  • Lecture Abstract: The authors of the Hebrew Bible used many different metaphors to describe the phenomenon of speech, and one of these metaphors imagines words as physical bodies or structures which could be “set up” or “caused to stand.” What does it really mean to “cause a word to stand,” though? Does that describe the uttering of a statement, an affirmation of its accuracy, or the act of following through on a promise? In this talk, I will use both cognitive linguistic approaches and material-cultural evidence to reconstruct the logic of this metaphor.
