If St Georges Day was part of a bank holiday weekend and meant a day off work, then I'm sure it would be more popular, but the powers that be don't want that.
A good example of that was the London marathon, both the St George's day celebrations and the marathon held on the same day so that as little attention as possible went towards a national celebration.
One of my favourite hymns, along with Lord of all Hopefulness and dear Lord and Father of Mankind, which I often listen to when I need uplifting. Also Onward Christian Soldiers. We need that again more than ever now.

We had a traumatic event in the family almost two decades ago, then I had an accident in 2012 and was made medically redundant. The stress of the broken bones, outright medical neglect by the NHS and then having to jump through hoops like a beggar to claim not enough money to live on....well it took its toll. Add to that stage 4/5 COPD. I have only recently been able to cut down smoking, with the help of my youngest son who rightly gets on my case. I don't argue with him because he is right and I know it's upsetting for him. Apparently there is an addiction gene, and if people have that it can make it almost impossible to stop an addiction of any sort. I do actually detest myself for it. Because I still have about half a dozen roll ups a day of course the GP's and pulmonary rehab have no interest in treating me, apart from Ventolin and another inhaler. I buy boost oxygen and use that 2 or 3 times a day if I have to, and it does help. The stage I am now at, I am going to be done for even when I manage to give up entirely (very soon the way it's going, thanks to my youngest). He only just checked the amount of tobacco in the pouch. He does that 3 or 4 times a day. He is good and when I stop altogether I can at least be around for him and his brothers for a bit longer. I don't know how long though. Tobacco should have been made illegal over a century ago. The industry and misgovernment knew. It was still denied when I took it up. We thought of it as being similar to having a little treat and if course it's only one or two in the evening at first. Like all addiction the "need" increases. The tobacco industry should have already been sued into oblivion and their executives imprisoned. If it had been illegal when I was young I wouldn't have touched it, and thank goodness I never used any other drugs (except occasionally prescriptions, and the last few years tramadol and co dydromol for pain from bone fractures causing arthritis over time. They only recently far up trying to push steroids on me. They are given incentives by big pharma to prescribe. Last year I mentioned chest pain to a GP (I went about something else) and she had 6 different pills delivered to me by the chemist. I read the inserts and the possible side effects were very bad, so I passed. Took them to a chemist for disposal. Refused "something else". Prescribed stuff for a dodgy heart before any tests. An echo cardiogram and an angiogram showed my heart is fine. I doubt it would be if I had swallowed those pills every day. I have been told that tobacco is more addictive than heroin. Not so quickly but after a while. Anyway, I am plodding on and keeping quite positive. Avoiding too much doom and gloom (I am sure those in control want to drive people to suicide as much as they can). For every distressing video or bit of news, William, indulge in two positive things. For every town you see degenerated, visit two pleasant areas even if its only parks or family and friends gardens with birds, and perhaps squirrels. Don't let the b uggers grind you down.
Lovely to see the local people and their kids engaging with todays celebration. I'm old now but I remember as a young lad going to stay with my cousins in Gravesend. Still one of my childhood memories along with visiting places like Fort Tilbury. Thank you William.
Great to see the schools involved. I worked in Gravesend for many years, and found the ethnic mix far less of a problem than many towns in the UK. The Sikhs arrived in numbers in the 50's/60's and generally encourage their kids/grandkids to be part of the community and not defensively seperate.

I have a smart phone but I have no SIM card in it, keeping it in airplane mode, just connection throigh wifi and have an old burner phone if someone wants to call me. So if I had to pay for a carpark with an app on my phone, I'd have to find a wifi connection somewhere. I might get a SIM but downloading all these apps is a pain and an app for every little thing is not convineient because they are all just another instance of the browser.

Gravesend has a huge Sikh community, the Gurdwara Temple is huge in Gravesend looks like the Taj Mahal. Theres also a statue of Squadron Leader Mahinder Singh Pujji in the town. The Sikhs are very intergrated and valued in the community.

I think when Diwali comes around we should have some Crusaders marching at the back, it looked weird to me, should be exclusively our day.
