My father completed his matriculation in 1939 from Ewing Christian, and he lived near Iqbal Gunj Chowk.

Neither the mother nor the sons may be alive nowadays but their unheard efforts are still an asset where children continue to study through decades without any consideration of creed, colour, or religion.

Before 1947, my Ludhiana had six major schools: Government High School, Arya High School, SDP High School, Khalsa High School, Christian High School, and Islamia High School for Girls, the one you are visiting today. Only Government , Chritian School and Islamia High Schools had spacious compounds at the center of the buildings. There was another smaller Islamia School near my home in NEEM WALA CHOWK. The location of this school tells the size of Muslim population in the surrounding area. Luckily, there was no blood shed in Ludhiana. On my street, in neem Wala Chowk, there were only three Hindu residents; the area was predominantly Muslim.
If you get chance, you may visit the Khalsa High School where the famous SAHIR LUDHIANVI studied. He used to live in Qreem Pure.
There were no electricity nor electric fans before 1947. The rich people used cloth swing fans that were pulled periodically by servants sitting at the entrance of rooms. We, the poor folks, used the open air or hand fans occasionally. Just imagine studying hard under such conditions. The smoke from a kerosine lamp was chokingly suffocating when you sit so close for studying. But we did compete with the rich in studies and beat most of them.
