  • Surbahar and Sitar become the center of discussion as Pt. Santosh Banerjee takes us deep into the Instruments. Smt. Sahana Banerjee, his daughter and eminent Sitar player, demonstrates the two different styles of playing Surbahar before taking us back in history to the creation and evolution of Sitar.
    She also debunks a famous myth about the father of Sitar in the process.

    So good to hear the Amir Kushrau situation properly addressed and to see the comparison between the Persian "setar" and the sitar (both words meaning 3-string). Wonderful to hear this playing as well!

      Thanks for your comment ..one point I should tell you that I have played in this interview with my father's sitar and it is almost 60 yrs old ..and for last 4years it is kept almost unused.I repaired this sitar just one day before of this interview to give brief demonstration , what ever I have played it was just for the need of our interview.It was v difficult to to set the string within oneday ,as it was getting low after single meed..some how I managed briefly.It is not my full-fledged performance with my own sitar..Hope you understand..

      I love the sound of this instrument and I listen to it a lot. You play so beautifully. I have watched your RUclips videos. It’s unfortunate we don’t get to come to your concerts in the USA. I am sure a live concert is much different than watching a RUclips video. Thank you so much for sharing your music.

    i can sometimes hear blowing of the shankh or conch shelle in the background, are they located near a temple or some thing? or are they performing some rituals next door? just curious.

    Very nice presentation but during discussion on various styles there was no mention of Vilayat Khan who completely changed the Tantrakari style played by Ravi Shankar or for that matter Sahanajis father and introduced pure Khayal Gayaki ang in sitar which was adopted by Nikhil Banerjee only a good human being can become a good artist classical music will only come to pure souls jealousy can never take us anywhere to discuss sitar but without mentioning the name of Vilayat Khan is like performing a Puja without the idol of God Vilayat Khan was is and will always rrmain the greatest sitarist of the world whatever any body may say only it is their misfortune who coulf not enjoy his Gof gifted music

    I am interested in learning the Rudraveena but hearing these kind of tales makes me apprehensive!
    Is it really so that veenas and their players are doomed and plagued with misfortune?

    • @KaahonKommunications
      @KaahonKommunications  3 года назад +1

      Few stories and myths always remain with the age-old practices all over the world and subsequently Indian classical music stands in the same bracket for sure. Veena as a musical instrument demands certain amount of physical and emotional strength for learning and playing. I think, the stories related to Veena have been derived from this 'strength factor' only. Although, myths are and will be always there in our cultural life and the individuals play the key roles in living with it.

    Dear Lord what a rich cultural heritage!?! Had to google so many words from this...exposure? (is the word I would use). Loosing traditions like these ones is a crime and a sin. Merciless march of the mainstream is just walking over these artists. Indian state should certainly sponsor them. Treasures such is this one must be saved from oblivion.

    Bilaskhani Todi... Such beautiful raga; lovely gats also.
    Something sounds out of tune the second time she picks up the sitar, though. It might be me, since...you know... I am no Shahana Banerjee... but I couldn't help to hear that all the time
