Something interesting about those share bikes in China, they actually required you to sign up to an app to make payments. My sister was unable to use the bikes, because the app required you to insert your card details but didn't have enough character spaces for certain western-styled names. Unintentionally locking people out of using share bikes with a simple mistake.
I think eventually they let you pay with just wechat and Alipay. They all had QR codes you could scan. I never used them, my girlfriend did a handful of times. I remember them flooding Shanghai in literally weeks. Those orange mobikes were dumped everywhere. You also had these green ones with an electric engine 😅
Another issue is simply that many people (including myself) still don't own smartphones (either due to finances or apathy). Anything that requires an app or QR codes to use is simply bad business sense.

Plus the apartments where I live removed the ability to use the coin slots on their public washers and dyers, and you have to use a smartphone app to pay. Us non cell/smart phone users are being left behind.
Forms having not enough space for western names is a common feature in Asian computer systems. That names can have more than six or so characters is just something you forget when everyone's only needs four.

Removing coin mechs from washers and dryers in laundromat facilities saves money too, in a couple of ways. All of these apps use mobile data too, which means wireless service providers make a boat load of money too. That's the profit motive. This trades for convenience for the end user. Still that convenience comes at a cost most people don't think about, personal privacy and data security. The apps and wireless providers sell your personal information and data on your habits to advertisers, government agencies, and more. Which is a massive privacy violation. Plus every time you use these kinds of services, your identity and payment information is sent out and it gets stored somewhere. Making it easier for your identity to be stolen and for your finances to be hijacked and stolen. Never mind if you lose your phone. It's honestly a bad deal that's being forced on us by an unscrupulous and uncaring upper class. I like to call it the new digital serfdom.

Many Chinese people don’t understand what a tank has to do with anything. (It was his birthday on June 3rd when he showed it). I just read about this yesterday. Interesting timing. To get a good bike here in Ohio from a bike shop, there is a waiting list. In China, I guess you can just grab one from a pile. I was in Columbus in 2019, and they had those rental bikes. I had never seen them before and asked someone renting one what they were doing. They explained the process to me. They have GPS on them and when people run out of distance/time, they lock up. So people just leave them on the sidewalks. Later that evening, I saw a truck collecting those ditched bikes.

To get a good bike here in Ohio from a bike shop, there is a waiting list. In China, I guess you can just grab one from a pile.
I was in Columbus in 2019, and they had those rental bikes. I had never seen them before and asked someone renting one what they were doing. They explained the process to me. They have GPS on them and when people run out of distance/time, they lock up. So people just leave them on the sidewalks. Later that evening, I saw a truck collecting those ditched bikes.
People really like to get outraged about everything huh?
