A Host of Angels
Yes, we know it's only January but Christmas is less than 12 months away!
We're making a set of 4 angel Christmas decorations using hand lino printed and coloured prints made on handmade paper which we then cut out (takes about 3 hours per set), then we adhere them to laser cut and hand gilded birch backings. The set will be supplied in a hand sewn storage bag made with a matching angelic fabric, made especially for these holy guys.

Burnishing (polishing) paper with the VPCo XL Agate Burnisher.
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.2 года назад
This process of burnishing paper is age old and very useful. One is able to turn the surface of a matt paper into a glossy, shiny surface. Not only can this change the visual characters of a print it also helps to add strength to the surface of a paper by consolidating the fibres. This process works very well on most printed papers including marbled paper, lino and letterpress prints and even m...

    Is burnishing done before Miniature painting is done or it is done after miniature painting is made on Waslis(Layered papers, glued togeather, of some thickness) to give it a shiny finish. In book it is written 'Latter' so, does that mean paiting is done on bumpy paper(which seems very counterintuitive) and only after painting is complete, bumps are pressed using some glass or Shiny stone or Agate or Like you used soap.

    Does the tape have a glossy finish, or alternatively a matte finish? If you are repairing something like an art print, or colorful image from a magazine, the finish of the tape over the tear may cause an undesirable contrast. I would prefer a matte finish on the tape. Thanks for vid!!

      Ha ha, in this instance yes. You've heard of recycled paper right? You can also use something called cotton linters which looks like paper when you get it (like thick white card) but it can't be used as paper because it hasn't had any size added to it (the stuff that stops the paper blotting when you apply ink to it). You might want to make thin paper or very thick paper so your recycled paper or cotton linters enable you to make pretty much whatever thickness and size you want. You're only limited by your equipment and in my case, VERY basic skills.

    • @vintagepaperco345
      @vintagepaperco345 5 лет назад

      Unless you can press the paper under a press to remove loads of water you will find that it'll take quite a while to dry. Think of it as laundry - enough wind and sunshine and it'll dry eventually. The paper will curl up but once dry pile it up and press it under some heavy weights to flatten it.

    Am I right in assuming that if I am using recycled paper i.e. computer paper or envelopes etc that is meant to write on that the sizing already in that paper will be dissolved in the process and be part of the new paper? No need to add more sizing unless experiments show otherwise?

    • @vintagepaperco345
      @vintagepaperco345 5 лет назад

      I honestly don't know! Also it depends on what you're going to do with the newly made paper. If you're going to write on it with a ballpoint pen then sizing is irrelevant, same to a degree with Sharpies etc. Make some and let us know! 😁

    I didnt understand why we cant paint or write with ink without gelatine.. ?

    • @vintagepaperco345
      @vintagepaperco345 5 лет назад

      Good question! It doesn't have to be gelatine sized. Paper can be sized with vegetable starch or even PVA glue brushed onto the surface and allowed to dry. It's simply that gelatine is the most effective solution that gives the best results. Paper which isn't sized is like blotting paper. So when you put watercolour or ink onto the surface it will spread without any definition of line.

    • @vintagepaperco345
      @vintagepaperco345 6 лет назад

      No, the weight/thickness of the paper is determined by how much pulp you add the mould. For thick watercolor type paper you use lots of pulp, for thinner, writing style paper you use less.
