How do things like this effect vloggers in France. Thank you! And you did it well in just presenting facts and sharing experiences.

Retirement age is 65 here in Canada. We pay very high taxes as well. I understand the economics of it. Population is aging, and fewer people in the workforce contributing to the pension fund. BUT there has to be a vote! Last I heard, France was a democracy, not tyranny!!

As a fellow Canadian, and with total respect, who would actually vote yes? Macron knows that the people will hate this, but isn't it better than no pension at all? There's nothing in it for him, and as rough as it may feel, it is probably the only reasonable decision.

Great video Ryan. Balanced and informative. I’m Australian but lived in the UK for a number of years in my mid 20s. Loved to be able to visit France so easily and quickly. Amazing people and history so it’s heartbreaking to watch it be torn apart. The Australian retirement age has been incrementally increased over the years to age 67. Like all things it’s just a guide (eligibility to a pension). Some people retire earlier and some later. All working Australians have an individual (and mandatory) superannuation fund which can only be accessed when you retire. We also bristle every time this is tinkered with by the Government.

That is why he has the job where hard decision have to made. It is unfortunate that the people seeking to do violence are not the people who will be impacted in the near future. To have some one work to age 64 is not that out of the normal. So the question to the whole situation is why are the young people staging this? There could be plenty of time to rectify these laws. I find that people are just angry about everything and are blood thirsty and are doing this for sport.

Good to see the French still have a revolutionary spirit . It’s the way Macron has imposed it that incites the outrage . I remember the same outrage occurred over 10 yrs ago when the Govt there was raising the retirement age from 55 or 58 to 60 ! Most of the W world has reluctantly had to accept the delayed retirement age as an inevitable economic price citizens have to pay for the ageing population . Macron knows that France is prone to riots and extreme civil unrest when ANY lifestyle factors are threatened so the ultimate cost to shopkeepers, garbage, fuel, and transport has to rest at his door . The looters and exploiters are vile but any study of history shows they form a small percentage of the anger at the heart of protests such as this . The news highlights these extremes and avoids the core issues .
When the French stop rioting for civil rights we know the rest of the world is in big trouble . What did Macron expect by acting in such an undemocratic unilateral fashion ..buck stops at his door .

I know that most of these are chateau renovators or farmhouse renovators but this story you are covering is so important. I am very sympathetic to the peaceful protests against Macron’s retirement reforms. I did not realise the range of strike actions being taken. In Britain we also have a range of strikes - and again I am very sympathetic. The cost of living crisis is hitting hard across many countries. And in Britain we are truly ‘led by donkeys’. I can understand the protesting from people set to retire in a year or two... but these are thugs running amuck! Fact is, more and more people are living into their 90's. The 70yo's would have likely already been long dead, had this been the same society, from 60 years ago. Some 70yo's, today, are more healthy than the average 50yo. The baby boomers have already sucked up a lot of the money paid into retirement, (likely mismanaged funds) and soon, there will be another rush of retirees. I understand the need to increase the retirement age but there SHOULD have been a VOTE and they could have given people a 3-5 year headsup before actually enacting the new law. This was a dirty move! Even worse, to punish and pis§ off the rest of the people by shutting down garbage removal and fuel supplies???! Who the F*ck does that?! 🧐

I am also in the San Francisco Bay area and I understand how chaotic and reckless things can get due to social unrest and unfortunate outcomes. Here in the US it’s 67 years old before retirement. I remember the same happening right here in the bay area just a couple years ago. I wish your country the best possible outcome no matter how long it takes.

When they f****d up the pension age in the U.K. my mum got caught up in it. The key issue is that people make their financial plans according to the information they have available. When the government (all politicians are evil turds, this is not party specific criticism) increase the pension age at short notice then those plans can fall apart. Mum ended up being forced to retire a year before she could claim her pension anyway because she was carrying for two family members with cancer and was exhausted. But she was lucky she could afford to do it. When these sorts of changes are made there has to be a longer lead in and better ways to build up pension pots/flexible end of career working.
The loss of fit and healthy retired volunteer workers has crippled lots of sectors which previously relied heavily on them. There used to be lots retired in their fifties who would be on boards and making high powered decisions in volunteer positions and of course be full of energy and very able. But now we will be in our seventies and not only less able but also really tired. Yes health care has improved so more people are old, and that is ultimately why this is happening, but that doesn’t negate the fact that by our seventies many of us are really tired of working.
Hope your mum makes it to hospital Ryan.
We’ve had strikes, riots and fuel/food/medicine shortages in the U.K. in the last few years and it never gets nicer. The media always make it worse too by winding everyone up into a panic.

Living here in Saskatchewan Canada and Canada as a whole we have many government issues but far less than in France. Perhaps the government there will rethink those decisions for the sake of the people and the country. Take care stay safe hoping and praying for better times soon.

As an American, I'm all for protesting, it's the violence, destruction of property & looting that is unacceptable. There's always some radical faction that behaves that way that ruins it for everyone else. FYI, cost of goods, electricity, food, has gone way up here. I saw an interview with the new Mayor of Los Angeles, California... they had over 60,000 people living on the streets because housing has gotten so expensive. She said many still have jobs, but can't afford a place to live. She has already found housing for a lot of people, & is working hard & fast to house the rest of them. I live in Florida. It used to be really affordable to live here, but not anymore. Our groceries cost has doubled, wages haven't risen in 25 years, healthcare insurance costs my husband & I $800 A MONTH, even if you don't use it. It's insane. Too much corporate price gouging going on. The Republican law makers on Capitol Hill have threatened to do away with our Social Security & Medicare... & I hear some want to raise the retirement age for Social Security to 70 years old. 70! What the hell? They'd have us work until we were dead, if they had their way. So, I understand the French people protesting, just need to be smart & di it without the violence, property destruction & looting.

It's not so much the increase of retirement age, it's the way it was done. Pushed through without a vote, like a dictator would do. The grabbing of power, the loss of freedom and lawlessness on the government's part is the cause of the unrest. Which inadvertently causes the government to do more of the same to try and control the riots.

While it sucks now, I LOVE seeing the people of France really taking a stand. Maybe a group could start a movement to get all the trash moved to block off government buildings? Would also be a great time to highlight the benefits of reducing waste.
