I've read interviews by other Japanese female artists talking about Scandal. Just about everyone credits Scandal for the female rock wave that has come the last 7-8 years. There are literary 100's of bands that started out doing Scandal covers before moving on to doing their own stuff. I think it was Akane from Band-Maid that said that without Rina in Scandal she would never have started playing drums. Before Scandal it was apparently really hard for female bands to get record deals and to be taken serious. They've had more or less 100% artistic control even before starting their own label. That is virtually unheard of in Japan. But then again, they are arguably the biggest female rock band in Japan and have been for a long time. Another band from Osaka started at the same music school is Girlfriend. The inspiration is obvious, but where Scandal added punk/garage-rock, they added funk. You should check out their song Full House. The bass player is insanely talented!
@@michaelfieser In an MTV interview, RINA also cited Nao as an inspiration-"powerful so not to be outdone by a man but she has a cute voice." MtH started well before SCANDAL but then Nao is their only female member
Scandal did not learn their instruments until they formed the band (2006). Within months they were playing live shows (their own songs) locally and within two years they were playing a small US tour, all while the drummer was still in school. Six years after coming and learning their instruments they were playing arenas including Budokan. They are the garage band's dream.

I was going to see them live in September, with Meet&Greet and all ... but that's cancelled now, of course :( . They were my entry into J-Rock several years back and without them I probably would never have gone an this journey through japanese music that even led to me to going to Japan several times now and meeting a lot of cool bands and people. So they have a special place in my heart. But I only saw them on some kind of open air fashion event in Tokio, not playing live.
Aaaah, the band before band maid was a thing, they are cutey, they out grow their school girls uniform look, one of those bands that hangbout with the maids,
I'm actually gutted. my reply with a link to Mutant Monster seems to have gone totally unnoticed :( I hope he checks them out! They are one of my favourites ^_^ Great live too!
@@fikriirshade1132 Same here! They are all lovely gals too, good sense of humour to fit ^_^ I can't wait until the next gig of theirs I get to attend :)
Scandal is my favourite band at the moment and yes, Haruna is a cutie :) Their songs from last two albums are much more towards punk-rock, ska, reggae though they do have grunge, edm and jazz/blues mixes. They all do arrangements, though mostly Mami (guitarist); lyrics, though many are from Rina (drummer) and Haruna and they all sing too, though main singer is Haruna. Tomomi is the bassist and she can really play that base, somewhat like Misa from Band Maid. Fun fact, Rina the drummer is getting better and better every album, she almost quit playing drums at the beginning thinking she will never be able to. Oh and they can dance :) Was about to see them live, but with all this going on it has been postponed for next year. Wish Lovebites and Band Maid will come as well. Especially Lovebites (Ah Miyako). Other groups: Asterism (instrumental, right hand hammer on 8 string bass? Check), Aldious, Mary's Blood, Nemophila, Passcode, Doll$$box and well ... there are hundreds of all female bands in Japan. Hard to keep track :)
I've always been watching out for your (G)I-DLE reactions and just now saw you're reacting to SCANDAL too! My JRock and KPop worlds have collided lmao I now have another reason to stay tuned to your channel. Please check out more SCANDAL songs like Shunkan Sentimental, Shoujo S and Harukaze. (They have more bangers but I'll let other people recommend them lol)
A little late, but I wanted to chime in. This is a killer song and performance. They are really polished. Scandal and Band-Maid are my 2 faves - discovered both within about a week, 4 yrs ago. Thanks to the online community, RUclipsrs like you, my own exploring and the YT algorithm, I've discovered maybe 40-50 more great Japanese and Korean artists since then. But those 2 always rise to the top for me. I can draw some major differences between them, you could too, I'm sure. What makes Scandal great that they do have in common with B-M: They worked and continue to work very hard to improve every day, and seem to really appreciate their fans. They worked until their labels agreed to let them put out songs written by them (music and words). They are outstanding live, and rarely if ever make a mistake onstage. Their music, from soft to hard, is beautifully crafted and always very catchy. They work together and harmonize beautifully. All indications are they are cool, down to earth people. And, as you've said, they achieve all this while being gorgeous.
Nice reaction! It took me some time to get into Scandal, since their early songs were very poppy. But over the time they really did grow on me. If you like Scanal, you should defenitely check out Girlfriend. They started very similary with Pop Rock but like Scandal have quickly outgrown that Genre with very sophisticated Arrangements. Their latest Video Full House is really worth a listen as are the Covers they release on their own Channel. As for japanese Punk Rock, check out Mutant Monster, Toranoko Rammy, Dizzy Sunfist, Otoboke Beaver, The Let‘s Gos and Su凸ko D凹koi. All of them are great!
Fun fact about that video is there two flags in the video and on the back wall it’s hard to see but it’s my hometown flag of Bennington flag. It’s from Bennington Vermont.
@@Hedgehog1039 I started collecting their CDs a few years back when I discovered their Abnormal album. They write some damn good songs, and I really like the interplay between the vocalists.
😉 Translate DeepL - No Google!!! Nice response! I actually got a link to a Japanese band called Yousei Teikoku from a friend around the end of 2019 and liked it, although it wasn't right for me! So I started searching further in the Japanese waters and Scandal were the first I found. It wasn't this song, it was Shojo S, and although it's such a pop-rock song (I guess the video for it does that too), it still rang in my head! This is the last song and video I've found for Scandal for 2 years so far, but I admit I always go for the best, so maybe I haven't found anything newer! Because then I tracked down Doll Box, Band Maid and my favorites today are Trident, formerly GRBK, aka Girls Rock Band Kakumei (Kakumei - Revolution)! The song Voltage is my top 1! Junna just kills all the current drummers, no exceptions! Although someone wrote in the comments that they renamed themselves Trident after Junna left the band, but the description of the record convicts him of lying! For a trio, it's pretty pumped up, and as much as I love those three sisters from Mexico - Monterey today, the Japanese rock scene sounds very good, I'd say even better than the whole fucking west! The joy is there, great technique, make up the rest! Sure, it's not Zeppelin, Deep Purple or maybe even Floyd, but it's also not metal - which is very good at times, but very good rock is just better than metal! Yes I'm an old man, I'm entitled to it - I'll be 60 years old at the end of rock! So I am a bit of a nostalgic, but I can tell the difference between metal and rock, and the joy of new young rock blood will not be taken away from me by any wannabe music critic who can't tell the goat from the cart! Maybe old, but not stupid! 😉 Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
One of the best bands out there and I'm so impressed of their career. From playing the streets of Osaka, to major venues, world tours, own clothing brand and their own record label, these ladies work hard! Next one? Platform Syndrome: ruclips.net/video/KlSMjay7Xns/видео.html
I follow Scandal for a long time, when i buy their first mini-album. So cheap that don´t even have a yewell box, instead a cardboard sleeve. And they touch a lot of corners. From garage rock, rock with a lot of vibes and even crazy things from time to time like do a "disco song" or even a rap duel, just for fun. Scandal is so popular now that they can do whatever they want to. Oh, and all of them sing, but most of the times Haruna do the vocals and Tomomi back vocals, but some songs are all by Tomomi, frequently the most fun and originals How can yo do a song about a pizza party?... Tomomi can do it ruclips.net/video/aPRij0qbZik/видео.html Or a song about... doing the laundry ruclips.net/video/FJBZcLByNNU/видео.html Among a lof of songs really goods, they have a handful of crazy ones, also really good
Scandal started off more pop-y, but they've been slowly getting harder and edgier over time. Not sure if that's a response to the competition from groups like Band Maid, Lovebites and Mary's Blood, or just a natural tendency. Anyway, good pick, good analysis, nice reaction! More!
Scandal has no virtuosos like Band Maid. But Damn you can hear all those years of experience when it comes to song writing. They are just in another league. I love Band Maid but Scandal will always have a special place in my heart.
I see people suggesting Saishuuheiki Kimi for a next reaction, and while it's an amazing song, I think you should wait with it a little bit. That's because it's on the slightly more experimental side. I would recommend seeing/hearing/reacting to a few more of their earlier classics like Shunkan Sentimental, Platform Syndrome, Awanaitsumorino Genkidene, or Koisuru Universe, and then checking out the more recent Masterpiece and Saishuuheiki Kimi. That's IMHO a great way to be introduced to the band :)
I haven't even watched this video yet but I'm glad a smart reviewer is checking out my other favorite J-Rock band (along with Band-Maid). (After): glad you dug them. This was a good introductory song. Along with their endearing personalities, this band works really worked hard and are just super-polished both in the studio and live, have great chemistry and like some ppl say down below, are almost all over the pop/rock/punk map - and they cover that map really well. Just masterfully constructed songs in whatever genre(s) the given song falls into. They just pushed their N.A. tour back from 9/2020 to 11/2021 - not sure how I'm gonna manage to wait that long.
Scandal isn't particularly technical, but they are a ton of fun and catchy as all hell. It doesn't hurt them that they fully leverage their good looks and fashion sense, but they've been around for as long as they have (over a decade now!) because, at the end of the day, the music is good.
YESS!!! I love this track! Japan is full of great bands and Scandal is certainly one of them! :P Another great reaction my man! Since you said you got into punk early on, how about a fairly new Japanese punk group? #reaction Mutant Monster - Abnormal ruclips.net/video/Fd6ymMR40NU/видео.html They put on a great live show and have a beefy sound for a 3 piece ;) Bassist and Guitarist (both vocalists) are sisters. As for Scandal, how about checking out some of their earliest stuff? They're even still in school uniform! xD Here is "Shoujo S" ruclips.net/video/qCXGE1cLWrw/видео.html I saw someone also recommended Polkadot Stingray! I second this: here's "mermaid"! ruclips.net/video/rudHfB6hatw/видео.html
Like a bit of Japanese music AND punk? Well I'll suggest the all-female trio The Let's Go's and their track 'Kaiju' (Monster) ruclips.net/video/o7boTXBbGpQ/видео.html First the bad news, you won't get your much loved 2nd verse variation, nor a guitar solo, but the song only lasts 61 seconds, so that's not a surprise. The good? It's an insanely energetic little song, and if it doesn't fire you up, your punk heart might be dying.
I think you said you have covered a lot of Kpop, but have listened to rock music from Korea? There is one band called "Walking After U". The vocalist has kind of a Joan Jett, Lzzy Hale tone. Have a look at "Karma" ruclips.net/video/OkmJkdvAuCo/видео.html
If you like Ska/Punk try the band SiM. Scandal and about a dozen other bands just guest starred in the video for the song "Baseball Bat" (ruclips.net/video/a7A0IBjif00/видео.html) not their best, by any means, but not bad.

The girls are on point wish they would do a tour with BAND-MAID, that would be killer. I also give props at
some of their live shows that the girls are plugged into EVH (EDDIE VAN HALEN)
custom amps.... SHRED ON LADIES...
please react to more of scandal!!!!! platform syndrome, koisuru universe, tonight, their good old shunkan sentimental, there are so many you can choose!! i liked your reaction A LOOOT
I haven't heard them before and I like it!
i have to thank youtube algorithm for recommending this reaction vid. loved it
I was going to see them live in September, with Meet&Greet and all ... but that's cancelled now, of course :( .
Aaaah, the band before band maid was a thing, they are cutey, they out grow their school girls uniform look, one of those bands that hangbout with the maids,
If you like punk you should give Mutant Monster a listen.
I'm actually gutted. my reply with a link to Mutant Monster seems to have gone totally unnoticed :(
I hope he checks them out! They are one of my favourites ^_^ Great live too!
they are first thing that come to my mind when i hear japan and punk
@@fikriirshade1132 Same here! They are all lovely gals too, good sense of humour to fit ^_^ I can't wait until the next gig of theirs I get to attend :)
MUTANT MONSTER IS AWESOME!!!!! id throw in a plug for DIZZY SUNFIST as well theyre a little more skate-punk but they write some catchy stuff
@@fikriirshade1132 Otoboke Beaver second
Oh and they can dance :)
Was about to see them live, but with all this going on it has been postponed for next year.
My JRock and KPop worlds have collided lmao
I now have another reason to stay tuned to your channel. Please check out more SCANDAL songs like Shunkan Sentimental, Shoujo S and Harukaze. (They have more bangers but I'll let other people recommend them lol)
Been a fan of them since 2012, they are just amazing.
love scandal. and silent siren haha both are good popy punky stuff
Another J band i’ve been listening to for years. Love em.
Great, I like Scandal, another group you could see is Aldious (Dominator).
Aldious - We are, Or any other they are amazing!
fan since 2012
they’re my childhood❤️
Yes, pure punk - Otoboke Beaver - Don't Light My Fire - ruclips.net/video/fkWfFXnLpYg/видео.html
Mina from Girlfriend is a really good bass player. She posts short bass covers on Instagram.
I liked what I could find of Scandal on youtube unfortunately most have region locks on many of their videos.
Got some use out of my VPN.
Look for live performance then you can see more videos
@@malcolmrush right there's LOADS of lives out there
Most of their mv aren't region blocked anymore. Some lives with many views were taken down though. Sad
Tomomi Tomomi Tomomi!
LOL. Enough love for two girls?
@@JuanSan66 two try one per band (Usually the Bassist), I do try to ration it out
Nice Reaction. You should try "IMAGE" for your Reaction. One of their earlier works
Fun fact about that video is there two flags in the video and on the back wall it’s hard to see but it’s my hometown flag of Bennington flag. It’s from Bennington Vermont.
If you want to hear more J-rock that leans hard on punk, check out Mutant Monster. The song "Abnormal" would be a good place to start.
Great recommendation! I have linked that song in my comment too ;) Such a good band live too!
@@Hedgehog1039 I started collecting their CDs a few years back when I discovered their Abnormal album. They write some damn good songs, and I really like the interplay between the vocalists.
Craig & Champ, Thanks!

Oh, and all of them sing, but most of the times Haruna do the vocals and Tomomi back vocals, but some songs are all by Tomomi, frequently the most fun and originals
How can yo do a song about a pizza party?... Tomomi can do it
ruclips.net/video/aPRij0qbZik/видео.html
Or a song about... doing the laundry
ruclips.net/video/FJBZcLByNNU/видео.html
Among a lof of songs really goods, they have a handful of crazy ones, also really good
they were doing a livestream concert today or yesterday for 30 bucks . not sure if anyone seen it . but I wanna see them live asap.
I love when people mention ska. I loved it in highschool and im no musician but a lot of people under like 45 have no idea what ska is lol
WOW this is the hardest Scandal song I have heard
this is just.....FUN!!!
Please react to Jimin Serendipity. Also love your reaction.😊👍
Check out their latest single, "Spice"..! You gonna love it 🤘🏻 🎸
So...I'm thinking about crowdsourcing a Japanese Rock festival for the US for post-covid. Any thoughts on this? Enough interest?
Personally I love the idea... but I don't know anyone around my parts that have any interest in J rock unfortunately.
Wait till you hear scandal - take me out 😁🤘
Nice, I personally like their comeback song/video Saishuheiki Kimi a bit more. Speaking of punch rock it's got a real 311 vibe to it.
SHUNKAN SENTIMENTAL NEXT!!!
Scandal isn't particularly technical, but they are a ton of fun and catchy as all hell. It doesn't hurt them that they fully leverage their good looks and fashion sense, but they've been around for as long as they have (over a decade now!) because, at the end of the day, the music is good.
Please react to “masterpiece - scandal” 🙌🏻
Try reacting to Scandal's "Masterpiece" it has a Rage against the Machines kinda vibe.
(Whispers) discover Unlucky Morpheus....
Do more Scandal songs!
This is nothing compared to their other one Masterpiece; it is what it says it is in the title
You should listen to "Flashback No 5" I promise you will like it.
YESS!!! I love this track! Japan is full of great bands and Scandal is certainly one of them! :P
Another great reaction my man!
Since you said you got into punk early on, how about a fairly new Japanese punk group?

Mutant Monster - Abnormal

They put on a great live show and have a beefy sound for a 3 piece ;) Bassist and Guitarist (both vocalists) are sisters.
As for Scandal, how about checking out some of their earliest stuff? They're even still in school uniform! xD Here is "Shoujo S"

haruna the leader saw them in 2015 in chicago my first love please check out burn live at buddakan
That's pretty good, reminds me of a mix between the Runaways and Girlschool's - "C'mon Lets Go" - ruclips.net/video/BYNWo93fPG8/видео.html
Did you react to *EXO* before!! If not plllz check out their mv *"Obsession"* you will not regret it, merciiii
I did actually... just search EXO on my page and youll see it
CHECK OUT UNLUCKY MORPHEUS - BLACK PENTAGRAM. JAPANESE METAL BAND
Nice reaction!!! please react to the song "masterpiece". Thank you for uploading.
MORE J ROCK look into Trident
Scandal latest song is called Spice. If you do a react video do only the song not original music video for copyright issues.
