What a send off, right? Having your most famous tune played on your funeral. A song that is actually is a bit more of a lighthearted one and it turns the sad funeral affair into celebrating his life and legacy, aka music he left. People were singing along and dancing as if it was a happy occasion. Hopefully the song will give the family a bit of comfort as it is being played up and down the radio stations every Christmas in Ireland. It will be one little feasable thing of Shane that will always be around and they will get to hear his voice as if he was still around. Two days after he died I came across a musician on O'Connell Street in Dublin and asked him to play "Fairytale of NY". Twas nice. Some peeps stopped and listened, I hope they enjoyed it

You should check out Nick Cave performing ‘A Rainy Night In Soho’ at Shane’s funeral too. A beautiful cover of arguably Shane’s best song.

Indeed! Indeed! Nick was incredible - his friend, I read somewhere Nick rescued this from a dustbin.
“Think where man's glory most begins and ends
And say my glory was I had such friends.”

The guy singing is Glen Hansard, won the Oscar for best original song a few years back. He was also in the Commitments as one of the band members.....the rest on stage are a mixture of famous Irish musicians and Pogue band members.

Won the award for his part on the movie 0nce, before that he was just another busker in Dublin. I wud like him better if he didn’t try to sound like the original singers of the songs he sings. and be himself as in the movie”once. that was great!🙏

"Before that he was just another busker".
He was the lead singer and guitarist in one of Dublins biggest rock bands, The Frames for over 25 years before the Oscar win. He wasn't just "a busker"

Four gentlemen on the left are the members of The Pogues:
    James Fearnley on the accordion,
Spider Stacy on the tin whistle,
    Jem Finer on the banjo,
    Terry Woods on the cittern.
A tall blonde lady in the background on the right (behind the main singer) is Cait O'Riordan, first bassist of The Pogues.
Andrew Ranken, the drummer, couldn't attend the funeral due to health issues.
Phil Chevron, the guitarist, passed away in 2013 due to throat cancer.
Darryl Hunt, the bassist, passed away in 2022.

It's a strange and beautiful thing that an English-born Irishman will forever have the hearts of the British Isles on Christmas Day. RIP Shane. Not sure if this rings out in Ireland, but it certainly does in England, Wales and Scotland. And the funniest part is, I live in NY now and none of these coppers have ever heard of Galway Bay.

In Ireland, your funeral is the best party for you that you’ll never attend. It’s a celebration of the life and legacy rather than a mourning, there’ll be plenty of time for that.

    • @Danny30011980
      @Danny30011980 Месяц назад
