I collect dolls because tiny people are adorable. Also because I'm secretly a sad lonely person who just really wants loyal friends but people are crap and dolls don't turn on you or leave you. And I at some point in my life, I think when I was quite little, I decided to prove all those people who told me I would grow up and grow out of dolls wrong.🙃 In general dolls have always been a big part of my life. When I was little my friends and I would make in-depth stories with our dolls. It was just such a good time. I agree with a lot of the stuff you said too. There is just so much do with them artwise and being able to bring a character you love into the physical world is the best.
As a male collector, I was super awkward / nervous about collecting dolls before I started. But now I just DGAF! If it makes you happy and doesn’t hurt anyone who cares!
im a male collector too but im still a minor and it sucks that i cant buy dolls i want that often. the ones i have are mainly from my childhood and my favs are monster high dolls. i was 5 when they first came out so i basically have some of the ones that came out later. im tryna catch up on them but they're so expensive and i cant afford all of them + my mom sometimes says its childish and i should ask for useful things for my bday/christmas. im scared that when ill be 18 (next year) their prices will be higher and i will never be able to fullfill my dream 🥲

Now I’m 44 and I still collect dolls and mum now understands it and supports me. My line is that the dolls will accrue value as time goes on. I have bought dolls that have gone up then down in price so things tend to balance out. Don’t give up on your dream. Be what you are and enjoy collecting dolls. It’s nothing to do with anyone else and there are a lot of other male collectors out there who will support you as well as female and trans and none binary collectors. Dolls are beautiful pieces of art. I was just thinking how beautiful the Mermaze Mermaidz collection is. The eyes and the accessories are gorgeous. If other people can’t see it brings you joy to collect dolls, it’s their problem!!!
For me I’ve always liked dolls ever since i saw a first edition Draculaura in Walmart but I always hid it cause I thought people would think it’s weird especially while being a male and I’ve been hiding it for eight years until I finally told my mom and she doesn’t like that I like them but im still gonna play with them cause I’m not doing anything wrong

I never really knew why I liked dolls too... I used to play with my bratz like action figures so idk hahahah but also mainly liked to make them look nice and fix up their hair and stuff so a good mixture for me at least

My mother in law made fun of me because I collect dolls. She said " oh look at you with your little dolls like a little girl". Then she proceeded to laugh and I laughed with her. I don't really care who judges me some ppl like different things and I don't get it but I respect it. So when people make fun of me I just shrug it off because they just don't get it, but I know I not alone. I'm 15 and I still collect dolls and enjoy admiring them and playing with em' because... Simply and honestly, they have always been my aesthetic... I love how my family has never judged me for having dolls, and they buy me dolls and support my collection!!! I’m really greatfull for that, and that they have never said I’m too old or asked me why I’m buying dolls! It’s great!
I'm one of those who personally collects a few dolls/lines I really like. I've always liked fashion dolls since I was a kid. I still love dressing up and doing my dolls' hair for display. Mixing and matching colours and clothes just makes me happy. And for the ones I don't or can't do that for (I have some LEs I personally don't intend to take out of the box and some Trollz in box because if I take them out and display them, my cat steals them), they just make me happy. Dolls are art. Like, you said, a whole team of people had to sit down and design these dolls. From the makeup to the clothing to the shoes, someone had to imagine that. One of my most prized dolls is a custom I got of my favourite Elena of Avalor character (Disney never made her) and she is beautiful. The artists I commissioned (they're sisters) do amazing customs for sale on eBay, for themselves, for commission and they do an amazing job re-painting and re-rooting and making clothes. It blows me away. That stuff is ART. And they're doing what they love for themselves and others! It just comes down to, for me: It makes me happy. That's it. No bigger, grandiose reason. It makes me happy, makes me smile and makes reality suck a little less. I also find that dressing up my dolls and brushing their hair is relaxing and helps my anxiety. And I FEEL YOU so hard on the cosplay. I personally only cosplay characters I'm super attached to whether they're popular or not. I know I don't have the best body (working on it) and that I'm sometimes too smol, but I love the characters I chose to play. I want to embody and be them. It's FUN!

I always enjoyed dolls, even if people around me found it childish or immature. being a guy it's definitely a lot harder, and for financial reasons I don't really collect, but I treasure the dolls I do have, ones that were so important to me and I think that's all that matters

I collect dolls because I enjoy it and it's something that brings me joy. I've recently started telling more people that I collect and so far I've gotten good responses, though two did laugh and say 'why do you collect dolls?'. A few years ago I would use my nieces as an excuse for buying dolls 'I'm buying dolls for my nieces' type things, now I openly admit they're for me. I have a feeling PART of why I collect dolls is because my father threw all mine out before I was emotionally ready for it, and I still to this day think about it, but 90% of why I collect is because they make me happy and we all deserve to be happy, right?
Yes I think collecting dolls should be normalized. I got mean comments about my collection when I was in school. It's really hurting when you're a teenager but gladly I don't care anymore. Doll collectors are the kindest people I've met

Loved this video. I just got into doll collecting this year. My gateway was Birthday Barbies lol and then Rainbow High was my catalyst. I remember being obsessed with monster high when they first came out but refusing to buy any because I thought I was too old to have dolls. I decided to start collecting dolls because they make me happy and remind me of the freedom of imagination from my childhood. Also, I want to go into museum curation to but for history.
Just wanted to share why I got into it. This is going to be all over the place but basically, my interest intersect a lot and fashion dolls fit my interests lol. I love fashion and art - historical clothing, alt fashions, learning about what people wore in different eras ,trends, learning about luxury brands, wearing fancy clothes myself, etc. I honestly hate sewing and making my own clothes, but I absolutely love looking at and examining details on garments and listening to people just talk about fashion or make their own in general. I also watched doll customizers, historical costumers, fashion analysis videos, cosplayers, and people in niche fashion/doll figure collecting communities. Watching their process and hearing them talk passionately about it is fascinating for me. I also love creepy cute Halloween things, theming and high concepts which is probably why I liked Monster High. I never bought any of them when they first released, but I thought they were cute and I enjoyed watching the movies years later when they popped up on Netflix. I'm also interested in collecting anime figures but I can't have 2 expensive hobbies buying clothes AND figures. But now I was at that point where I was content with the clothes in my wardrobe. And I think fashion dolls were perfect because they had cute clothes, made references to real life pieces and eras, were more affordable than let's say, 1:7 scale anime figures and would take up less space. The catalyst to casual collecting was the G3 Monster High release lol. To be honest, there were a lot of good releases the last two months. I'm trying to be selective of who I buy and my wallet is crying a little, but right now I'm happy I joined at such a good time catching good releases and sales. And I just want to say that I love your videos. It's cool that your job and your hobby share similar aspects and that you are passionate about the things you do. It really shows in your content and it's the reason why I subscribed. 🥰
my response to this question has always just been "because it's fun! ✨" and that's it. 😳 i've just never bothered coming up with a more in-depth answer because just as you said - generally hobbies don't need any justification so why would doll/toy collecting? i'm lucky enough to have only received incredibly understanding and tolerating opinions about my hobby but if the time ever came that my harmless affection towards pretty items offended someone, i'd simply ignore them. i'm autistic though so people generally just expect me to be weird and probably think my toy collecting is just an "autistic thing" which fair enough, it may be for me, but kinda sucks if they then judge neurotypical people for having the same hobby... if someone asks me what i do with them i sometimes easily *do* start listing things i barely ever do though (eg. sewing, crafting for them) to make it seem more artsy... which is silly, nothing wrong with simply admiring them and playing with their hair either. i suppose it's less hobby-like but eh, perhaps the "active" hobby part is then hunting for them online and in thrift stores and possible restoration afterwards! plus as you said, information seeking and research is so much fun too! and the community; more than half of the time i spend in the "pullip hobby" is just admiring other people's photography online. ♥️
yess i feel u, my mom doesnt mind it too, she likes the dolls too specially monster high and it was her who started bringing them from village value, so most of my collection of dolls is from there some came complete and good state some came with other outfits etc some dolls i got brand new for like xmas or bday or if they on sale at the store, so my monster highs and ever after highs and barbies and disney princesses and bratz are second hand hihi, ive stopped askin my mom to bring dolls bc i dont have space and they stored rn etc but when she goes to the store she sometimes still brings bags of random clothes and tells me which dolls she saw there, last time i almost thought about goin there myself to get them bc she said the dolls were complete (one i already have but the other i dont) and yeh i just like what i like.. even these newer dolls like the rainbow ones are soooo pretty but im not plannin on startin a new collection hahaha i only started getting those dolls etc when i moved here to canada and my mom was gettin them for me etc.. bc before i didnt have them etc
Why I like dolls?! Girl you described almost everything that I didn't even thought of! Even tho I don't have any dolls that people collect... Only have a Barbie, an Elsa and a porcelain( which people collect😅)... Dolls are like a whole new world! a whole new dimension for me! Like you said just posing them or touching their hair is the BEST feeling in the world! I am guy who's brain is continuously in an imagery world. And dolls are like the living beings in that world. Dolls are such a beautiful crafted art pieces that when I look at them I get happy I get excited! But most importantly I like then because I like them! I think people want us to explain why we collect dolls because dolls are typically thought of as children’s toys. They believe “adults have other more important things to do” with our time. You know, the Christian belief “when I was a child.....but as an adult I put away childish things...”
I understand where you were coming from cuz I am the same way I don't know why I didn't like collecting them I guess because I can give them a story turn them into who I want them to be or secretly make them the ruler of the world that I pretend that they are in I don't understand it myself but to me I love my dolls
I collect dolls that I either a) had as a kid or b) wanted very badly but was "too old" to have dolls at age 12...like. what. 12 is still a kid. But the thing is, as an adult with a day job I've been buying so many dolls that I had to start putting some of them away. My sister asked me recently "Why do you collect toys?" And I responded "why do you crochet or stress-bake?" She said because it makes her happy or calms her in some way. That's the answer I have, and this is for everyone. You do not have to justify anything that makes you happy as long as it isn't harming you or someone else. You have nothing to prove to anyone. You don't need to validate yourself to others. (I also have furbies. So. Many. Furbies.)
I LOVE COLLECTING AND I LOVE UR HAIRSTYLE. I've been collecting for years even if I played with them and lost most their accessories but I never wanted to get rid of them and keep them forever and for the most part I have but some have broke. But i used to be embarrassed of collecting dolls and for years I hid my obsession from like everyone and my family hates my dolls but my mom thinks they are kind of cute lol. But I lost all my friends and I felt like I could finally be free. That I didn't have to hide what I loved. I could be me and now I'm more open about them and show them off to new people I meet and if they don't accept my dolls then I don't need them and their negatively in my life. ❤❤❤❤
Possibly it's the psychology behind it? Some say we already know why we do the things we do, because afterall, we are, it seems, the greatest authority on information about our thoughts, feelings, and motivations. But knowing something about ourselves, accepting something about ourselves, and being comfortable about speaking to others on something about ourselves? These are all different, separate things. But all of these things, it seems, require patience and courage. The leading thought permeating on a lot of fronts, is that self-acceptance and self-confidence(as opposed to arrogance) is a worthwhile pursuit. That the gains of these two accomplishments in self-growth have authentic lasting multi-fold results. But what do I know? I'm just a nerdy person eating cereal in front of a screen. Besides, Hawking's last paper, before he died, was on the probably that our reality is actually a simulation. Maybe it's a toss up. Maybe it's all not real. So just have fun. (Btw maybe your cousin was bewildered and jealous of the luxury of your decadence in self-kindness/self-indulgence, of being able to extend or revisit your child state/childhood. Perhaps your realization of your simple personal dreams caused him to question his own? Everything appears to be a mirror and one is adjusting to one's appearance, one's reflection. I don't really know. Reality is undefined. I can, at best, only guess.

i like to collect dolls because it's fun, I have all of the dolls from my childhood and now I'm buying the ones I wanted but could not afford. I like to buy them second hand and do a little "restoration" so they feel like mine, y'know? It's satisfying to look at my shelf and see all the colorful dresses and little characters there, it brings me joy and they REALLY helped me cope last year, sometimes I would just take a random doll and play with it for a bit, all my problems were gone for those few moments. People never actually said something to my face, but I know they're judging. I didn't buy any of my girls with their money so yeah
I had a deep conversation with myself as to why I like dolls and this the reason why I told myself might be the reason. I was the youngest of 5 and there was a big age gap between my siblings and I. They didn’t want anything to do with me so i began liking dolls early on out of loneliness. As I grew older, I was teased, made fun or, bullied etc from 1st grade on & it really hasn’t stopped. Not so much now that I’m a lot older but people still give me shit. Adolescence up through high school all I ever wanted was to have friends....friends of all kinds..getting along, not being cruel to each other. So I really gravitate towards doll lines like Bratz & Monster High. You got Bratz which are 4 characters, each from a different race & culture but they all get along and are best friends. Monster High is full of monsters that shouldn’t get along but do.. look at Draculaura & Clawdeen, vampires & wolves are natural enemies but in Monster High they can be “beast friends”. So I guess most doll lines have what I never had but always wanted which was a diverse group of friends who all got along and never leave.
im totally with you I think started my toy collection with the g4 my little ponies and then 2015 bratz were a fav of mine. Then I started try and customize them. Now I just love toys and dolls. Like you said I love looking though all the lines and seeing just everything that goes into toy making. In conclusion it just makes me happy.
Some collectors are even shaming other collectors for why they collect. I personally collect bc I treat my collection as an investment, and also it brings my childhood back. I got shamed and called a bad person bc I see money in dolls... well
AND I HAD THE SAME THING! I have my Toralei Campus Stroll Untouched and I got her bc she was rare even in Poland in 2013... value was important to me. Now it is starting to loosen.
Thank you for making this video. I got into dolls too when I discovered Monster High, and it was my everything for years. I stopped collecting right after I turned 15 because I was embarrassed to like dolls and now I'm an adult and I've started collecting again. Boy or girl, there is nothing wrong with doll collecting as a hobby. Dolls are art, they are beautiful, and if people want to laugh at you that's their problem.

Hi my name is Brent and I always wanted to be doll collector since I fell in love with the Bratz in 2005 during the Rock Angelz. Then I fell in love with other dolls such as My Scene, Barbie, OMG Dolls, Monster High, Rainbow High etc. My parents doesn't like me to play with dolls because I'm a young man who is twenty and bisexual. So the only way I get buy some dolls is to move out of my parents house. I know buying is very expensive these days especially on the internet unless there's a cool deal. So I was thinking about my career being an Author and sell my books to the world so I can get some money. Also I was thinking about getting a part time job just in case. I always dream about custom a doll because I'm a big fan watching America's Next Top Model and Project Runway. Plus, I enjoyed watching people custom their own dolls on RUclips and Social Media. I want to practice hairstyles and dye some dolls hairs and mix match their outfits. I always wanted to be a fashion buyer because I love clothes, I love shopping, and I have a taste of fashion. I also wanted to be a photographer to dolls too. Another reason I wanted to be a doll collector is to be myself without people judging me. I deserve to be happy. I want my future partner/lover to support me. Hopefully my wishes do come true in the future.
I love watching your videos im a big fan and this video was very helpful to me because I am a doll collector too who likes to collect disney playsets, but I am afraid that my doll collecting hobby is turning into an obsession. The reason why I say this is because I stress out over toys by gluing them and painting them thinking it's going to solve my anxious thought. But it doesn't it either makes it worse or ends up in the trash. Because of my perfectionist thoughts I have lost many toys and it makes me feel bad. I'm just watching and I've had barbie as a kid and cabbage patch, but this past 2yrs I've decided to collect what I want, I've gotten bratz, monster high, Everafter High, more OG cabbage patch and OG strawberry shortcake dolls. I never had strawberry shortcake dolls as a kid but now as a 48 yr old mom , I find serenity, just cleaning them up, and making them cute, etc. I don't care what people think. If it makes you happy then be happy and collect.

I dont collect but, the items i am getting i have become more interested in games(board games/dolls specifically) and have brought a few because like others have mentioned its fun and i really do think (in fact for everyone no matter what that thing/interest is i think nurturing/feeding your inner ch*ld is so so important) for me Im one of those people who didnt really get a childhood for many many many different reasons i suspect that for me at least at this time in my life its my way of healing and reliving my inner youth i never truly got to have and just be really learn who i am and truthfully heal...
1:52 Yeah, as a male who grew up playing with dolls, and grew up with a lot of "feminine" interests, I faced a lot of adversity because of it, it got so bad that I bagged up my toybox of dolls and got rid of them when I was like 11-12 and it honestly was super upsetting for me. I don't know why theirs a stigma with males playing with/doing "feminine" things, as if any hobby is gendered.
I'm 37 and I started when my 17 yr old daughter was 1 because I wanted to collect American Girls for her to play with when she was older. Well neither of my daughters got into dolls for more than a year or two and now they are almost adults. I fell into the BJD trap in my early 20s and stopped collecting AGs (and got rid of what I had to afford more crac....bjds) I've since returned (albeit slowly) to the AGs and still have my BJDs. I do find that even though I like the jointing, I am more likely to play with my AGs more and I prefer to sew for them. I don't like a big collection as I found myself to be overwhelmed when I had more than 10 bjds and 20 American girls. When it comes to AGs too, I am strictly into the historical dolls (which is why I question why I have Kanani, Kira, #49, #67 and customs) because I love the books. Because I don't like a large collection and I don't want to overwhelm my family with them; I stick strictly to the AGs and BJDs (and I've had to say no more SDs)

Im collecting Winx dolls too and yeah, i was the same, i got my first doll (believix Musa) when i was 9 and around 12 i was really embarrased, i was hiding my dolls and no one can know this XD now im almost 18 and have many dolls, and yeah, they ae out of box, i like just touching them, brushing hair and admire, they are most of the time somewhere on the floor where i can sit to them :D I have no idea what are visitors thinking about me when they come to visit my parents but i dont really care :DD

I used to collect Sailor Moon Cards, Stickers, Pins and even an 3DO CD even though i do not own one. Lol. She always burns them every time she saw them on my room. And I have to keep it on the Roof so she could not reach it. Male Doll Collectors here in the Philippines have problems having dolls cause most of the people aren't that well diversed when it comes to their brains. They're just plain "Girls play Dolls, Boys play Ball" kind of thinking? I dunno. It just sucks when you know, your hobbies aren't they think what you are. I learned to ignore those kinds of people, i stopped talking to them cause it will only end up creating chaos and such lol. Nothing wrong with loving the hobbies you have now? Hobbies are somewhat creates a temporal escape from the harsh realities. It helps you to "breathe" a little, relax, and yeah retaliate and creates a more wider perspective in life? for me I started playing with Barbie dolls,bratz dolls when I was really little, my great aunt collocts glass dolls and other kids of dolls then my cousin who I call my aunt collocts I think the holiday Barbie dolls and other Barbie dolls, then my grandma used to colloct glass dolls and other kinds of dolls aswell, they all played with dolls growing up same with my mom she had a Michaeal Jackson doll as a teenager or young adult. For me playing with dolls,doll collocting and loving dolls it's in my DNA all my life. Then when I was 9 almost 10 I found American girl dolls. I was learning how to read I have chronic illnes and the first couple years of my life I spent in the hospital, so I didn't start to read or anything regarding school stuff until I was around 9 or 10. I did home school but I was behind at a younger grade level. Then I found American girl I got my first doll for Christmas, I saw my doll came with a book, I learned to read though American Girl books My dolls thought me how to read yes I said that right American Girl thought me how to read. Then from then I I started collocting the American girl dolls becaise I wanted to know more about them and I'd read their books and I love them and I still love them and still read the books. For me as long I can remember I've always taken my dolls with me to Doctor apptiments, had them with me when I was in the hospital, played with them after recoving from sugerys. I played with my dolls because that's all I can do becaise I couldn't go out and play because I was always to sick to play with having having chronic illness. I love my dolls becaise they've gone though everything with me from many Doctor apptiments, sugerys, long hospital stays and even all the good time and fun times. Dolls were my first best friend and they hold a Speical plane in my hard expcally American girl dolls becaise they've made me who I am today though their books teaching about friendship,honstest,care in fans so many other countless lesson though th books along with learning my history though the Histocal dolls and their books. That why I love dolls becaise they've always been their for me and have done so much for me like learning how to read and read at age 10 when my doctors told my parents that I wouldn't be able to read and when I did learn how to read at age 10 migjt not mean alor to a lot of people but to me and my family that's something that means alor of me being able to read and know how to read on my own and loving to read is something that my dolls have given me beside being my friend and having them be their for me is why dolls mean a lot to mean and why I love them becaise irs in my blood and they given me so much they teached me how to read and my love of reading.

I think it is sad that collecting plastic dolls (kids dolls) is kind of looked down on, but ceramic doll collecting isn't. I've always preferred the plastic dolls to ceramic ones and people can be really judgy about it, like you are immature or something.
Reasons for doll collecting are different for everyone. I started doing it at a young age. Of course like everyone I started collecting becuase of media and how fun al dolls looked (as kid you really can be into almost any toy line if you wanted to). However, at some point it turned into an addiction with no purpose but to just get the feeling of escapism/comfort during my teenage years cause it was not fun. Eventually I realised what my hobby turned into and I immediately started to downsize my collection and control my collecting tendencies. Now I do not buy my dolls as frequently as I used to and only own those which bring me aesthetic pleasure while matching my doll requirements. I also have a limit for the size of my collection because the more dolls I owned the less each one got my appreciation. But will I ever stop collecting? Probably not. As long as I can I will buy dolls which actually make my heart melt. Those kind of dolls are worth buying for me as I have high expectations. Dolls are mostly made for kids so really finding good ones is not hard for me. And there are not that many of good dolls with a lot of effort put into them so... I kinda do a favour for myself. Not to mention, for people it is normal to collect things. Anyone does it and it may happen without them realising. Some people can even "collect" non-material things. Collecting brings pleasure without harm (as long as it is under control) so why not?
I collect dolls because tiny people are adorable. Also because I'm secretly a sad lonely person who just really wants loyal friends but people are crap and dolls don't turn on you or leave you. And I at some point in my life, I think when I was quite little, I decided to prove all those people who told me I would grow up and grow out of dolls wrong.🙃 In general dolls have always been a big part of my life. When I was little my friends and I would make in-depth stories with our dolls. It was just such a good time. I agree with a lot of the stuff you said too. There is just so much do with them artwise and being able to bring a character you love into the physical world is the best.

im a male collector too but im still a minor and it sucks that i cant buy dolls i want that often. the ones i have are mainly from my childhood and my favs are monster high dolls. i was 5 when they first came out so i basically have some of the ones that came out later. im tryna catch up on them but they're so expensive and i cant afford all of them + my mom sometimes says its childish and i should ask for useful things for my bday/christmas. im scared that when ill be 18 (next year) their prices will be higher and i will never be able to fullfill my dream 🥲

Now I’m 44 and I still collect dolls and mum now understands it and supports me. My line is that the dolls will accrue value as time goes on. I have bought dolls that have gone up then down in price so things tend to balance out. Don’t give up on your dream. Be what you are and enjoy collecting dolls. It’s nothing to do with anyone else and there are a lot of other male collectors out there who will support you as well as female and trans and none binary collectors. Dolls are beautiful pieces of art. I was just thinking how beautiful the Mermaze Mermaidz collection is. The eyes and the accessories are gorgeous. I never really knew why I liked dolls too... I used to play with my bratz like action figures so idk hahahah but also mainly liked to make them look nice and fix up their hair and stuff so a good mixture for me at least
I'm 23 years old and don't really have friends, not a single one. The dolls give me comfort and I don't feel that lonely with them. They're like quiet "friends" to me

My mother in law made fun of me because I collect dolls. She said " oh look at you with your little dolls like a little girl". Then she proceeded to laugh and I laughed with her. I don't really care who judges me some ppl like different things and I don't get it but I respect it. So when people make fun of me I just shrug it off because they just don't get it, but I know I not alone. I'm one of those who personally collects a few dolls/lines I really like. I've always liked fashion dolls since I was a kid. I still love dressing up and doing my dolls' hair for display. Mixing and matching colours and clothes just makes me happy. And for the ones I don't or can't do that for (I have some LEs I personally don't intend to take out of the box and some Trollz in box because if I take them out and display them, my cat steals them), they just make me happy. Dolls are art. Like, you said, a whole team of people had to sit down and design these dolls. From the makeup to the clothing to the shoes, someone had to imagine that. One of my most prized dolls is a custom I got of my favourite Elena of Avalor character (Disney never made her) and she is beautiful. The artists I commissioned (they're sisters) do amazing customs for sale on eBay, for themselves, for commission and they do an amazing job re-painting and re-rooting and making clothes. It blows me away. That stuff is ART. And they're doing what they love for themselves and others!
It just comes down to, for me: It makes me happy. That's it. No bigger, grandiose reason. It makes me happy, makes me smile and makes reality suck a little less. I also find that dressing up my dolls and brushing their hair is relaxing and helps my anxiety.
And I FEEL YOU so hard on the cosplay. I personally only cosplay characters I'm super attached to whether they're popular or not. I know I don't have the best body (working on it) and that I'm sometimes too smol, but I love the characters I chose to play. I want to embody and be them. It's FUN!

I collect dolls because I enjoy it and it's something that brings me joy. I've recently started telling more people that I collect and so far I've gotten good responses, though two did laugh and say 'why do you collect dolls?'. A few years ago I would use my nieces as an excuse for buying dolls 'I'm buying dolls for my nieces' type things, now I openly admit they're for me. I have a feeling PART of why I collect dolls is because my father threw all mine out before I was emotionally ready for it, and I still to this day think about it, but 90% of why I collect is because they make me happy and we all deserve to be happy, right?

Loved this video. I just got into doll collecting this year. My gateway was Birthday Barbies lol and then Rainbow High was my catalyst. I remember being obsessed with monster high when they first came out but refusing to buy any because I thought I was too old to have dolls. I decided to start collecting dolls because they make me happy and remind me of the freedom of imagination from my childhood. Also, I want to go into museum curation to but for history.
Just wanted to share why I got into it. This is going to be all over the place but basically, my interest intersect a lot and fashion dolls fit my interests lol.
I love fashion and art - historical clothing, alt fashions, learning about what people wore in different eras ,trends, learning about luxury brands, wearing fancy clothes myself, etc. I honestly hate sewing and making my own clothes, but I absolutely love looking at and examining details on garments and listening to people just talk about fashion or make their own in general. I also watched doll customizers, historical costumers, fashion analysis videos, cosplayers, and people in niche fashion/doll figure collecting communities. Watching their process and hearing them talk passionately about it is fascinating for me.
I also love creepy cute Halloween things, theming and high concepts which is probably why I liked Monster High. I never bought any of them when they first released, but I thought they were cute and I enjoyed watching the movies years later when they popped up on Netflix.
I'm also interested in collecting anime figures but I can't have 2 expensive hobbies buying clothes AND figures. But now I was at that point where I was content with the clothes in my wardrobe. And I think fashion dolls were perfect because they had cute clothes, made references to real life pieces and eras, were more affordable than let's say, 1:7 scale anime figures and would take up less space.
The catalyst to casual collecting was the G3 Monster High release lol. To be honest, there were a lot of good releases the last two months. I'm trying to be selective of who I buy and my wallet is crying a little, but right now I'm happy I joined at such a good time catching good releases and sales.
And I just want to say that I love your videos. It's cool that your job and your hobby share similar aspects and that you are passionate about the things you do. It really shows in your content and it's the reason why I subscribed. 🥰
my response to this question has always just been "because it's fun! ✨" and that's it. 😳 i've just never bothered coming up with a more in-depth answer because just as you said - generally hobbies don't need any justification so why would doll/toy collecting? i'm lucky enough to have only received incredibly understanding and tolerating opinions about my hobby but if the time ever came that my harmless affection towards pretty items offended someone, i'd simply ignore them. i'm autistic though so people generally just expect me to be weird and probably think my toy collecting is just an "autistic thing" which fair enough, it may be for me, but kinda sucks if they then judge neurotypical people for having the same hobby...
if someone asks me what i do with them i sometimes easily *do* start listing things i barely ever do though (eg. sewing, crafting for them) to make it seem more artsy... which is silly, nothing wrong with simply admiring them and playing with their hair either. i suppose it's less hobby-like but eh, perhaps the "active" hobby part is then hunting for them online and in thrift stores and possible restoration afterwards!

yess i feel u, my mom doesnt mind it too, she likes the dolls too specially monster high and it was her who started bringing them from village value, so most of my collection of dolls is from there some came complete and good state some came with other outfits etc some dolls i got brand new for like xmas or bday or if they on sale at the store, so my monster highs and ever after highs and barbies and disney princesses and bratz are second hand hihi, ive stopped askin my mom to bring dolls bc i dont have space and they stored rn etc but when she goes to the store she sometimes still brings bags of random clothes and tells me which dolls she saw there, last time i almost thought about goin there myself to get them bc she said the dolls were complete (one i already have but the other i dont) and yeh i just like what i like.. even these newer dolls like the rainbow ones are soooo pretty but im not plannin on startin a new collection hahaha i only started getting those dolls etc when i moved here to canada and my mom was gettin them for me etc.. bc before i didnt have them etc

Only have a Barbie, an Elsa and a porcelain( which people collect😅)... Dolls are like a whole new world! a whole new dimension for me! Like you said just posing them or touching their hair is the BEST feeling in the world! I am guy who's brain is continuously in an imagery world. And dolls are like the living beings in that world. I think people want us to explain why we collect dolls because dolls are typically thought of as children’s toys. They believe “adults have other more important things to do” with our time. You know, the Christian belief “when I was a child.....but as an adult I put away childish things...”
I understand where you were coming from cuz I am the same way I don't know why I didn't like collecting them I guess because I can give them a story turn them into who I want them to be or secretly make them the ruler of the world that I pretend that they are in I don't understand it myself but to me I love my dolls
I collect dolls that I either a) had as a kid or b) wanted very badly but was "too old" to have dolls at age 12...like. what. 12 is still a kid.
But the thing is, as an adult with a day job I've been buying so many dolls that I had to start putting some of them away.
My sister asked me recently "Why do you collect toys?" And I responded "why do you crochet or stress-bake?" She said because it makes her happy or calms her in some way. That's the answer I have, and this is for everyone. You do not have to justify anything that makes you happy as long as it isn't harming you or someone else. You have nothing to prove to anyone. You don't need to validate yourself to others. (I also have furbies. So. Many. Furbies.)

I LOVE COLLECTING AND I LOVE UR HAIRSTYLE. I've been collecting for years even if I played with them and lost most their accessories but I never wanted to get rid of them and keep them forever and for the most part I have but some have broke. But i used to be embarrassed of collecting dolls and for years I hid my obsession from like everyone and my family hates my dolls but my mom thinks they are kind of cute lol. But I lost all my friends and I felt like I could finally be free. That I didn't have to hide what I loved. I could be me and now I'm more open about them and show them off to new people I meet and if they don't accept my dolls then I don't need them and their negatively in my life. ❤❤❤❤
Possibly it's the psychology behind it? Some say we already know why we do the things we do, because afterall, we are, it seems, the greatest authority on information about our thoughts, feelings, and motivations. But knowing something about ourselves, accepting something about ourselves, and being comfortable about speaking to others on something about ourselves? These are all different, separate things. But all of these things, it seems, require patience and courage. The leading thought permeating on a lot of fronts, is that self-acceptance and self-confidence(as opposed to arrogance) is a worthwhile pursuit. That the gains of these two accomplishments in self-growth have authentic lasting multi-fold results. But what do I know? I'm just a nerdy person eating cereal in front of a screen. Besides, Hawking's last paper, before he died, was on the probably that our reality is actually a simulation. Maybe it's a toss up. Maybe it's all not real. So just have fun. (Btw maybe your cousin was bewildered and jealous of the luxury of your decadence in self-kindness/self-indulgence, of being able to extend or revisit your child state/childhood. Perhaps your realization of your simple personal dreams caused him to question his own? Everything appears to be a mirror and one is adjusting to one's appearance, one's reflection. I don't really know. Reality is undefined. I can, at best, only guess.

i like to collect dolls because it's fun, I have all of the dolls from my childhood and now I'm buying the ones I wanted but could not afford. I like to buy them second hand and do a little "restoration" so they feel like mine, y'know? It's satisfying to look at my shelf and see all the colorful dresses and little characters there, it brings me joy and they REALLY helped me cope last year, sometimes I would just take a random doll and play with it for a bit, all my problems were gone for those few moments.
People never actually said something to my face, but I know they're judging. I didn't buy any of my girls with their money so yeah
I had a deep conversation with myself as to why I like dolls and this the reason why I told myself might be the reason. I was the youngest of 5 and there was a big age gap between my siblings and I. They didn’t want anything to do with me so i began liking dolls early on out of loneliness. As I grew older, I was teased, made fun or, bullied etc from 1st grade on & it really hasn’t stopped. Not so much now that I’m a lot older but people still give me shit. Adolescence up through high school all I ever wanted was to have friends....friends of all kinds..getting along, not being cruel to each other. So I really gravitate towards doll lines like Bratz & Monster High. You got Bratz which are 4 characters, each from a different race & culture but they all get along and are best friends. Monster High is full of monsters that shouldn’t get along but do.. look at Draculaura & Clawdeen, vampires & wolves are natural enemies but in Monster High they can be “beast friends”. So I guess most doll lines have what I never had but always wanted which was a diverse group of friends who all got along and never leave.

im totally with you I think started my toy collection with the g4 my little ponies and then 2015 bratz were a fav of mine. Then I started try and customize them. Now I just love toys and dolls. Like you said I love looking though all the lines and seeing just everything that goes into toy making. In conclusion it just makes me happy.
Some collectors are even shaming other collectors for why they collect. I personally collect bc I treat my collection as an investment, and also it brings my childhood back. I got shamed and called a bad person bc I see money in dolls... well
AND I HAD THE SAME THING! I have my Toralei Campus Stroll Untouched and I got her bc she was rare even in Poland in 2013... value was important to me. Now it is starting to loosen.

I stopped collecting right after I turned 15 because I was embarrassed to like dolls and now I'm an adult and I've started collecting again. Boy or girl, there is nothing wrong with doll collecting as a hobby. Dolls are art, they are beautiful, and if people want to laugh at you that's their problem.

Not because I'm ashamed that I like dolls but bc I feel like it's waste of money. I think this feeling originated bc my mom never really got why I collect dolls. And my mom plays such a big role in my life that it's hard to just ignore what she thinks. Luckily she's more understanding but still not completely. Even though I love to buy dolls I feel like I don't appreciate them enough. Like I display them and brush their hair and pose them but I just feel like I'm doing this wrong. Then I fell in love with other dolls such as My Scene, Barbie, OMG Dolls, Monster High, Rainbow High etc. My parents doesn't like me to play with dolls because I'm a young man who is twenty and bisexual. So the only way I get buy some dolls is to move out of my parents house. I know buying is very expensive these days especially on the internet unless there's a cool deal. So I was thinking about my career being an Author and sell my books to the world so I can get some money. Also I was thinking about getting a part time job just in case. I always dream about custom a doll because I'm a big fan watching America's Next Top Model and Project Runway. Plus, I enjoyed watching people custom their own dolls on RUclips and Social Media. I want to practice hairstyles and dye some dolls hairs and mix match their outfits. I always wanted to be a fashion buyer because I love clothes, I love shopping, and I have a taste of fashion. I also wanted to be a photographer to dolls too. Another reason I wanted to be a doll collector is to be myself without people judging me. I deserve to be happy. I want my future partner/lover to support me. Hopefully my wishes do come true in the future.
I love watching your videos im a big fan and this video was very helpful to me because I am a doll collector too who likes to collect disney playsets, but I am afraid that my doll collecting hobby is turning into an obsession. The reason why I say this is because I stress out over toys by gluing them and painting them thinking it's going to solve my anxious thought. But it doesn't it either makes it worse or ends up in the trash. Because of my perfectionist thoughts I have lost many toys and it makes me feel bad. Do you ever get asked that you shouldn't have dolls because of your age ? I do because the general idea people have is that toys are for children to play with. What do you think do you have any helpful thoughts ? or advice? .
I'm just watching and I've had barbie as a kid and cabbage patch, but this past 2yrs I've decided to collect what I want, I've gotten bratz, monster high, Everafter High, more OG cabbage patch and OG strawberry shortcake dolls. I never had strawberry shortcake dolls as a kid but now as a 48 yr old mom , I find serenity, just cleaning them up, and making them cute, etc. I don't care what people think. If it makes you happy then be happy and collect.
Judgemental people take up too much room. Just walk away and keep collecting your beautiful dolls. I do and I adore them. I collect other toys and figures too. I dont collect but, the items i am getting i have become more interested in games(board games/dolls specifically) and have brought a few because like others have mentioned its fun and i really do think (in fact for everyone no matter what that thing/interest is i think nurturing/feeding your inner ch*ld is so so important) for me Im one of those people who didnt really get a childhood for many many many different reasons i suspect that for me at least at this time in my life its my way of healing and reliving my inner youth i never truly got to have and just be really learn who i am and truthfully heal...
1:52 Yeah, as a male who grew up playing with dolls, and grew up with a lot of "feminine" interests, I faced a lot of adversity because of it, it got so bad that I bagged up my toybox of dolls and got rid of them when I was like 11-12 and it honestly was super upsetting for me. I don't know why theirs a stigma with males playing with/doing "feminine" things, as if any hobby is gendered.
I'm 37 and I started when my 17 yr old daughter was 1 because I wanted to collect American Girls for her to play with when she was older. Well neither of my daughters got into dolls for more than a year or two and now they are almost adults. I fell into the BJD trap in my early 20s and stopped collecting AGs (and got rid of what I had to afford more crac....bjds)
I've since returned (albeit slowly) to the AGs and still have my BJDs. I do find that even though I like the jointing, I am more likely to play with my AGs more and I prefer to sew for them. I don't like a big collection as I found myself to be overwhelmed when I had more than 10 bjds and 20 American girls. When it comes to AGs too, I am strictly into the historical dolls (which is why I question why I have Kanani, Kira, #49, #67 and customs) because I love the books.
Because I don't like a large collection and I don't want to overwhelm my family with them; I stick strictly to the AGs and BJDs (and I've had to say no more SDs)

Im collecting Winx dolls too and yeah, i was the same, i got my first doll (believix Musa) when i was 9 and around 12 i was really embarrased, i was hiding my dolls and no one can know this XD now im almost 18 and have many dolls, and yeah, they ae out of box, i like just touching them, brushing hair and admire, they are most of the time somewhere on the floor where i can sit to them :D I have no idea what are visitors thinking about me when they come to visit my parents but i dont really care :DD

I collect dolls (even tho I only have three at the moment) because when I was a child I always wanted to have them i adored them thats what I wanted but since I was a boy ofc my parents didn't gave them to me I wasn't into cars nor action figures and I thought they where not for me but I had a sister and I played with her dolls and I actually played with them and I loved them and took care of them but rn my parents are okay with it ig... I used to have a la dee da, a strawberry shortcake, and a mlp equestria girls doll but I gave two away and my mom threw away my strawberry shortcake 1980 doll so now I have to start all over my collection rn is two rainbow high dolls and 1 bratz 20 years im im just 16 so im planning to have a job to collect any doll I could have my hands on because I think every doll is pretty cool Literally when I was little i wanted very doll I've seen in a toy r us lol but yeh thats why I like dolls.

Same.. My parents especially my mom for some reasons can't stand the fact that I have dolls but I just can't resist.. It's litteraly like I need them and idk why it could bother anyone it's my personal collection..

I used to collect Sailor Moon Cards, Stickers, Pins and even an 3DO CD even though i do not own one. Lol. She always burns them every time she saw them on my room. And I have to keep it on the Roof so she could not reach it.
Male Doll Collectors here in the Philippines have problems having dolls cause most of the people aren't that well diversed when it comes to their brains. They're just plain "Girls play Dolls, Boys play Ball" kind of thinking? I dunno. It just sucks when you know, your hobbies aren't they think what you are. I learned to ignore those kinds of people, i stopped talking to them cause it will only end up creating chaos and such lol.
Nothing wrong with loving the hobbies you have now? Hobbies are somewhat creates a temporal escape from the harsh realities. It helps you to "breathe" a little, relax, and yeah retaliate and creates a more wider perspective in life? I don't know the other hobbyist on what's their stands in this issue. But that's for me. for me I started playing with Barbie dolls,bratz dolls when I was really little, my great aunt collocts glass dolls and other kids of dolls then my cousin who I call my aunt collocts I think the holiday Barbie dolls and other Barbie dolls, then my grandma used to colloct glass dolls and other kinds of dolls aswell, they all played with dolls growing up same with my mom she had a Michaeal Jackson doll as a teenager or young adult. For me playing with dolls,doll collocting and loving dolls it's in my DNA all my life. Then when I was 9 almost 10 I found American girl dolls. I was learning how to read I have chronic illnes and the first couple years of my life I spent in the hospital, so I didn't start to read or anything regarding school stuff until I was around 9 or 10. I did home school but I was behind at a younger grade level. Then I found American girl I got my first doll for Christmas, I saw my doll came with a book, I learned to read though American Girl books My dolls thought me how to read yes I said that right American Girl thought me how to read. Then from then I I started collocting the American girl dolls becaise I wanted to know more about them and I'd read their books and I love them and I still love them and still read the books.
For me as long I can remember I've always taken my dolls with me to Doctor apptiments, had them with me when I was in the hospital, played with them after recoving from sugerys. I played with my dolls because that's all I can do becaise I couldn't go out and play because I was always to sick to play with having having chronic illness. I love my dolls becaise they've gone though everything with me from many Doctor apptiments, sugerys, long hospital stays and even all the good time and fun times. Dolls were my first best friend and they hold a Speical plane in my hard expcally American girl dolls becaise they've made me who I am today though their books teaching about friendship,honstest,care in fans so many other countless lesson though th books along with learning my history though the Histocal dolls and their books. That why I love dolls becaise they've always been their for me and have done so much for me like learning how to read and read at age 10 when my doctors told my parents that I wouldn't be able to read and when I did learn how to read at age 10 migjt not mean alor to a lot of people but to me and my family that's something that means alor of me being able to read and know how to read on my own and loving to read is something that my dolls have given me beside being my friend and having them be their for me is why dolls mean a lot to mean and why I love them becaise irs in my blood and they given me so much they teached me how to read and my love of reading.
After 5 years into me collocting American Girl dolls I found RUclips and AGTube. I learned how to take care of my dolls. I then found the huge commounty of doll collocts and I started making my own videos on RUclips as well. From doll Unboxing, reviews and other stuff even my own doll series and other fun doll videos. I think it is sad that collecting plastic dolls (kids dolls) is kind of looked down on, but ceramic doll collecting isn't. I've always preferred the plastic dolls to ceramic ones and people can be really judgy about it, like you are immature or something.

Reasons for doll collecting are different for everyone. I started doing it at a young age. Of course like everyone I started collecting becuase of media and how fun al dolls looked (as kid you really can be into almost any toy line if you wanted to). However, at some point it turned into an addiction with no purpose but to just get the feeling of escapism/comfort during my teenage years cause it was not fun. Eventually I realised what my hobby turned into and I immediately started to downsize my collection and control my collecting tendencies. Now I do not buy my dolls as frequently as I used to and only own those which bring me aesthetic pleasure while matching my doll requirements. I also have a limit for the size of my collection because the more dolls I owned the less each one got my appreciation.
But will I ever stop collecting? Probably not. As long as I can I will buy dolls which actually make my heart melt. Those kind of dolls are worth buying for me as I have high expectations. Dolls are mostly made for kids so really finding good ones is not hard for me. And there are not that many of good dolls with a lot of effort put into them so... I kinda do a favour for myself.
Not to mention, for people it is normal to collect things. Anyone does it and it may happen without them realising. Some people can even "collect" non-material things. Collecting brings pleasure without harm (as long as it is under control) so why not?
