Bad Apple!! (Shadow-Art vs. 3D Models) Side-By-Side Comparison

- Disclaimer: I DID NOT MAKE EITHER ONE OF THIS. I SIMPLY PUT THEM SIDE BY SIDE. ALL CREDIT GOES TO THE ORIGINAL CREATORS.
I just put them together for people who would like to see what an excellent job the MMD modelers/posers did in syncing the MMD version to the original shadow-art video.
Bad Apple comparison video, Left is the original shadow-art, right is the updated 3d model one using MikuMikuDance (which is an amazing program). Also, I apologize because the encoding seems to have left some flickering artifacts at the bottom of the screen, but there seems to be nothing I can do about that aside from upgrading to a better computer which can handle video editing better.

I honestly had no idea the color version was re-animated from scratch, the first time I saw it I had assumed that it was just the original without the black-and-white filters applied. That honestly makes it more impressive to me, that someone was able to re-create the original so accurately.
you are the only one to appreciate this so far

Finally, someone else who realised that
I mean it’s done in MMD so it’s most likely just traced, rather than being completely from scratch
True, and this would also explains why the expressions seems stale. I mean they made the animation for scratch cut them some slack (to the people saying the expressions are bland). Honestly a lot of work probably went into this and it is really cool
While everyone's here criticizing the 3d model, I'm just trying to see who the silhouettes represent xD
Same lol

as much as i love the original, i have to appreciate the effort that went into recreating it scene-by-scene from scratch in MMD. animation is hard, and both animators shown here pulled it off well.

People need to understand the difference between fair/constructive criticism/personal opinions and attacking someone
They are both good, both praiseworthy, and I can still say the one without colors is better. It's smoother and more stylish, and the transitions are designed to use the lack of color.
The colored one isn't bad just because the original is better. It is tempting but illogical to think that way.
Holy fuck?!? The 3D one was done in MMD! That's incredible! I can barely animate a walking motion... The person who did this is extremely talented!
And both are amazing. Neither are superior.. people need to stop saying "The shadow one is better". It's not better, it was made by a professional. It doesn't make it better. Both are equally amazing and took a good amount of time to make.
I agree with ya there. They are equally impressive.
+立黄 ikr :3 both are lovely pieces of artwork.
The only thing is that the colored ones need a little trimming down because they are noticeably different on occasion. Looks like a few of 'em spent some time having lots of tamales for dinner. XD

YEAH LOL I DIDNT KNOW WHAY TOUHOU WAS BACK THEN I
Looking back at this, I can *definitely* say that I can name all of these characters, lol
Kudos to the person who busted their ass, reanimating the entire music video from scratch.
For real. I'm attempting something similar for a different game and even with really good tools, there's SO many little touches in the original that are extremely difficult to copy.
Today I learned that Reimu was actually facing front in the beginning
I still don't see that on the silhouetted version tbh
I’ve always seen her facing front, it just occurred to me that you could interpret it the other way
In think the 3D video was meant to show who the character's are in color... Or something. This looks like something I would do for fun (not saying it's bad tho).
I think the coloured one was the original version of the black and white version
@@kfcdog1 BnW is from 2009, the colored one from 2011 if i'm not mistaken.
I thank that too. Ppl are taking it too seriously what if the creator just wanted to have fun

Yeah, for non-fans I think this is a great way for them to learn what the characters look like and thus making them decide if they want to learn more about it or nah😌
Some things look better black and white, this is one of them
Nah.
It's just that the non shadow art version of this has really bad models and the motions are a bit off. If you replaced the models and got a a better animator, it would look better.
+P0keTheArtist probably would, but the transitions will still roll a little smoother in black and white
True...

Racism is also one of them
The colored version was really just made so others could see what the colors, or for me, what the characters look like. Both are pretty cool to watch.
People are just talking about how they like the shadow version better, honestly I kinda feel sad that the creator must have worked hard on this but the others just ignored it.
I was thinking about that too
I only watched this to understand what is going on
I agree.. This whole comment section is basically a lore of "im14andthisisdeep" comments. "Shadow art is better" "BnW version better concept art beautiful" blah blah blah.. People don't understand that this version was only made for curiosity of how the original might look like before post processing fx. This was never made to compete with the original to begin with. Props to the niconicodouga people for the effort.
Yeah I agree, I can here just to see the characters, but all the criticism about how it looks compared to the original just makes me sad. Like imagine how many times they have to rewatch it, and animating it as closely as possible. I don’t know how long this took, but the 3D is well done.
Yeahhh ikr, if they want to critic much why bother remains in this video
I personally like the shadow one better, not because the MMD one is a bit choppy, but it ruins the imagination. The shadow one allows the viewer to imagine the character and what emotions they are having, adding a sense of intrigue and mystery. The MMD one takes that away and puts a face on the characters. It can be done well, but the emotions on the MMD aren't expressed so it feels flat.
the shadow art are the characters from the touhou project. the 3d models are touhou project characters who have personalities and traits given to them. what are you even getting at?
Mioda Ibuki They are the same models, but one you can see everything and the other shrouded in playful mystery. Basically what you said, the 3d models already have a personality and traits. Because of that, it makes it less fun. In the shadow one, you can come up with your own personalities and traits for them. Essentially making you THINK more then just showing you outright.
Mioda Ibuki *sign*, i guess some people just don't understand artistic value and can only see what's in front of them. So sad :(
why make something "artistic" when its clearly already concrete omg
its like looking at the time and going "oh its actually two powerful lines with two meaningful dots followed by two supreme circles" instead of saying "11:00"
like please. theres a place for that
Mioda Ibuki I'm refering to the 3d model one as concrete, but the shadow one is up for interpretation. It's my opinion, but I do respect your opinion too. Let's just leave it at that

The thing about the colors is that it ruins the illusion of the transitions that the black and white has.
but its nice to know who was behind the shadow
@@lyanismagestic4632 I agree with that.
@@lyanismagestic4632 but it's not the same characters that are in the shadow and in the colors there's obvious differences in their shape and sizes from the shadow version to the colored version so your statement doesn't cut it xD
@@eternalchamp3882the original video is 3d but removing the color makes it difficult to see what's there due to the lack of depth cause the color was the one giving the image depth and a sense of what is separateing what from, again due to the lack of color. So to combat that, he made it 2D so that depth is not necessary and due to the original vertion's constant panning around that camera it would make it hard to understand wtf is happening so he just removed the panning.(Or you know he just moved it to the side a little cause like if you turn the girl around a little bit at this time 0:11 you would see that it's almost identical)Idk that's just my opinion
I forgot to mention that some things are different like the cup falling and the castle has been modified to rather make it look more detailed with the black and white or make things easier during the production of this film/video or whatever
shadow version is much more fluent

am I the only one that liked the silhouettes better? I'm not saying the video was bad it was amazing I just didn't expect them to look like that
+Alejandro Beltran I think that it's just because when you see the silhouettes, they seem a lot more articulated and flexible, as the 3D models aren't programmed as well as the silhouettes would be or are, I don't know if you used a program and then converted it into black and white or... But none the less, I think both videos were good, but the black and white original was better.
+Alejandro Beltran Because they are different. It's obvious they're different from the movement and the details.
+Lumina The Dream Demon I'm not a fan of Touhou (just a neutral), but I have done animation, the 3d model one (minus B&W) doesn't have any editing at all and the source 3d models were pulled from are on default with the non B&W side.
The Silhouettes 3D were actually fixed from hair, clothing, body shape so that they'll appear more proportional and have fluidity when programmed because the models on the right are a bit clunky (even with good programming). If the animator didn't edit the models and fix them, they'll appear less proportional since look at the 3D model side, each model *are* different which mean it came from more than one actual source. For example, there were some with very clunky hair and others had more smoother more hair in the video. It's normal for any 3D animator to fix any model so they look more fluid when they program it. A lot of MMD 3d have done this too to models they've used.
Even with a good programming, the models in shadow art filtering will still look the same but with the shadow play effect.
Literally every other comment was bashing on the 3D one TF

To all the people getting mad at each other. Yall acting like you just came out the womb pls. Art can be perceived differently we aren’t the same person.
the fact the colored version was made from scratch. just wow
I think why the shadow art version flows better is because, since they are just silhouettes, there are more ways to seamlessly join the scenes and objects and animated a transformation between them that look stylistic. When you show what's happening behind the curtain, it's harder to show transformation between objects, as seem from 0:48 to 0:51 when the knife turns into part of a costume - the MMD one has to compensate for the change of color and the obvious change of object, while with the shadow art they are just silhouettes so you can merge the two shapes together and no one notices.
Also, there is the issue of emotion. Bear in mind that the silhouette shows less facial expression, because, well, the characters are silhouettes - then again, there is a lack of song-related sadness in the MMD one.
The fact that the animator of the MMD version was able to find ways to flow between scenes made that version very impressive for me. I still prefer the shadow art one, to be honest, and I commend whoever came up with the concept.
I like the Shadow Art side simply because the transitions feel more natural.
keep in mind the 3d animation was made 10+ years ago - how amazing.

The shadow art is much better in the details, the 3D models look pretty damn ugly when you look at the dresses, hair, movements and character models (like the smile on Scarlet for example).

No, no, no! I don't agree! Not at all! Those 3D models don't look ugly! Your wrong! Somebody had spent all making them. Let's see you do better! I bet you even can't! Keep your darn rude opinions to yourself!
Selena Ervin To me it just look like pre-made vocaloid characters someone made the best they can do to copy the movements of the shadow art. Its most likely they/him/she didn't even do the character models themselves, and that is probably why they are so out of sync with the movements (like creepy smiles (because they look unnatural), cliping errors, stiff faces and so on.).
Also criticism isn't being rude, criticism is something that is required to improve yourself as that tell you what is good and what is bad. Anyone that actually know the value of criticism will praise it and not condemn it, to condemn it without even knowing what it is for (the thing you are doing) is being rude.
Your comment was criticism? I couldn't tell. XC
I'm really sorry. I did not know it was criticism. Oh and the characters are actually Touhou characters. (Touhou is a Japanese PC game if you do not know what it is.)
Selena Ervin Ofc I know what Touhou is, I should play them if they stoped having 15 fps when my computer say "wait are you sure you are not idle?".
Vocaloid is a program where a lot of videos like this are made, I should expect that these characters can be used in that program making them touhou-vocaloid characters within that program.
The transition is more smooth than every musicaly transition

I like the shadow better. the shadow art is easier to manipulate and more fluid. like at.2:52, the doll turns into that girl a little more natural that in the MMD. also I think its a little more fun to use the body langue your provided with to think up the expression and emotion that would be on there faces. some of the emotion seemed a bit weird to me on the MMD. like at 0:38 I thought her expression would be different, I didn't think she should be smiling. it takes the poetic, artistic, metaphoric element out. I liked that they were shadows, but I understand some people want faces and like this mmd. its not a bad mmd, someone imagined these expressions and worked very hard to make this, I just personally prefer the shadows because everyone sees something different, and I like that. the fluidity is much better than it could have turn out, its just tricky software. I'm actually amazed how some of the transformations turned out (like the fire part) but since its not as easy to manipulate as the shadow art it is bound to not have as natural transformations and fluidity.
I was scared to see how they would show objects morphing into people in the 3D version
OK CAN I JUST
I LOVE THE VERSION U MADE SO MUCH BETTER!! YOU DID SUCH A GREAT JOB !!!!!
The colored one? Ah, that’s not theirs btw the original one is... :
妖夢のとこめっちゃかっけー!
松野チョロ松 凄く同感。
松野チョロ松
日本人がいた喜び
それな
それな
松野チョロ松 それ思た てかやっと日本人見つけたァww
I agree that the silhouette version is better. Not because of its animation quality, but because the coloured version loses a lot of the lyrical meaning. "Fading to white" and "turn to black" mean nothing anymore. There's a lot of good/evil self-discussion that the white and black characters represent, *especially* with the ying-yang symbolism that bright, cheery colourfulness can't catch.
***** Finally someone who says something more than "I like the B&W one better"
This is seriously good work!
People out here forgetting this was a decade ago
The shadow version is better. There's people who say the MMD version (the 3D one) has better animation. I don't see how is that possible :-/
I mean, the animation is pretty well made for a MMD project, but the shadow version has the characters moving in a smooth and realistic way.
I know this comment is old but the reason for comments like that is because of people like you who are unappreciative
2:15
Shadow ver.: Normal
3D ver.: THICC
Im impressed how he figured out everu single caracter out of only the shadow
This is honestly amazing
The black and white one is like a ying yang
The shadows art is better.
it's not same videos, look for example to knife 0:48. 3-d part was made by other ppl's and not best, as they can be
hapylestat you are right cuz they are differ in channels
bad apple is the best shadow art video
hapylestat Let's see you do better
Emílía Myrra '-'
Before I had no idea who the characters were but now I know what and how they look like in color and made it easier for me to recognize their silhouettes.
Every aspect of this entire project is incredible. It's obvious that an unimaginable amount of work and dedication went into it all. Don't even get me started on R/place.
you could say this entire touhou project
The shadow version is better who agrees with me? :D
even this young pup agrees with u :p
Johnny Neeson I do like the shadows, but the colors are nice.
Johnny Neeson me
Johnny Neeson me but the mmd Version is awesome
The shadow version feels more correct, as it's the original.
this was the longest 3 minutes ive spent
This really is Perfect Timing.
Loved the animation. ❤
Holy mother of god...both of them are incredible
I know 3d modeling can be difficult, but I'm under the impression that the developer is a chubbychaser now.
Not really sure what you're getting at.
Can't seem to see any chubby characters in there if that's what you're going for.
Sure, some of them might not have the same proportions as the original designs.
But since the original designs have about as much body fat as an average african child, I'd say that doesn't really cut it :Y
Proportions are larger then they should on the child like characters like Remilia and Flandre and remained consistant with adult, short characters as well
Kayana Koe I am sorry but Remilia and Flandre are not Children. They are more than 100 years old. Their freaking vampires! Why do you mean the need an adult and other short characters? Just because short characters are short does not mean they are children and should have an adult with them.
sw1101323 The point is they LOOK like children. They have the body shape of a child. Regardless of how old they really are.
Totally agree with you, I was thinking the same thing while watching this.
I'm attempting to remake this for a video game, and even with really good tools, there's SO many little touches in the original that are extremely difficult to copy. Like at 0:13 Marisa catches the apple while spinning with her arm out, else her clothes/broom would show in the shot. At 0:23 the zoom-in is actually a transition that hides both marisa's broom, and the stars. At 0:36 Remilia moves with the camera but at a different pace. Literally everything with Youmu, like sheathing the sword is so difficult, but also the tree at 1:02 spins independently from the camera so it feels more like a swivel. Every camera angle change is really more complex than it seems and usually moves while tilting a small amount.
Also many of the girls are doing this odd sidestepping dance where they also move their torso's and shoulders to the beat. You can see Reimu do it at 0:02, Patchy at 0:28, Yuyuko at 0:59, and Kanako at 2:13. It is fluid and EXTREMELY difficult to copy. It's a masterpiece, and yet it was done close to 15 years ago.
Happy 10 year anniversary of this masterpiece!
This is so cool omg thank you for making this
