We started eating better when President Reagan cut taxes.
In the early 80s, we were a lower middle class single income household. Mom was very young and didn’t know how to cook at all, so Franco-American (before Campbell’s bought them out) SpaghettiOs WITH MEATBALLS (the meatballs were a MUST) were a staple and a delicious godsend. I LOVED the meatballs and still do even at 48 years old. All this being said, my Italian friends unanimously agreed that SpaghettiOs and Chef Boyardee were abominations that would never be allowed in their house let alone served. I understand that from a cultural standpoint, but I’m not Italian and it was an inexpensive go-to that helped mom feed her kids when she had no idea what to serve.
I am 62 and remember begging my mother to get a can of this when we went food shopping. I definitely will make this for my grandchildren so they can appreciate good food
At 56, I've learned what good pasta is. At 12, when I didn't want another sandwich or hot dog, this hit the spot. Yes, it's sweet, but the meatballs add a savory, salty component. I always added parmesan too (back then from the green can). Even then, I knew it wasn't great food, but sometimes good enough is good enough. Love your channel!! Can't wait to try your "adult" version.
Honestly, an instant favorite of yours. Super creative and innovative to take a nostalgic childhood food and turn it pro (I wasn't allowed to eat Spaghetti O's but did at friend's houses).

This is why I love this CHANNEL!!!!!!!! I did not eat spaghettios as a kid. My mom just made her spaghetti meat sauce and if we were lucky and she was in a good mood real meatballs and baked spaghetti. OMG! So good. Now, for emergency preparedness reasons I bought a can. YUCK! Horrid. Now, during COVID I worked insane hours so needed quick but tasty recipes. On Pinterest, I found a much quicker recipe for spaghettios and it is my go too when I don't have time for the full on production. Maybe I can find the label online and print it and make it and put in cans. (You almost had me get in trouble at work....stifle laughter at the beginning.)
Growing up in the northeast in an Italian American family my mother would not only never allow this stuff in the house, but I was also forbidden to eat it at friends houses too.
Introducing the $10 can of Spaghetti O's. Agreed, the recipe is probably awesome as everything else is on this channel, but it misses the point of what problem Spaghetti' Os solves. It has always been economy food, shelf stable, quick and easy to prepare, and enjoyed by those without refined palets. With the time and budget, of course I would make this recipe any day of the week.... in fact I think I wil this weekend!
I’m sure you absolutely make it better. However, as with scrapple, I grew up eating spaghettio’s and the taste is definitely sub par, yet it takes me back to happier times as a child with my mom. I eat it right out of the can today! Lol
I love this...back in the day spagettos were made with real beef...and as a kid in the 70s these were great for a quick lunch with garlic bread...now I agree today's can is pure evil...your version is awesome! UH HO Super Steve cool Spaghettios
This is the exact kind of cool little stuff you keep coming up with that keeps your channel awesome, Stephen. Grownup spaghettiO's are a tantalizing concept for someone who grew up with a grandma who always kept the canned stuff in the house for us little brats. Thanks for keeping up an awesome channel.
I’m 54 and will still eat 6 pack of cans a year in a bind and it fills the void and actually not bad. Heartburn can be tuff though🤣 great vid I may try making this!
Totally disagree. Honestly, you can make a large batch of spaghettios even w/o the beef and it be cheaper than one can and feed more people. If you can afford some 80% beef make the meatballs smaller and stretch it. There are community programs that can teach this method. Free too.
@@garlicgirl3149 Well that just like your opinion man. Ending the video saying that his version is acceptable for adults was just kinda mean. Beyond that the ingredients he uses aren’t exactly cost effective for a very small budget. Considering pecorrino is like 8-10 bucks meat another 10 bucks, the jars he used can cost another 15-25 and that is already an expensive meal. A can of spaghettios can be anywhere from like 1-1.50 (which means you can get anywhere from 30-40 cans from the initial purchase of those ingredients) I feel his recipe, while it can be tasty, just comes off as someone who doesn’t understand the main point of the canned meal, which is to be cheap and generally filling. Yeah it doesn’t taste the best, but is adequate in taste based on the price paid.
I got bad news for you. That ground meat is mechanically ground. Like someone else stated earlier...we didn't eat spaghetti-o's because it was awesome. We ate it because we were poor, and as a 9 year old watching my younger brothers, couldn't cook what you did, nor find the ingredients. The way you couldn't eat that was horrible and kind of a douche move. Good thing you weren't in the military eating MRE's.
Spaghetti O’s and a grilled cheese sandwich is a good comfort food meal, pretty much a weekly meal for my kids, my 10 year old daughter loves the meal, I grew up eating Spaghetti O’s, unfortunately the ease of making it is whats attractive about it. I guess I need to give the Stevie-O’s recipe a try.
Just saying, I grew up on Spagetti-O's, which I still have once or twice a year just for nostalgia.... But, I'm definitely gonna give your recipe a try dude! Thanks man!
This looks fun, I cook every day. Sometimes I'll make sushi, eggs benedict with the best hollendaise sauce, or big batches of french onion soup with perfectly carmelized onions, Tamales that take an entire day of work. I even plan to smoke my own bacon soon....... But sometimes I'll buy a half dozen 1 dollar cans of this crap and eat it cold right out of the can because I am too tired to cook. It's an acquired taste. I'll give this recipe a shot at some point for sure. I'm seeing a lot of older folks in the comments. It should be mentioned that the newer stuff they make is MUCH different than even the processed stuff from the 70s and even more different from the 40s/50s. The recipe has gotten constantly worse in a lot of these canned food products to sell them at that price point.
I'm 77 and grew up on Chef Boyardee ravioli. Then I learned how to cook and eventually found channels like yours!! I recently opened a can of the Raviolis from the chef....WHYYYYYYY? How did I grow up without deformities! They still sell that crap. Thank you for teaching us what's good❤
I grew up eating SpaghettiOs and loved them. But when I was about 30 I noticed they didn't taste as good, and now, 40+, I can't even stand the smell of them. Made this recipe tonight (had to sub rigatoni because it was the smallest pasta I had on hand) and this fired all the nostalgia cylinders. Def going to make again. Steve is an absolute lad for this recipe.
It's me, I'm still buying and eating them. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge lover of good food (that's why I follow this channel), but eating food cold out of a can is a guilty pleasure of mine. Makes me feel alive, like I'm surviving. Plus it's cheap and quick after a long day. So I'll continue to buy them. But definitely will try this recipe someday, looks good.
Your version is definitely better. Though your version cost 10x more to make than buying ten cans of what you call dog-food. If I was on a budget I'd buy the cans or make a cheaper version of your recipe.
I love the mini pumpkins!!!!! Your comment regarding spending decades to refine your meatballs rings true. It takes time to work and improve upon things.
Spagettio's and Spam are quintessential camping food. That and some cheap beer and a camping chair. Pffffftttttt. It will not be a bad time brooottthhhhaaa!
I dunno about spaghetti-os, but Beefaroni and Ravioli were lunches of legends in the 80s. A bowl of either while watching Leave it to Beaver and The Andy Griffith Show with my mom…. Oh, the memories!

When I was a kid in the '70's, the can said Franco American. The Chef Boyardee brand was always better, at least I thought so in the 70's!😂 They had lasagna in a can!
I was going to say, I don't remember Spaghetti Os being a Campbell's product, but had totally forgotten about Franco American! I only had them once or twice, even as a kid I hated them, but then I knew what good pasta was. Chef Boyardee was at least edible 😀
We lived off of Spaghetti-O's, Chef Boyardee Ravioli, canned Beanie Weenies (which my dad would add stuff to doctor it up. Nothing fancy just like mustard and ketchup with onion powder), pizza rolls (My mom got like 2 cases on clearance once, lasted like 9 months), and Beefaroni for several years in my childhood. I have made it my mission in life to do well enough that my kids don't have to know what any of that tastes like (I already failed on pizza rolls. My wife loves them).
Obviously anything you make yourself will be superior to the stuff in the can... but Heaven help me, I LOVE Spaghetti-O's and always keep the Mario-themed variety in my pantry. Also, a little Worcestershire sauce goes a long way. What works for a Bloody Mary works for Spaghetti-O's.
It really annoys me when people complain about mechanically separated chicken - it's just a chicken carcass that gets spun around so all of the meat comes off. Sure, it looks gross, but it makes sure we use all the meat, the carcass is then used to make stock/gelatine. It's nose to tail and there's nothing wrong with it. It's all the other crap they add to it that makes it good or bad for you. They have a higher fat content than chicken thighs - but a lower or equivalent fat content to the meatballs you made in this video. roughly ~ 17%.
My 2 youngest girls grew up on spaghetti o’s and McDonald’s chicken nuggets if I would of made what you made and real chicken nuggets they would of turned there nose at it and cried😂
Growing up, my mother’s idea of a casserole was a giant can of spaghettios with a pack of sliced hot dogs, a can of peas mixed together in a 9 x 13 inch Pyrex, cover with slices of American cheese on top, places into a 350 oven until the cheese turned dark brown. Let it sit for about a half hour and slice and serve. Like that was supposed to let it set like lasagna. I am not even kidding you. So, nope, but thanks anyway. To this day I just can’t spaghettios, hot dogs that aren’t charred on the grill and most importantly, canned peas. It’s just not happening! 😂
@@Brad-ic4bp Dude, what happened to Dinty Moore's stew? It was great growing up (80s-90s) and I vaguely remember having it in the early/mid 00s. Then I forgot about it. I saw it in the store, remembered it and grabbed a can a few months ago... It was horrible. Super salty and chewie and little seasoning beside the salt, completely different from what I remember... I remember it being close to something out of a crock-pot, nice and tender and definitely not super salty with other flavors and beefier.
Bro, I love your channel. You do a great job of providing simple family recipes, traditional Italian recipes, and recipe spin offs that you have tuned up. But canned spaghettios? Really????
As a child I couldn't eat anything from Chef Boyardee. The pasta was goopy and the sauce had a metallic taste to counter the sweetness. That was 50 years ago. I was called a picky eater.
The thing is your missing the point.. SpaghettiOs have allways been a low cost easy food. its like $1.20 a can and can feed a hungry kid...I have had to live on it when times were tough growing up... Now ... Yes your homemade version is better but people are not eating it for that reason.
Hey man, when you grow up poor, there's only so many ways you can feed your kids on a budget. You should respect what that can has done for poor people. It certainly kept me fed, and saved my family from eating home made french fries and kraft dinner every single night.
Yeah. When I was a kid, SpaghettiO’s were a treat. It was a real special occasion if I got them with meatballs. Eventually, things turned around for us after I was already an adult, but every once in a while, I'll grab a can and remind myself how far I've come.
I grew up poor, but I never had any canned spaghetti. I can understand why it's so ubiquitous, though. You can quickly make it, and feed many people. I did survive off KD though; that carried me throughout my childhood and undergrad days.
As an adult, my partner and I have had to rely on spaghettios and cup of noodles numerous times. I love this channel but I couldn't watch the entire video after being made to feel less than for having to consume it during the hardest points in my life
Tasting History has an interesting video about Chef Ettore Boiardi, aka "Chef Boyardee," whose food pushed Cambells to invent Speghetios. He had a really fascinating life. Also, is that "cascade" consistency from the starch from the pasta?
I don't really consider SpaghettiOs pasta. When I want them I get them(I dunk peanut butter sandwiches in the sauce), when I want actual pasta I make it.
@@fnjesusfreak when they changed brand label they changed ingredients. Same thing happening to current products. Cheaper ingredients for more profits . See the complaints about Rao's products now owned by Campbell's corporation. They are not the same as original recipes.

I used to eat Spaghetti-Os when I was a kid. I bought a can as an adult and I couldn’t get past the awful “sauce” and slimy, mushy noodles. Never again!
My only comment here... I mean if you're doing it...... Anyway...... Double the meatball mix, and make an extra batch for wedding soup. Just roll em and put em in the fridge until tomorrow. Just me thinking aloud. I, as they say, double dash. It's like when I make horchata. I have all that rice there left over.. Gotta, gotta do Rice pudding the next day. How often do I do mini meat balls. I'd def double it.. But I love wedding soup.
Ok, so I will admit my Mom fed me these when I was a kid and I loved them. Not the one with the meatballs though. So, too many years later, I saw them on the shelf at the grocery store and remembered how I loved them so bought a can. Wow, they taste like, in all honesty, vomit. What was wrong with me then. You have me cracking up. You are not missing out on anything special what so ever! And yes, chemicals! Yikes! 😂

Wow dude, you deserve a Purple Heart for trying that, it’s one of the worst tasting thing on the planet.
DUDE SPAGHETTIOS ARE AWESOME
Next he’ll be claiming Dinty Moore isn’t their best beef stew!
I’ve been making my own ‘elevated’ version of Spaghetti-O’s (with franks) for years. Nice to see another twist.
Hilarious, but love what you did to bring them up to tasty! Thanks Stephen👍😉
❤❤❤ this recipe!! Meatballs are amazingly delicious.
Where was this when I'd eat Spagetti-O's on weekend afternoons ...LOL! ;)
Bro, I love your channel. You do a great job of providing simple family recipes, traditional Italian recipes, and recipe spin offs that you have tuned up. But canned spaghettios? Really????
Dude, I've never been so jazzed to click on a video. I will 100% give this a try. Looks simple and delicious.
The intro alone, Steve ... holy cow, I was laughing! You have really come into your own!
As a child I couldn't eat anything from Chef Boyardee. The pasta was goopy and the sauce had a metallic taste to counter the sweetness. That was 50 years ago. I was called a picky eater.
I am so pumped to watch this episode!
The thing is your missing the point.. SpaghettiOs have allways been a low cost easy food. its like $1.20 a can and can feed a hungry kid...I have had to live on it when times were tough growing up... Now ... Yes your homemade version is better but people are not eating it for that reason.
The ultimate survival food in a can. Grew up on them. Miss the Raviolio's.
spaghettios: great
gourmet spaghettios: supreme
Hahahaha. LMAO. Even I knew that stuff was crap when I was a kid. Loving your version. Grazie Mille!
I grew up on Spaghetti 0’s, beefaroni and chef boyardee. If we were lucky we would get canned peaches as desert.
Yeah, I'm getting a little tired of the bougie wanna-be aristocrat attitude that's been popping up in cooking videos lately.
A lot of kids grew up on this…..who didn’t have much choice
I grew up poor, but I never had any canned spaghetti. I can understand why it's so ubiquitous, though. You can quickly make it, and feed many people.
I did survive off KD though; that carried me throughout my childhood and undergrad days.
As an adult, my partner and I have had to rely on spaghettios and cup of noodles numerous times. I love this channel but I couldn't watch the entire video after being made to feel less than for having to consume it during the hardest points in my life
omg you are the best man lol I LOVE THIS FRIGGIN SHOW
I love this recipe, Steve. Thanks to you, I love mini meatballs. It just makes more sense..no over-eating!
Well, i guess I know what I'm doing on Sunday. Not Sunday sauce, instead Sunday SteveOs. Thx for the fun!
Tinned ravioli is even worse. I couldn't even eat real ravioli till about 2 years ago because of the crap they used to give us at school.
Tasting History has an interesting video about Chef Ettore Boiardi, aka "Chef Boyardee," whose food pushed Cambells to invent Speghetios. He had a really fascinating life. Also, is that "cascade" consistency from the starch from the pasta?
Mechanically separated chicken? Wtf 😳 and then the divine plate of glistening rings and balls. An excellent before and after, yummy 😋
Dude I will straight up fight you over this.
Thomas Joseph Grasso's last words before his execution: "I did not get my SpaghettiOs, I got spaghetti. I want the press to know this."
I don't really consider SpaghettiOs pasta.
When I want them I get them(I dunk peanut butter sandwiches in the sauce), when I want actual pasta I make it.
this....not the peanut butter thing, that's just weird and I love it and am trying this asap
Cambell's corporation ruined Spaghetti-O's. They are completely different from the Franco American version I grew up eating in the 70's and 80's.
LOL, Campbell has owned Franco-American since 1915.
@@fnjesusfreak when they changed brand label they changed ingredients. Same thing happening to current products. Cheaper ingredients for more profits . See the complaints about Rao's products now owned by Campbell's corporation. They are not the same as original recipes.
Video autoplays while I'm away from my phone
"Why are his eyes black?"
Me: "cause he's been told too many times"
Also me: "........ I'm going to hell" lol
I used to eat Spaghetti-Os when I was a kid. I bought a can as an adult and I couldn’t get past the awful “sauce” and slimy, mushy noodles. Never again!
The way I would be sooooo excited about this after school 😂😂
My only comment here... I mean if you're doing it...... Anyway...... Double the meatball mix, and make an extra batch for wedding soup.
Just roll em and put em in the fridge until tomorrow.
Just me thinking aloud. I, as they say, double dash.
It's like when I make horchata. I have all that rice there left over..
Gotta, gotta do Rice pudding the next day.
How often do I do mini meat balls. I'd def double it..
But I love wedding soup.
I LOVE spaghettos. It's really not fair compare them to homemade Italian food. Chef Boyardee is a cuisine unto itself.
I was gonna make chili dogs but maybe I’ll have grown ass spaghettiOs and Andouille sausage 😂❤
Yikes! 😂
Had the same experience with La Choy Chop Suey. I loved it as a kid. I bought one a couple years, oh boy was it bad.
Same
Even as a kid I didn’t like Spagettio’s. Way too sweet - to me it was like eating noodles in some sorta sweet ketchup.
TBF Spaghettio's would be like 25 dollars a can if made the way you did it.
