      I am very attracted to beards. Took me a while to really realize this a: because they need to be well maintained and b: because the common expectation is to like clean shaven men. After all that's how they sell all the men's razors in advertising^^

    --also worth noting that in a lot of the case with sexual dimorphism in birds, the female are often the ones that brood for the most part, so the gray/brownish colors also work as a camoflauge. 😊

    I learned from a Chinese creator that the gene for body odor and wet vs dry ear wax is the same. Many Chinese people have little body odor and dry ear wax. I wonder if beards are the same. It's attached to a gene that also effects something like skin tone or the ability to tan (create melanin). Native Americans, some tribes in Africa, some Asians, tend to have less body hair and less beard growth. just random thoughts off the top of my head. It helped your engagement in any case.

      lol when I started testosterone shots I was telling my uncle about it and said I was worried that I'd start smelling and need to use deodorant and he was like, "have you got dry ear wax?" "yeah?" "you're all good then. you've got the chinese low body odour gene"

    Henna is often used as hair dye, it can turn greys more reddy, so maybe its used to hide greys.
    Also ellie's comment about armpit and pubic hair, armpit hair is to catch the sweat and pheromones to attract the opposite sex, and pubic hair is somewhat similar but also stops germs getting into an area that has a delicate balance of bacteria (for females/afab). Hence shaving can cause more yeast infections or bacterial infections, especially if you are already prone to them and also wash that area with heavy soaps more.

  • @selewin
    @selewin Год назад

    Just listened of Spotify. And wanted to add my thoughts without sources. I thought I heard somewhere that armpit hair is there to prevent shaving. And a other hypothesis I thought for beardhair is hiding the outline of the jaw. You kinda have a fake outline of your face to aim for. And specifically the jaw as a weak spot.
    Great podcast BTW working my way down to listen to them all

    I'm not gonna lie, I saw the title and I saw the thumbnail and was still half expecting to be listening to a Social Science type episode about how beards work for gay folks because I feel like that's the exact prank that would be pulled on this podcast and I am here for it lmao

    my friend's used henna to make her hair more red (she's already mildly red headed naturally)

    If beards are defensive, would that imply people in Eastern Asia, Sub-saharan Africa, and the Americas didn't fight as much? Also, wouldn't it make more sense to develop fat around the chin or better jaw structure?

    • @munaq-jp
      @munaq-jp 3 года назад +2

      Actually, considering geographical distribution, wouldn't it make more sense that beard is related to Neanderthal ancestry?

    I saw the thumbnail and thought they grew beards for this episode! I personally do not find big beards attractive. I also think that big beards age a person quite a bit. A little facial hair here and there and gotees are fine.

    As a very hairy white person I find it quite confusing. Could it also be to protect from cold? Or is my blonde thinner hair not protecting as much or is it just random? And do you think testosterone makes your hair darker as well as thicker and why? WHY????

      Just got to the part about fighting. Wondering if people fought enough in order for this type of evolutionary change to occur. Would have to do more research but it’s an interesting theory.

    I assumed a beards main function was to protect from the elements much like other head hair. = / They do aften, in their untrimmed state, cover your throat which is a pretty vulnerable and essential area especially in colder climates. Beards could also probably protect from a striking or slicing blow to the throat, which is an easily incapacitating and/or lethal attack method.

    Maybe a thick beard protects against scratching or biting. We should not assume that prehistoric humans fought like gentlemen ;)

      I thought this too, like I wonder if there's any evidence that we originally didn't have beards and males evolved to have them, or if we all originally had them and females evolved to not have them anymore ya know?

    There is also dark Hannah- or how its spelled. My mother coloured her hair with Hannah dye and it was very dark, almost black. Hannah can have multiple different colours not only a redish brown. Very interesting episode. I didnt think talking about beards could be this interesting.

    I always assumed it was a defense against cuts. when we shave it is by cutting our skin to remove the hair particles from under the skin. plus for some reason it has been shown that people who shave more often tend to have more/thicker beards then those who do not. those who start shaving earlier in life grow beards at younger ages. most beard patterns are down and toward the person versus up and away which if one was to get in a fight with a bladed weapon the weapon would come in and down.

    • @saggguy7
      @saggguy7 3 года назад +2

      theres actually no evidence at all that people who shave have more/thicker hair. It’s just that as the hair grows out with a blunt tip it appears more noticeable and coarse. All shaving does is cut off the hair at the surface of the skin.
