      Alcoholic drink and tobacco products are taxed heavily because they are detrimental to public health. As you might know, public health is a great concern of Malaysian government such that healthcare is heavily subsidised.

    On the subject of food you mentioned, the traditional meal setting for Malaysian is family style/communal dining where all the dishes get sent out and everyone then serves themselves to what they want at the table as a group to eat at the same time. When it comes to individual plates, the kitchen probably wants to get the plates out as soon as they're done rather than keeping the orders grouped together. Generally they will make the dishes in order in the order slip so the gap of time between the dishes depends on the type of item that need to be prepared next.

    • @QueenofDC
      @QueenofDC  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you for explaining how meals are served for family style which I see all around. Yes, it seems they cook one slip at a time and whisk out when done and maybe there's limited staff, no time for stacking plates. Appreciate you watching and taking time to offer insight 🥰.

      @QueenofDC Malaysians especially the motorbike riders will chg their shoes to sandals. Some ladies will use like a plastic cover over shoes. Yes, alcohol is super expensive here in Malaysia because of the high tax. Besides, our country has Muslim majority.
    About tapping the card to pay, if the price of the item displayed lower than the price at the counter (when they already scanned the item) you shall get the lower price. We have rules and law enforcement on this matter. All payment terminals can reverse the payment, make it void. Maybe that convenience store staff that you went didn't know how to do it. Ask for the manager or supervisor to reverse the payment.
    About the traffic, ours is better than other Southeast asian countries. Even it is congested, the traffic is smooth, hard to hear honks. It's just the matter of being patient while on the road.

    • @QueenofDC
      @QueenofDC  10 месяцев назад +2

      Thank you so much for the details and guidance. I figured being a Muslim majority country was part of the reason. WOW! I had no idea about the register rules because it's that way in the USA. Next time, I'll ask for a manager if required because trying to explain to cashier can be complicated and they don't have the authority to resolve. Someone else mentioned Indonesia - traffic is real bad and slow using one lane for two 😩. Bangkok I took the train everywhere which was nice. It's the driver impatience that's annoying, I understand traffic woes but cars in a rush to go to the next light 😡. I'm glad I made this video because I'm learning a lot. Appreciate you watching and your thoughtful input!

    I have an American living with me here in KL. So he doesn't really eat spicy food. Don't even get me started with chicken or fish pieces with bones in it haha...So I have to tell him to be careful, eat slowly! When he tries to tell the staff (especially at mamak) to make his food a certain way, I'd just cut him and say don't bother..they don't know..Lol. He's learning to adapt slowly...

    • @QueenofDC
      @QueenofDC  10 месяцев назад +1

      😂🤣😂See that's why I tough it out. I also don't like telling them to alter certain dishes because they may misunderstand and I end up not liking my food LOL! I've learned to ask for less spice but that's all I can do right now 😆. But I know my asking limits and don't get carried way HAHAHA! Some folks have mercy on me and make sure I know if something is too spicy. In Thailand the ladies would always warn me SPICY SPICY HOT 🥵 🤣. I'm slowly and through experience learning.

    Hehe. We usually share our food in most of the food cultures in Malaysia, so we don’t really go by individual entreés, mains and desserts at most restaurants, but there are more expensive restaurants that do that- they’re a minority though and mostly only in KL, Penang and maybe Johor. Yes our traffic is horrible 😂 some drivers don’t give a signal when they change lanes because they’re scared the car behind in the next lane will speed up to prevent them from changing lanes 😅 Road rage is a total thing here.

As for the superstitious Chinese belief, it's quite a nonsense, 4 doesn't belong to Chinese, 4 is four in English language, 4 is empat in Bahasa Melayu, it's just ridiculous to replace 4 with 3A. And as for traffic movement, it's something that the Malaysian roads authority shouldn't neglect and ignore on the attitude and the behavior of all rude and defiant motorists on the roads. Hi. In Malaysia, people like to take advantage when there is opportunity. When it comes to swapping or exchanging itemss which you bought, you tasted and then return? If you are the business owner, what would you with that? Throw it away or give it to customers?
    Due to the weather here, ice melts fast and will make drinks feel flat in just several minutes. This is one reason why most ice drinks in eateries would be prepared extra sweet. It would be balanced out as the ice melt.
    As much as i agree with the etiquette at dinner table, it doesnt apply so much outside official meet or events. Perhaps weddings yes, but when you hang around with friends the question of being rude does not apply when you start eating first. Its called flexible and understanding.
    Entering someone's home without removing shoes would be rude here though, smoking/drinking alcohol or showing some form of affection in public areas are too.
    About traffic, every one has their right if way, yes? For motorists and pedestrians alike. Same goes in NewYork, Washington or London.
    Motorcylists are allowed to split lanes and squeeze between traffic as an appreciation for them. Imagine if 600,000 of them resort to driving cars? KL would be a terrible grid lock day and night.
    KL is lucky to have about 2 million people commuting with additional 4 million from neighbouring districts adding to the congestion.
    Cannot imagine if we have 15-20 million people as to what cities like Jakarta, Manila, Bangkok have. Been there?😅

    • @QueenofDC
      @QueenofDC  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for watching and sharing! On the soda you take it back because the machine wasn't properly carbonated we know the difference in taste. Hopefully, they will throw it away. Been in Malaysia long enough to know the difference the no ice meh soda for me is normal LOL I just drink it because I'm not in the USA where they will replace it either way. I'm not trying to get over for 20 cent soda.
      I get that's your upbringing or culture on etiquette and I have mine, which isn't an easy habit to break. Regardless, I like to start eating with my guests or friends so in Malaysia it's understood I have to place a time limit on that wait 😂and will always apologize. Just because we're friends doesn't always change my manners or proper habits.
      I've seen people in KL display public affection from various backgrounds but that description is vague. There are various types. Absolutely on taking your shoes off before entering homes. It's always been a practice in my home.
      Come on now with the traffic of course we all have our rights but drivers are rude and don't follow the rules period. DC has horrific traffic and terrible road rage drivers just like Malaysia. DC is land of gridlock with terrible commute. Drivers need more patience here and there bottom line.
      Bangkok has an excellent transit system so that's my preferred mode but I didn't find their drivers as rude 🤷🏽‍♀️.

    You cannot exchange as the stock count will not be the same as the cashier report end of the day. So the manager needs to void the purchase items, not the cashier.

      @QueenofDC  10 месяцев назад

  • @DenizIman
    @DenizIman 10 месяцев назад +8

    I dont know but regarding that different price tags when paying & also not being able to void the thing that is not yours, you can actually lodge a report to the consumer board. It happens, but we Malaysian also wont be silent about it. Next thing you know people will post bout it in the local facebook community group and that place is gonna be in trouble. There're things u can compromise but not this. Our consumers board take this seriously.
    As far as for exchanging things, I admit it might cause a heck of a process (and drama). And sometimes to just accept the situation gives you more peace than facing it. Unless it's super pricey then fight for it. Small things, we take that as fate lol..
    Also here the concept of returning the purchased items is actually allowed with terms, but working in retail myself many moons ago, we'd pray it wouldnt happen. Gosh the hassle! And I mean I know some people in other countries who shop a dress, use it with the tag on, and then return it for a refund. I dont think that's a nice thing to do. So maybe that's why our retail scenes are different & maybe more strict.

    • @QueenofDC
      @QueenofDC  10 месяцев назад +4

      Oh wow! I had no idea and thought that's the way it's done here. Me not knowing just rolled with it. Now I'm informed and can request further assistance if it happens again. If I'm making big purchases I ask the return policy because I don't want to be stuck with an expensive item if it doesn't work. Gross on the wearing clothes then returning, folks do that in the states if it's not a legitimate issue other than wear and want money back. See after the misunderstanding I'm not trying to make it even more complicated so I just took the L. I've been educated and now know there are other options for me!! Thank you for explaining and informing me of the policies and ways to handle. 😊

I'm in a new country learning and Malaysia hasn't disappointed me. The people have been warm and thoughtful and that's what makes a place for me. I'll adjust along the way as I learn.

    You can always ask for your food to be served at the same time. Some places ask your preference.
    Refunds or exchanges - you shouldn't have any problems with it. I guess they probably didn't understand you?

    • @QueenofDC
      @QueenofDC  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you!! I've never been asked my preference on the food issue but also didn't know that one could request food served together. I just thought it was the way restaurants operate and dare not impose my standards on your policy. Maybe it was loss in translation because I kept repeating myself then after a point it was useless. My fault for not asking for the manager but again just thought it was the way it is here. Appreciate you sharing, I'm learning so much from the responses and how to better handle situations knowing what's acceptable.

    Wow... comparing Malaysia to the USA is a big honor for us. You know we are a developing country right? We just got out from that 3rd world category not too long ago. Do not expect too much or you'll stress yourself out.

    • @QueenofDC

      Malaysia has exceeded my expectations. I visit places with an open mind and being able to comfortably rest my head is my expectation. I'm a visitor here to learn and appreciate a new way of living. All I expect is mutual respect. Malaysia exceeds America in some ways and there's always an adjustment living in a new place and cultures. It's not wrong or bad, it's just different BUT now based on this post and responses I know some things aren't actually that way and I have alternatives.

    Auntie, brother, sis, uncle, grandpa, grandma - we always use to respect the person. Even if we are angry.
    Tax for alcohol is very expensive.
    Restaurant for us more like the Kopitiam or Mamak type. Maybe yours sort of fine dining?
    We don't believe much for substitution. For me, my late mom always tell me to eat or stay hungry. Hahaha. But maybe the newer parent generation will do such substitution.
    Yes, you need to be careful. But you can call the manager to change. They can change I think. Nevertheless, you are kind person Ms. If you find the local waitress didn't understand you, you can always ask help from other local nearby. I am sure there is kind people around you. If I am there, I will help people.
    3A - Chinese superstitious. 4 means die. Thus, they avoid that numbers.

    • @QueenofDC

      That's unfortunate because I can usually tell through scent and sight if someone has worn an item then try to return it - nope you're not getting refunded. In USA you can return unworn items with tags and some places policy will refund even if you've worn such as Nordstrom. Folks take advantage of the system but I'm not one of them.

      I've noticed employees don't deviate from the process. They are doing their job as instructed, if you ask them to go slightly out the box, it causes confusion. Some act that way in the USA until they learn how it's really done 😂🤣but with certain small things employees use their discretion.
