I cry watching her videos, cause she really is THE BEST in the world. Not even 1 single soul touched me and cativated me like Surya watching Ice Skating!
Ummm if you watch RadioLab episode she did this backflip because she was in pain. At this point in time the judges actually loved her because she had an honorable reputation (3x World Silver Medalist!) And personally I don’t think she was underscored after 1991. Athletic or not, if you’re not a popular skater you’re getting underscored no matter what. She got 5.2 and 5.3 which I actually think is overscored.
Quelle femme, res-pect !

I really love her style of skating. She has a more rough approach and shows a lot of power in her skating. She’s not dainty, she’s STRONG and it’s beautiful to see her unique abilities.
The seasoning, the flavor, the spice, it's crazy to me she got so much hate, I'm not going to pretend not to know why but she is amazing. She is also one of the most graceful skaters I've seen even though the video that brought me here was of someone saying she wasn't as graceful as her fellow competitors.
I've seen this a million times, but today heard some background on Radiolab. Notice how she favors her left leg. She was in considerable pain from prior injuries. That's why her technique is fd up. There was a kind of jump she was supposed to do there and knew that she could not. Since legitimate jumps are supposed to be landed on one foot, she thought there might be just an off chance she could possibly get away with a backflip.
I thought the ISU told her that she had to land it on one foot for it to count because they thought she wouldn't be able to, then after she actually pulled it off they said "ohhh sorrryyy it's still illegal haha kthxbye"
I'm wondering if "a kind of jump" meant a planned Lutz? It was the only jump she seemed to omit. She couldn't afford another error after the drop on the Toe Loop/Salchow combo and the underrotated Flip. There was no way she could pull off a Lutz at that point, so... to me, yes: a backflip made sense. If you can't get the scores, get the crowd. What does it truly matter if you're 5th or 15th at that point?
I came here after seeing a short doc about her on Netflix, it's called "Losers" and she is featured in episode 4. If anyone wants to see it, I recommend it. The doc delves into her amateur career, her challenges as a Black girl in a sport mostly dominated by thin white girls. Overall, her biggest challenge was that she wasn't the typical skater, she defied all the norms (Black, ungraceful etc.) and that's why she wasn't well-liked by the judges. Although the doc is called Losers, it focuses on losers who eventually managed to find their salvation, and triumph beyond their loss. In her case, her freedom came when she started her professional career after her last Olympics (the one in this video). She finally felt free to do whatever she wanted, and she shone brighter as a professional skater.
The documentary is a pity party. She wasn't well liked by the judges for how many reasons. Her choreography was a mess (not totally her fault but still judged upon), her spins were slow and often traveled, her edge work was shallow, her combination jumps were a persistent struggle for her.... she was good at the backflip, and was far better than most at figure skating, but her skating, as it was compared to her competitors, was lackluster. Good, but not the best. She thinks she was called ungraceful because she was black, but she actually just was ungraceful. She didn't move smoothly across the ice. She embraced athleticism and brute strength in a sport that's ballet on ice-- you shouldn't look like you're putting effort into something. That's why Misty Copeland is so popular despite that she's more muscular than the conventional ballerina. Because despite her body and color she still moves like a ballerina should, as if she's exerting no effort at all.
Fun fact: Surya was injured during this performance and couldn’t even walk until the day of her performance at the olympics. This caused her to fall during her routine and to ultimately land her signature backflip on only one (healthy) foot.
Wow, I didn't know there could be a single moment in Olympic history that I'd love to be present for but seeing this, I think this is it. I don't know anything about figure skating but this is amazing!
When she fell at 1:05 she knew the chance for a medal was gone. So she decided that for her very last competition before going into show sports, she would do the rest of her program only for the viewers and herself. The did the backflip she had previously only shown in the shows after the actual competitions and she ended the program with her back to the judges facing the spectators instead. The backflip was officially banned because it was landed on two feet, but of course Surya demonstrated that to be otherwise. Overall, this was a massive eff you to the system that has treated her so badly all these years.
I remember her from early 90s, I must have been 7 or 8 years old. I was obsessed with her and all I wanted to do was to be a figure skater. But, alas, my small town in Russia did not have a figure skating school. She is truly a legend.

LOL, you can see the other camera crew scrambling to keep up with her after she ditches the planned program and starts going for that backflip.

Not artistic enough? I had shivers all over me from the beauty! (Also my heart racing for that special jump...)
.
From what beauty?Nothing beautiful in this program at all!
@Kathryn Foster-martin Exactly 😂😂😂
You clearly need to watch more figure skating videos if he think this was a beautiful program. Go watch Yuna Kim 2010 Olympic performance, Mao asada, Yulia lipnitskaya sochi 2014 team event performance, Evgenia Medvedeva, Alina zagitova. They all did true art.
They really mean not conventional enough...this was incredibly powerful..and artistic screw those judges
5:45 This is for your amazing performance...
5:50 And this is for the Backflip
I cry watching her videos, cause she really is THE BEST in the world. Not even 1 single soul touched me and cativated me like Surya watching Ice Skating!
3:57 : that moment where she said to the judges "I don't care about your f... marks, you won't have my soul !! Ever !!" Respect !!
There’s a podcast called Radiolab and they did an episode on this story recently
When spirit fingers win over backflips, u know it’s time to turn pro. Love u Surya, everyone remembered this moment as ‘that girl who did the backflip’ but very few remembered who won❤️
Risshi Shafra that’s so tru 💙
No, we all remember Tara Lipinski won gold becoming the youngest Olympic champion in many years.
@@laurielynne2006 It’s true, I only remembered Surya ‘’the lady who did the backflip’’ very vividly for the years after ‘98, still get that nostalgia watching her do backflips on ice on other videos even more so knowing now that she did this routine although not as flawless with a really bad injury.
One does not require medals to justify their legendary. Her work of art speaks boldly for itself. She lasted longer than most and most definitely remembered by most. We thank God for your Special gift to the world, there will never another Surya..🙏🏿🙏🏿🇭🇹
my jaw literally DROPPED. this was so iconic.
it was for her a way to say fuck to thoses referees who always undermarked her and to say goodbye to the crowd. she was a star
Almost 2m views for a non medalist. What a revenge, timeless performance that is still a reference today, even for non amateurs like me but I remember watching this live as a teenager. I don't remember anything else from the skating bit at those Olympics ! ❤
At least she went out with a bang
I was holding my breath waiting for her backflip. And it was worth it! Im sad I just discovered this beautiful, talented, amazing woman now this 2020. She deserves all the recognition👏🏻
I’m so in love of How she ends her program, Back to the judges and facing the crowd.
She was incredible why does hardly no one show her enough love and respect for this woman she has done this for years and still incredibly amazing at it, if I could do this I’d be so happy. She truly is the Ice queen 👸🥰💗
So powerful. She does not look like she about to break like the rest. It almost feels like they judged on their body type sometimes.
Oh they absolutely judged her body type. People to this day are stuck on this toxic mindset that figure skaters need to be skinny and ballerina-like, it’s the same with gymnastics, Simone Biles deals with the same crap.
I know we just watched her do an impossible backflip on the ice and land it beautifully, but, can I just say her costume is soooo beautiful!
Goosebumps. Goosebumps. Goosebumps. The beauty, the grace, the precision, the strength, the speed. She was the ULTIMATE athlete and the BEST figure skater.
she will never be a failure in my eyes. forever a legend.
That backflip... the best middle finger she could show to judges.
And how she ended her last spin, looking to the audience👌🏻
We love her so much❤
*Back* to the Judges

Surya Bonaly, c'était la meilleure ! 👍
Quelle Grâce et quelle athlète !! ❤
The backflip you’re looking for starts at 3:50
SLO-MO at 5:30
She did all this with an injury, she has the heart of an olympian.
Surya, NEVER stop skating. I pray your STYLE, TALENT, SKILL will NEVER end. Teach and train future figure skaters your QUALITIES. GOD IS WITH YOU ALL THE TIME.
🤲😇🤲⛸⛸🌷🥇
Despite the falls and the mistakes, she is a POWERFUL skater and I am just in awe at watching her skate. She is incredible.
She was a true Champion! Ahead of their time, her skills are ones to be strive for today!
Quel panache !
Beautiful.
Just Beautiful.
And she used my favorite piece by Vivaldi..
the queen
She's the most exciting skater I've ever seen! Unforgettable!
She had tore her achilles
@@snowangel7980Oh. You people just don't understand.
That Galaxy Artist and by you people you mean who, exactly?
What a beautiful skater!!! I’ve been watching women’s figure skating for over 30 years and she will always be one of the best!!! ❤

İzlediğim en yaratıcı skate şovlarından biriydi, ekrana kilitlendim
I can’t wait to see a biopic about her. Surya was definitely not like the regular figure skaters. She was one of a kind.
The way she seems to float around after doing the backflip made me cry, she looked really accomplished
Outstanding PERFORMER !!! The fire on THE ICE. Stupendous. THANK YOU SURYAAAAA
3:55 Is what you're here for
Steve Martino Thank you! 😂
Even if you’re not a figure skater or an athlete, you have to admit Surya is an athlete that everyone has to remember ❤
what i like about the (japanese?) commentators is that they only comment when neccessary and not talk throughout the program lol
FABULEUSE !!! ❤❤❤
Her performance makes me cry. She was one of the kind❤️so much beauty and passion in her performance❤️
Watching this video had my heart beating so fast.
26 years have passed, but I remember this figure skater! Bravo!👏
She’s an amazing black woman!!!
The way she bends into her arabesque kind of spins ahhhh that transition is SO BEAUTIFUL
I remember her from early 90s, I must have been 7 or 8 years old. I was obsessed with her and all I wanted to do was to be a figure skater. But, alas, my small town in Russia did not have a figure skating school. She is truly a legend.
So smooth, so strong. She was a phenomenon back then and such a pleasure to watch now.
Amazing!!!
Merci!
I got goosebumps whenever i watch bonaly sliced d ice..what an incredible dancer..❣️
she is the perfect personification of a PERFORMER , she has you on the edge of your seat the whole damn time, completely engrossed in what she’s doing, her energy is infectious and her passion and talent can be felt through every damn second.
