Some women have such great style. If that singer was stepping out or performing in that head to toe look in 2024 she'd be fresh. Love the sleeve.
The singer “Toni Smith” (Thomassina Carrollyn) passed away on January 28, 2020 - Her beautiful and strong voice and her feline sensuality are eternalized in this song
Best of the best old school
16 year old Bernard Wright on piano. He died a few weeks ago on May 19th in an auto accident in Dallas.

Rest In Peace Bernard Wright. He was 16 years old playing on this song on keyboard with the Blue jacket and orange sunglasses. Your music was a gift to the world 🌎
What a jam.
That keyboard is cold on this joint.
YES👍
Loved him too
Wow, only 16?! He's jammin' like an "oldie"!

One of my favorites too. I'm 57 and I am glad to be able to find them old school jamms they made high school fun n😊
Hey I'm 60. So I feel you completely! My soul brought me here 4/28/2022! #GiveLove!!
I'm 65! This song is coming along with me until I cross the finish line!!!!
I'm sure. I'm 50 and and it takes me back.
Y'all Old ... but the funk is good.
The era when female singers were naturally beautiful ♥️♥️♥️
And they could sing!!
Still love love love...
Hell yeah
nothing but the truth
Sad in this era we’re still minimizing females to features. I know you meant it as a compliment but there’s over 5 males to 1 woman 🙃and you’re comparing her looks to other females. Not her talent. The comparing alone is micro mindset that needs elevation. Woman then and now had Brains and beauty.
RIP Toni. Your voice was out of this world! You’ll forever be missed.
You're spot on! I've listened to this song thousands of times since the day it came out, until this very day. There's no school, like old school. For those who didn't live it, you missed out.
@@silverlakegirl9078 28 year old metalhead from Jamaica, Queens here. I wasn’t born in that era, but I see this as the sound of the hood, not all this new rap and hip-hop. I grew up on music like this song and lots of jazz and fusion courtesy of my father being a musician as well, and even though I transitioned into metal, I have an unending soft spot for old school music. It hits so much different than the hip-hop and rap that was present in my area, and I’m glad to say I had good influences musically growing up.
...it's as if she were born to sing it
Sorry to hear that . How long ago did pass on . Her voice made this song .

The Jamaica Queens borough anthem
Not the island Jamaica,Thank You Tom Browne for putting it on the map
It used to have (N.Y.) in the title of the song so people would know. Sometimes it is there, but most of the time it is missing.

This jam session is a whole vibe. They knew this song was crackin when it jumped off at 0:54. The drummer’s face the whole time 😂. This is real music when you actually had to play the instruments and be able to sing.
Masterpiece.
you do know that people still have to play instruments, and sing today right? computers are instruments. MPCs are too. synths are also instruments. just because it wasnt made in your glory days doesnt make it not music. i love this stuff, and i love the stuff coming out today too.

According to my husband, Back when this was cut, 'Nard, Wink and Mike brought the record over to my father-in-law's house -- he was their karate teacher. They played it for them before it hit the radio. Same with Bernard's first album. The record in the original jacket is still there.

This was my grandpa’s favorite song.. we use to dance to this on the back pouch.. RIP Grandpa .. miss you more than you know 💙💙💙
Thank you and God bless your Grandpa. This tune helps us test telecoms and networks (with a few funky tunes) and is important to me for finishing a sub cable project to Long Island a while ago (AC-1 & AC-2 are their names). Taking a train from the Island to Penn Station through Jamaica got me and still does. Keep talking to family and keep safe. Smile and laugh, be strong. Your Grandpa is on your shoulder - as are ours. Best. Tom Browne - genius.

The intro to this song....pure class
Yes pure class!
When I first heard this song as a kid in high school. I was addicted to the intro. I would play it over and over and Toni's voice and. the bass ...everything. This is the song of my youth. One of the best. My school was located not to far from Jamaica Ave...Went to an all girl Catholic School on 161st and Jamaica Ave. Rest in Peace Toni and Bernard.
Tom Browne was born and raised in JAMAICA QUEENS NEW YORK 🇺🇸 . Through song, Tom pays homage to where he is from. The song has nothing to do with 🇯🇲 . Many know that 🇯🇲, the country, is known for Reggae not FUNK. If you did not know, now you know.

That bass line is epic
Probably my favorite song of all time!!!
whos the lady? she deserves her 💐
Her name is Toni Smith
As a kid, I thought the lady singing was Chaka Khan . Young Bernard Wright on keyboard & a young Marcus Miller on bass. No wonder this song was so funky. Chuck M.'s 'Feels So Good', Herb Alpert's 'Rotation' and *this* song from Tom Browne inspired me to take up the trumpet 🎺 and play all through junior high and high school. The perfect morning wake-up song 🎵.
A superstar line up for sure! The best of the best!
Chaka Khan has in fact said that when she first heard this song she actually thought it was a song she herself had recorded but couldn't remember the recording session when she sang it.
