I liked the quirkiness of the video in question, I found it very clear and easy to follow and amply showed just how easy it would be to make your own paper at home. As to young idiots who hide behind their keyboards to diss others work, well that is all they are.
thank you for taking the time to make this video. i liked it, & appreciate it. (& i laughed a few times.... especially at the shoes by merrell part. lol)
I'm taking up carpentry soon and was thinking making a similar setup for some paper making experiments. I'm gonna try make my pulp out of cotton balls and see what happens. Thanks for the video guys!
I think buying Arches is probably much easier than trying to master the art of paper making but making your own paper every now and then is great fun. Even if it ends up as rubbish as mine 😂😂🤣🤣
Am I right in assuming that if I am using recycled paper i.e. computer paper or envelopes etc that is meant to write on that the sizing already in that paper will be dissolved in the process and be part of the new paper? No need to add more sizing unless experiments show otherwise?
I honestly don't know! Also it depends on what you're going to do with the newly made paper. If you're going to write on it with a ballpoint pen then sizing is irrelevant, same to a degree with Sharpies etc. Make some and let us know! 😁
I am curious about the paper weight, and how different paper thickness are achieved (you know, different g/m2). What if someone wants thin paper? Does more pressing of the paper (when it's wet) makes it thinner?
No, the weight/thickness of the paper is determined by how much pulp you add the mould. For thick watercolor type paper you use lots of pulp, for thinner, writing style paper you use less.
Mine air dried in the sun and curled up! I tried to dry it inside for 3 days, and it still was damp. I want to make very thick papers. Tips? I had it drying on glass, was that the mistake?
Unless you can press the paper under a press to remove loads of water you will find that it'll take quite a while to dry. Think of it as laundry - enough wind and sunshine and it'll dry eventually. The paper will curl up but once dry pile it up and press it under some heavy weights to flatten it.
@@vintagepaperco345 Thanks so much! I had the courage to iron it and some other papers and they all ironed flat and dry! Took a little patience! Thanks, again!

Yes, same sort of idea. Often paper for calligraphy is prepared slightly differently where something like Gum Arabic is applied to the surface of the paper but I believe it's for the same end purpose (although I know next to nothing about calligraphy and its processes).
i think it could be measured by the amount of pulp added to the mould, which can be related to the thickness of the wood of the deckle, the height of the deckle...i dont know if i make any sense
you can't do that. actual cotton rags needs to be beaten and beaten until it's broken down and super fibrous. you can buy cotton pulp though from specialist suppliers. It looks like sheets of paper. it can be torn up and blitzed in a blender.
You can't use a blender for t shirt scraps, the fibres are too long and tough - you need something called a hollander beater to process this form of material and these are pretty expensive! For this film we used something called cotton linters which are pre prepared sheets of cotton (looks like sheets of thick card) specifically for paper making - you can buy this from paper making suppliers. You tear them up and pop them into a blender or whatever. You can also recycle paper using this method so if you have any old art paper etc this will be fine.
If you buy a papermaking deckle and mould it'll come with it. If you choose to make your own then you'll need to get a thin sheet of metal or plastic with very small holes in it, like a sieve.
Good question! It doesn't have to be gelatine sized. Paper can be sized with vegetable starch or even PVA glue brushed onto the surface and allowed to dry. It's simply that gelatine is the most effective solution that gives the best results. Paper which isn't sized is like blotting paper. So when you put watercolour or ink onto the surface it will spread without any definition of line.
Vintage Paper Co honestly I don’t even know where I could find the filter thingy 😂 I guess I could go to my mom’s to use her blender, but it doesn’t change the fact that I don’t have a mould and no staple gun to make one
Ha ha, in this instance yes. You've heard of recycled paper right? You can also use something called cotton linters which looks like paper when you get it (like thick white card) but it can't be used as paper because it hasn't had any size added to it (the stuff that stops the paper blotting when you apply ink to it). You might want to make thin paper or very thick paper so your recycled paper or cotton linters enable you to make pretty much whatever thickness and size you want. You're only limited by your equipment and in my case, VERY basic skills.

I guess I need to master paper making since Arches is unavailable or is very expensive here.

Hi can hand picked cotton be blended and used to make the paper as well?
Hi - yeah, probably. Best way to find out is to try! :)
Like cotton from a cotton plant? I don't know! Probably not.
