    I biffed the cover artists, they are done by Erol Otus for the Classic Set and Peter Mullen for the Advanced Expansion Set, my apologies!

    Wicked! I can't believe I missed seeing this episode from last year. Splendid art, and lots of it! I like the idea of a player's book for a game, even if it was published separately and the main book had everything in it. Players can buy just the book they need and the GM can have it all. Might help book sales, too. Good point about the spine longevity, too.

      Thanks again! I don’t have these but would like to. I’ve got the tomes and those are cool too.

    I got into the OSR scene later than a lot of people. I have the classic players tome and the advanced referees tome. I wanted all the monsters and treasure! I may grab the advanced players tome sometime though. I really like Druids a lot.

      Awesome they are very nice books for sure and druids rock!

    Thanks for the review. I got these box sets during the last Kickstarter. Everything about them is top notch. In my opinion this is the best version of D&D. Not to be that guy, but I think the box covers are by Erol Otus.

      Thanks bud I completely biffed that on the covers! You are very correct. Thanks for watching. I’ll make some sort of correction.

    I bought these but was regretting is over a white box or advanced labyrinth lord but you’ve cleared my mind that it was the best choice. I also thought it would be better to buy the bigger tomes but the indexes in the opening pages and the fact that those thicker books are also A5 makes me think I made the right choice.

      Having so many books is a bit unruly, thinking of exchanging for the two advanced books

    I really like your overviews.
    --- This is a tough call for me. Old grognards such as ourselves probably have beat up copies of moldvay B/X or Mentzer , plus multiple retro clones like Labyrinth Lord , Advanced LL , Basic Fantasy , ACKS, Blood and Treasure , Dark Dungeons , etc , etc
    ----- I know B/X Essentials is a good product but i already have the above short list plus other osr games close to it.
    I guess I would just spend the money on Gavin Normans' adventures and setting stuff. ---

      They are nice and super easy to use at the table. The two advanced tomes are a better sell to me because you're getting something a bit different; a B/Xified take on AD&D. I do love the digest-sizing for portability. YMMV. I don't get why people prefer a bunch of smaller books to the tomes, but it's all about one's personal tastes.

      @@sunsin1592 i here ya. But Advanced Labyrinth Lord was the first to take b/x moldvay and combine it with AD&D 1st ed still with b/x rules. but i would of got it if i didnt own Advanced LLord

    Do you need the 'classic game set' to play with the 'advanced Expansion Set' ?

    • @GodlessRose
      @GodlessRose Год назад

      Yes, you definitely need the Classic boxed set to use the Advanced box set. That is why there is no Adventures book in the Advanced box, for instance - you are supposed to be using the one from the Classic box. But you can get Advanced rules tomes that have all the rules together.

    Given that this is already a dead and obsolete game, there are a few folks on the Necrotic Gnome forums that are none too happy about shelling out for these. Meanwhile, Gavin will just release another slightly altered version of the same thing and continue to rake in the cash.
