- On Friday, July 21, 1933, in preparation for the production of QUEEN CHRISTINA, Greta Garbo sat for a costume test with cinematographer William H. Daniels. This piece is an excerpt from the nine-minute long test. Directed by Rouben Mamoulian, QUEEN CHRISTINA premiered 80 years ago on December 26, 1933 in New York and was released nationwide in 1934.
The costume test was preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2012 through "Project Film-to-Film," aimed at preserving as many films on film as possible over a two-year period. The project allowed the Academy to make new elements for over 500 projects in the Archive's collection.

The timeless and ageless Golden Garbo.
SO RARE and FASCINATING -- even (for Garbo fans) DEVASTATING -- to see the greatest film actress ever giving a performance she believed no one but a very few behind-the-scenes technicians would ever see and still, she has a 'wild animal' quality, as if she may suddenly bolt out of sight at any moment.
The smile @ :25 is devastatingly genuine ... the close-up @ :57, why does Daniels instruct her to look up? ... a quick, professional pucker @ 1:26 to perfect her lipstick and then -- boom, her face goes instantly stony and Sphinx-like... @ 1:48 Daniels provides a shadow for her to play with -- perhaps rehearse with? -- and she launches into a silent inner monologue, emotions flashing across her face too numerous to count.

Garbo excelle dans les rôles de personnages historiques. Les connaisseurs et spécialistes de Garbo disent que c'est Christine de Suède qui s'est incarnée dans Garbo et non le contraire. Je trouve que cette comparaison n'est pas tout à fait exagérée ;car en plus de certaines similitudes dans les traits de caractère, Garbo au faît de sa gloire ,choisit une vie plus simple loin du tumulte de la vie Hollywoodinne et de ce qui s'y prête, Christine de Suède abdiqua de son propre chef du Trône de Suède pour vivre loin des protocoles qu'exige son statut de Reine, et en quête de savoir et de culture mena une vie de voyageuse. Elle rencontra même la sulfureuse courtisane mais femme de grand_esprit Ninon de Lenclos à Paris.
