Save yourself listening to the entire podcast, the last 3 minutes are the most important. If you are even more lazy, following is the summary of the entire podcast.
    1. Yes, we (Pakistan) started a Neutral observer analysis and Court of Arbitration simultaneously. This is because we do not trust Neutral observer due to a bad ruling in the Baglihar project.
    2. Dispute resolution mechanism be damned - we will do what we want because we lost one case. Yes, we are being a baby, we want a favourable ruling and we will go anywhere we get a favourable ruling.
    3. India cannot do anything, they should accommodate us because we are the baby.
    4. Let us discuss the history of treaty, blah blah blah
    5. What can be done to improve the treaty - I don't know, because I do not have the expertise. So I will make some sh*t up regarding climate management, rights of Kashmiris. Never mind that the 3 rivers are from Kashmir and they cannot use any of it right now.

The Indus Water Treaty gives 80% water to Pakisyan and 20% to India. Nowhere else in the world does a lower riparian get that much. A poor India was armtwisted by World Bank to sign a highly unfair treaty because at that time Pakistan was in western camp.
Nehru was greatly criticized and in his defense he said that the treaty will guarantee peace between the two countries. Did it? Pakistan started 3 overt wars (1965, 71, 99) and two proxy wars (Kashmir, Khalistan) plus many other terror attacks including our parliament, 26/11 etc.
India never violated the treaty even during the war. Instead of being super grateful for that, Pak anchors accuse India of stealing water.
Pretty darn foolish to be over generous and still be accused of theft. Time to review the treaty and bring in line with other treaties across the world.

Indus water system has 6 major rivers the Beas, Ravi and Sutlej with a mean annual flow of 41 billion m3 (33 million acre⋅ft) - to India, while control over the waters of the three "western rivers" - the Indus, Chenab and Jhelum with a mean annual flow of 99 billion m3 - to Pakistan. India has about 20% of the total water carried by the Indus system while Pakistan has 80%."
you would be like that is unfair pakistan gets 80%? we should back off from this unfair deal at once.
Reminder in river water politics there's always one above you/the place where the river originates, what do i mean by that?
Brahmaputra river for instance, we have been in dispute with the chinese for decades now, if we block off or back off from the treaty that would give chinese the excuse to do the same with us in case of the Brahmaputra river.
would recommend you to look in River Nile politics surrounding Egypt and Congo.
Things aren't as easy as we can just move away from the deal.

@@Ryujiaisaka02 you seem to be as clueless as this lady. China does not have any such treaty with India and is already building dams that will reduce eastern rivers flows to India. The percentage of water that China gives to India is exactly what India should be negotiating for is the point many are making. China currently gives less than 50 percent while India gives 80 percent. China shares zero water data with India since no treaty while India under the treaty shares all water data with pak. Please read and comment. Don’t assume water experts from India to be stupid for last 40 plus years. Nehru also gave today equivalent of 650 crore to pak as a gesture and 80 percent water AND said this is a goodwill gesture as to avoid any enmity ..we know how much the gesture mattered,

Let me add some points that were conveniently forgotten by the "expert".
    1. The first dispute resolution mechanism is the neutral expert (in case the countries couldn't settle dispute within themselves) unless both countries agree to skip neutral expert. In this scenario, since India hasn't agreed to skip neutral expert, WB can't appoint the Court of Arbitration before neutral experts gives his/her decision.
    2. No discussion on what impact new technologies have on the treaty. New ways to build dams, to de silt etc.
If you don't have an honest discussion, you will not be able to fight on this issue on international stage.

One hour and not one facts and figures . One number . absolutely none .all vague adjectives. It is not a difficult discussion . This is what happens . India gets x percent pak gets y percent .India wants this change while will make it x+a for India and y-a for Pakistan ... Instead of that no real data except vague statements like India gets substantial water from these three rivers .
You always say half of your viewers are indians . Do you know why ..because we want to see both sides of the coin and understand why and how of everything. Even on a booring topic like indus water treaty.

Uzair, be honest please….do you have more clarity on IWT now after this 1 hour exposition by this ‘expert’?
See, this is a symptomatic problem in Pakistan, that of intellectual honesty. This lady tied herself into knots and was as clear as mud, simply because she did not want to admit these core points of the IWT:
    1. That it’s a generous agreement by an upper riparian. No such river treaty exists in the world that has so much being gifted to the lower riparian state. (She did not even mention this in passing).
    2. That India has been serious about managing its water and has slowly, and in the last twenty years, rapidly, built the infra around it. In contrast Pakistan has been incompetent every step of the way.
    3. India has been meticulous in keeping the data around all aspects of IWT. Pakistan has not, and it still borrows data points from India to make its own reports to this day. (Again the lady said nothing about this fundamental issue).
    4. India now wants to seek an agreement where it can claim more waters from the western rivers because the demography has changed in India and it needs more water to support its increased agri and industrial usage. Besides, it despises the way Pakistan wastes its fresh water. This claim that India will make will have support from the international orgs because all existing water treaties are actually far more tilted towards the upper riparian state than the IWT. Hence, what India will demand will be more a norm than an exception, and it will be able to cite the data from existing water treaties.
None of this was discussed but this ridiculously prolix woman.

Congratulations and Thanks for a detailed and informed coverage of IWT.
However, any 101 on IWT must at least must mention that Pakistan did not sign IWT FOR FREE.
    1. INR 6,153,000,000 India gave to Pakistan for signing the treaty, not as a loan, but as a GRANT (AID).
    2. The Huge GRANTS (AID) given to Pakistan by USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand and West Germany.
    3. The only two big dams Pakistan has built since its CREATION were an outcome of Pakistan signing this treaty.
    4. About Pakistan's rights, and what PERCENTAGE of water Pakistan gets under IWT as the lower riparian in comparison to other such International River Water Treaties - like Amazon and Nile river water treaties. Pakistan is allotted more share of the water than other lower riparians.
    5. India has never taken a dispute for resolution.
    6. Every time Pakistan has taken the dispute for Resolution it has FAILED in its contentions.
    7. But, every time Pakistan has taken the dispute for resolution it has caused INORDINATE DELAYS in the completion of Indian projects. As a result of which India has had to suffer HUGE FINANCIAL LOSS.
    8. Every time India starts new project permitted by IWT Pakistan takes the matter for resolution on FRIVOLIOUS ground - such cause India damage.
    9. Pakistan's approach can be summed as: We will not do anything but we will not let you do anything.

    1) Maxico gets a 90% OR claims river/water treaty with the USA..
    2) India can claim the river without having a treaty with the Chinese... which flows from Tibet
    3) Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia can claim the Mekong river with china...
That's not the case in the real world big countries squash smaller countries demand... But still 90% water awarded treaty exists between India and Pakistan.

Whenever India tried to build hydel power projects on western rivers to enable it to use its full share of water, Pakistan objected to it by going for arbiration where it would lose the case but would delay Indian projects by decades. All this while Pakistan has been getting more than its share of water. It is even getting Indian share of water.Thst way Pakistan has been violating Indus Water treaty all these years. we should also consider the fact that a project planned from Indian side is delayed for decades by pakistan. Then it goes to international courts and India gets permissions to do what it planned but who shall beaar the cost of delays and esclations. This way pakistan who isnt trying to develop infra on its side of the border tries to delay development on the other side. So I think India wants to set new sections in the treaty for the same. It sent notice so that pak comes to the table and considering events of past if it isnt made time bound, pak would use any tactics possible to delay this as well.

One question comes in my mind that why Pakistan did not build enough HPPs/ Dams to utilise available water and even today significant amount of water flows through Pakistan and terminates in Arabian sea without much of utilisation. Is this the reason the opinion of neutral expert or arbitrator is going against Pakistan? I sincerely hope this matter should be resolved amicably.

I am so glad I came to the comment section 20 minutes into it. What an absolute waste of time, she decides to talk about everything but the treaty itself. Typical pakistani guest that feels India and the world owes pakistan something. Lets understand this more clearly.
    1. Pakistan gets 80% of the water and India gets 20% of it which never happens in a lower riparian county. Its the exact opposite across the world with higher riparian countries getting majority of water. Yet Erum constantly asserts that pakistan is "owed" 80% of the water. Its not.
    2. She goes around everything from history, spirit, climate, etc but barely discusses the treaty itself. She then goes on to accuse India of stealing water because India built dams and infrastructure which pakistan has left no stone unturned to stop stalling the projects by decades.
    3. Zero solutions suggested in the mindless discussion.
    4. India has given a notice not a "so called notice". The despondency her perspective and the choice of words is so clear.
I am sometimes bedazzled by how disingenuous pakistani commentators can actually are. I constantly search into the pakistani content to find some amount of genuineness but am constantly met with anything but condescension, entitlement, absurdity or excuses. This podcast is the one in which all four are displayed outrageously.
But I have to admit there is something to admire about pakistanis, it takes balls (or a total lack of self respect) to be seeking so many concessions from the country that they claim to be their sworn enemy.

There is not a single point mentioned about generosity of the Indian side maintaining the treaty work even after the 80% water is of Pakistan usage and still there is treaty initiator(India) manipulated.... wow...

I don't mean to be disrespectful but it's hard to make sense of what she is speaking even for a person like me who has a background in this topic. Start with an overview, then dive into the details depending on your audience and then move to summarize/comments & DON'T DIGRESS.
The crux of the topic: Pakistan benefits 80%+ from the treaty in terms of the volume of water flow & yet the country suffers water problem ONLY because of it's poor management. Now Pakistan is opposing dam constructions & has overiden the arbitration process. India has responded and issued a notice, not a so-called notice.
Why blabber for over 30 min when you can wrap it up in 3 sentences?

Yes, it seems she cannot answer any question directly without deviating. Anyway, pakistan should have developed its water management building dams, hydro electric power etc. But they pour all their money into the military and the poor suffer.

Is rising sea level not responsible for impacting Delta's world over, diverting Indus has lesser impact, internal problems in Pakistan are more politically motivated than water related, at the end Pakistan has to better manage their water resources.
