Thank you both so much for being real, honest and vulnerable! It’s so rare to see media men/ celebrities get real about matters that too many of us are afraid to discuss or be vulnerable enough to share. Grew up having massive admiration for Allen Wu from the amazing race days. It’s moving to hear his “Singaporean” local POV with such realness.
The irony is that one needs to hustle till almost at brink of health colllapse when young, to earn and save up enough, in order to be able to say "money isn't everything", "health is more important" when they are older. Telling a young person whose body can still take a beating that "money isn't everything", feels like a disconnect. Money IS everything, at least here in SG. Just how much and at what price. The key is knowing when to tell ourselves it is time to dial down the hustle and prioritise other things that matters, such as health and relationships (but only after the money for basic needs are firmly secured).
Great talk by both to discuss issues commonly faced by men in Singapore. I feel like as men we seldom discuss things on platforms like these unlike the women, and it’s time for us to communicate more.
We're glad you found the conversation valuable, and we hope to encourage more men to share their experiences and insights. Thank you for being part of the conversation!
This podcast is very assuring, I'm a man in thirties and I totally relate. From a third person point of view, I also kinda feel for men out there that are struggling to meet the expectations of society.
I took a pay cut to enable myself to be at home most of the time to spend time with my family and for my own health. Never regretting it. Sometimes salary is not everything but of course I'm probably one of the few lucky ones to still able to have this option.
People in Singapore are absolutely more hung up on materials than in many other countries. We are so brought up that way. Our social fabric is woven like that. Its part of the “culture” 😅. So we have to make a very conscious effort to not be. Especially for me being in the “glamorous” financial industry, my Zen journey had to be a very conscious one right from the start.
Thank you for sharing your insights! It’s true that our environment and upbringing can heavily influence our values. Your journey towards finding balance and simplicity in a demanding industry is inspiring. We appreciate your perspective and hope our discussions can help foster more awareness around these important issues.
there's even more pressure on being a "man" than ever. But actually a lot of females don't look for luxuries, sure there's some kind of basic standard like giving small gifts and buying meals. We will never be ready, keep hustling, keep fit.
Appreciate the honesty. I gotta say though, if Bobby has to worry abt a 5k emergency expense for his dog, that sounds like a paycheck to paycheck existence and likely low savings/reserves
Unfortunately there is no governance over Vets and what they charge now. It’s absolutely crazy. An MRI for one shoulder can run $4500. A human maybe 1k

@@btonelli My pleasure. Perhaps as 2 more mature men, you could discuss how the pair of you have navigated the complexities of dating as an older man- did you find that you had a wider selection pool as you accumulated more status with age or did you face more challenges? Also keen to hear about your routines when it comes to mental & physical well being- what are the habits you inculcate, what are the challenges, the things you wished you could do better etc- just bouncing off some ideas!
@@ArvinSingh-xv2qj love those! We have a dating episode coming up that does touch on some of that. It may be the next one or right after, need to check with our producer. Yes the physical and mental wellbeing is something we should get into more too.
Great conversation and agreeing on two things: it's always a moving target and at some point we realized that we don't need any of this sh*t. That being said, I feel that this perspective comes from a place of privilege. Before reaching that point, life often felt like a hamster wheel.
its true... i find myself not searching for a partner because i have student tuition debts + don't think I'm making enough money to even get into a relationship. cant even get a house myself too because of the 35yo age requirement for btos, and condos are way out of my league in terms of income
I think you need to at least set some criteria on what is considered "comfortable" living before a meaningful salary number can be derived. E.g. owning a car is really expensive. Is that part of "comfortable"?
That's a great point! Defining what "comfortable" living means can vary significantly based on individual circumstances and lifestyle choices. Thank you for contributing to the conversation!
It will nvr be enough once one's priorities are about money. The moment one reaches 20k pm they will only want more, at the sacrifice of many other more precious things
if you can find a wife who is extremely ok with living with less, then you will be a very fortunate man because of lesser financial pressure. But it doesn't mean one should slacken and not try their best to earn more
$10k and above monthly is great but in what expense. If it comes with tremendous stress and not enough time with family etc then I would say you're actually poor.
I would say 90% of the people out there want to know what someone does. Honestly, I don't care. I just feel, do we vibe, do we click, what interests do we have? what's the personality like? what kind of life do you want? what's your expectations, and also what level are you yourself at? at the end of the day would be priorities really.
@@Shawn-pq5gp I guess it depends on one’s background. If they are financially stable they may be looking for someone that has drive and interests but money isn’t the most important. If someone comes from humble beginnings they may look for what could be a financial benefit in a partner.
