SAS - A340 doing a wheelie on Landing at CPH (1 Minute. Just Plain Spotting)

- I'd like to think that this pilot were showing of his skills by popping a nice wheelie in the Airbus A340-300. Although I'm pretty sure that's not the case. What you can see here is a perfect example of the use of aerodynamic braking on a long roll out.

The pilot was simply enjoying the law of physics
Its sooo nice...you can see the captain trying to keep the nose up by compensating with the elevator at the end, until it has no more authority.
maybe it was the first officer?... who knows... :P
tower: scanadavian 210 uhh your wife is here.
captain: shit!!!!!!(trying to pull up upon touchdown)
co-pilot: forces the plane to land and drops the speed as captain eagerly keeps on pulling up
Nice. It's called "aerodynamic braking" and is thoroughly discouraged in the manual. It sort of works; the downside is that you can't really use the wheel brakes as long as you have the nosewheel in the air, so most will only do it if they expect not to require wheel braking and use of maximum reverse thrust is permitted in normal operations.
It's smart because it saves the brakes from wearing out
*****
No, that's what reverse thrust is for. It's dumb because it reduces directional control once the speed reduces and it precludes the use of the wheel brakes should that become necessary. There are good reasons the manuals advise against it.
That said, with a long runway and calm wind down the runway, there is no problem with doing it as a show-off.
Aircraft such as the Vulcan needed to do it because it had weak wheel brakes, tiny airbrakes, no flaps and no reverse thrust, so aerodynamic braking was the most effective method for braking. I see F-15s do it a lot, but maybe that's just showmanship, too.
+pinkdispatcher that's so cool! It's probably not the best maneuver regarding safety which these manuals are based on. But the weather and aerodrome parameters sure allowed for it so why not practice it when one has the opportunity 😉 I bet the pilot was an old military pilot
*****
Sure sometimes you can safely do things differently, and ultimately it is the captain's sole responsibility what to do. But one must be careful not to make it a habit, because then you might do it in a situation where it could be unsafe and workload is high. That's the point of the manual discouraging it even when it is safe.
Your videos had never failed to please me... Nice one, mate!
Smooth as butter in that touchdown, and wow, the crew sure keept that wheelie for a while, kinda looked like one of those times where there's a problem with the front landing gear and the crew tries to keep the nose up as long as possible.
Great film as usual! Nice flare by the pilot.
Awesome video mate!
Wow sweet landing!
sweet! That was beautiful.
Awesome!!
Awesome. Interesting performance....
Former fighter jet pilot? ;)
Nice catch....👍
Thanks for sharing.
Que pouso fantástico! Belo vídeo!
Amazing
Nice touchdown and bleed off of the speed with the nose!
pretty cool :) !!!
Just goes to prove flying is fun...even when on the ground...thanks for sharing....Lare
Good one. :)
Now that I'd like to experience as a passenger! (And hopefully one day from the cockpit as well^^)
awesome. video I want be like you one day
A330s/340s do tend to land very elegantly, much neater than Boeings where the wheels tend to dangle with the leading wheels downwards and just thump down.
Not a bad effort that jesus christ :o
dont know which one is better...this one or Bwia...
why did he hold the nose so long up?
nice video
It's aerodynamic braking
Heathrow probably has enough runway length to a long roll out.
Aerodynamic braking?
Pilot used to fly taildragger
May I ask what you do for living?

Anyone saw the fire at 0:32 ?
+Oliver Appelberg That's just a light lol
hahaha oh yeah i saw in slow motion right now, my fault
it was an automatic landing... don't you guys realize that???
José Josivaldo Oliveira It's not. An autoland will be way harder and it'll make the nose gear drop to the ground, as autolands are usually done in a severe weather condition, and you don't want the aircraft to float and you want the nose gear to be down to have a better directional control.
*Plane* not "Plain"...
