- With more and more grasslands being converted to farmland and an ever increasing population density, Elephant crop raids are becoming more and more common In Africa - damaging up to 70 percent of all crops in some areas. With their Livelihood at risk, farmers often have little chance but to use spears against them, injuring and potentially killing the elephants. In recent years, however, one somewhat unorthodox method found more and more success in protecting farmland and because it is a lot less harmful it is now helping to save elephants lives.

As we all know it's a myth that elephants are scared of mice, for why would an animal that large be scared of something that small? Ironically enough elephants are scared of an animal 10x smaller than mice. As you would've guessed, elephants are deathly afraid of bees. Conservationists along with farmers have recently discovered this phobia of bees and took advantage of it. Throughout Africa farmers place beehives around their crops like a border to protect them from elephant raiders. I wouldn't blame elephants since bees sting. Hell I myself am deathly afraid of bees, along with anything else that has the ability to sting. In conclusion chili is not the only alternative to repel elephants from raiding crops.
Bees would also benefit the crops, and produce honey which the humans could take small portions of without hurting the bees...Bee farms in these areas would actually be a really smart idea. Good comment.
It would suck to be the poor bastard who has to get the new hive in the first place though, I doubt they have high tech bee protection in Africa.

Plus it doesn’t solve the situation of us humans using up more land to feed ourselves, reducing the places for elephants to eat. This is perhaps a very short-term solution to ward them off, but a starving elephant might just risk it if they have nothing else nearby to eat.

The issue I have with this video is that it only solves half of the problem and only looks directly at remedying the immediate symptoms of elephants stealing farmers crops. It doesn't however, look for the root cause in an attempt to fix the bigger issue. There's a reason WHY elephants would take the risk of coming so close to human's homes and stealing food from them. The most probable reasons are because of: a) Climate Change and b) land/territory loss due to human encroachment. This leads to a reduced food supply and naturalloss of territory, which can cause Elephants to starve out in the wild. If they can't find food or space where they normally would live, then they feel they have no other choice than to invade human settlements.
Blacks in Africa have a tendency to reproduce a lot.
They came close to humans for survival just like the humans are trying to stop them for survival. Its just nature. Animals all fighting for their food. Elephants live near all kind of other predatory animals to fight for food and space and they're just doing the same thing with us.

I really appreciate this story. Wildlife preservation is vital, but if we don't respect the human cost, it will fail. People need to eat and feed their children. They'll naturally do anything to accomplish those goals and never willingly sacrifice their own survival for somebody else's ideal.
Conservation efforts will always be more successful if human needs are taken into account. Win/win.

At first i thought that chile condoms were actually real but now i see what they actually meant
When I saw condoms in the title I immediately made the link with birth control, assuming these condoms protected elephants by reducing population growth and therefore reducing population pressures on their natural habitat.
This reminded me of what my friend did when deer had continuously eaten her small farm/garden. She loved animals but had to protect her food.
She accidentally found a salutation though chilli peppers of some variety. The deer as always went to eat and one got a nasty surprise when it ate a hot pepper.
She claimed it went crazy, foamed at the mouth and wandered off, the herd following. She says it ended up okay but they don't mess with the farm no more.
(She called the doe 'halfear' due to one of the ears being torn. If that explains how she could tell it was the same deer.)
At first I though “annoying elephants”, then, after seeing the elephant being injured by the spears and all that blood coming out from it, I actually felt sorry for it haha

Poachers have no idea of the paradox they are making. Elephants are poached for money but each elephant that dies, the less ivory and the less chance of them getting money. Eventually poachers will run out of elephants to kill and have nothing to sell. Basically, poaching eventually makes it unable to poach.

Bee gates are another way. Farmers keep bees in a box. Elephants are terrified of bees and their hum. People attach boxes of bees (this does not hurt them, because they can get in and out, and they make hives) to fences. When elephants get near the farm to raid, they hear the hum and run away, not harming the elephant.
